The communist in North Korea assumed the public would turn against Nixon before the election hence why those talks rarely got anywhere. Those were the best terms we were gonna get considering public resentment in the US.

The events I am referring to was during the 1972 election where the North Vietnamese went back on preliminary peace accord that took place that October in hopes of making it seem as if the Nixon administration was refusing to cooperate. Kissinger became ruthless in turn ultimately succeeding at getting the N. Vietnamese to come back to the peace talksa.
