I beleive that when it comes to medical sciences and searching for cures for illnesses then it should be done with as little pain as possible. However for psychological reasons, it should be a completely painless process. It's pointless to damage an animal just to see how it reacts to it's situation, but for medicine it should be as painless as possible.
