  • So if this is a 4-string again what did you do about the extra machine heads. Did you take them out?

  • @JacqueRamon Yep. I took those out, took off the Wilkinson bridge, put the original Spector bridge back on, and put back in all the old black hardware/machine heads, and stained the body with a black wood stain.

  • @Spector2112 It's a shame the neck couldn't handle the extra tension. It sounded great. Did you fill the headstock holes?

  • ...wonder what Geddy Lee could do on this bass?

  • Damn that's cool. Awesome song too! Never heard of King's X before. Gonna investigate.

  • you should put the heavier string up, it's easier to play with the fingers...

  • Dude ...you rock man....great video...yea you messed some notes up.....no biggy man.....sounded and looks great. Totally awesome what you did to your Bass.

    Can't believe you did it.

    You da man

  • OMFG!!! i cant tell you how much Doug P., and 8-string bass and rocking have influenced my playing. this is a monster video!

  • This is awesome, guy!! Nice playing, btw!! Perfect mix on the video to show off the bass. Just enough KingsX. Killer bass sound!! You rock!! (I'm a guitarist, btw)

  • I once found that i desired a 5 stringed bass.

I But my ears have now fallen in love with this beauty!

  • @andnor You could get a 10 string bass if you can handle the neck tickness and are able to find one.:p

  • you are AWESOME! dude! great job!

  • Excellent!!!!

  • Great! I'd love to hear Pearl Jam's Jerremy on it.

  • @Charlie665bass Thanks man! Sorry, no Jeremy... this bass is back to a 4 string again. The truss rod just can't handle the added tension of the extra strings anymore!

  • A great job on one of my favorite King's X songs! Awesome!

  • nice chop job on the bass bro. damm good work sounds like his 8 string as well. awsome playing as well

  • If this is butchering, I want you to come and play with me! We'll have a meatfest!!

I just ordered a Dean Edge 8, waiting for it to arrive Thursday. I do not think it will sound that good though. I can only hope!!!

  • my god, huge sound! congrats!

  • very sweet, you don't happen to live near long island ny.cuz i need a bass player like you

  • fjhjkl;oiuythrdgfhjkitydfxcfg sorry just wiping the drool off my keyboard

  • Look at the video! Doug's using a 12 string Bass!

  • 100$ strings rofl

  • Great choice for a song to demostrate this bass! Very well played as well :)

  • Maybe the best bass sound I ever heard! Now, you keep it 8-stringed, you hear me? And let it be your main instrument. Doctors order! Don't argue. :-)

  • Hey man, really love what you've done with the bass, and loving the X cover as well, could you send the tabs?

  • awesome jam and love kings x...thanks for helping and for being an awesome player... really... please keep it up...god bless

  • I pulled the fretts from one of my basses, it sounds really good, I'm thinking of pulling a second on, No frett buzz with frettless, but you got to buy $50 flatwounds. Still worth it.

Let me know I can tell you how to pull them if you dont already know.

  • Yes! Awesome song, and you sound great.

  • awesome sound. Great playin.

  • You are a genius! You got to tell me how you did it!

  • i think i read your post on tb forum. was that you?

  • where did you get the stuff to convert it?

  • @BassDude50000 I used a Wilkenson bridge I already had, because those have two string anchors on each saddle, and filed a second groove in each one too, as well as a second set of grooves in a brass nut I'd made at work. Bought a set of 3/3 guitar tuners from a local store, drilled the holes in the head stock, routed a pocket for the bridge, and CRANKED the truss rod to deal with the tension. It's a total hack job, but it worked!

  • @Spector2112 wow, you made this 8 string yourself???

  • as people can see here(and maybe FEEL?), playing "only" bass instead of guitar, isn't boring at all ! good job!

  • sounds phattt man

  • Is that thing a bitch to play? He played a 12 string for a while I think.

Makes you appreciate his skills even more.

I've never tried an 8 string bass, but on a guitar one string is smaller than the other so you have to press down different. Something I would have to get used to.

  • @coronet67 It gets better with practice, but getting the octave strings to ring out consistently was never easy for me.

  • @Spector2112 hey spector, you want to sell it.

  • @dlechler1 dude, if you saw this thing in person, I'd be paying YOU for pain and suffering!

  • @dlechler1 Besides, it's not an 8-string anymore. I switched it back to a 4 a while ago.

  • @Spector2112 Pull the fretts off and go without. 8 string frettless would pump.

  • @dlechler1 FUnny you say that, because I've been thinking of yanking the frets.

  • Great bass! Great sound! Nice bathrobe!

  • Nothing like throwing on some comfy clothes and playing bass all day

  • Try an 8 string Rich Bich BASS!!! Long before these I imagine. The Bich originated in 1977

  • @MetallicBill I'd LOVE to have an 8-string Bich.

And for clarification, there are no "these" for this bass. This was the only Spector 8-string ever (as far as my research and contacting Spector was able to determine), and I converted it from a 4-string myself. It's back to a 4 now, and will stay that way.

  • @Spector2112 I know a chap who has two 8-string Bichs. He's got a fantastic collection, but they really stand out some.

Brilliant work on the conversion, even if it has gone back to a four. Seems a lot of people go back - mind if I ask why you did so?

  • @Spector2112 Well, those 8 string Biches are pretty damn cool, and they do pop up used from time to time!

  • Great cover and nice sound!

btw: I love the way this song makes you dance xD

  • Do you have or know anyone who has a full (and correct) bass tab for this song? I've been looking for one for years.

  • @Anonmius00 I don't have any, but I know I'm not playing it correctly, I just stormed my way through it a couple times before recording this. I guess the guitar tab would probably be a decent start for the chunky parts, the rest I[m unsure of.

  • what a great to start a new day with a 8 string bass. nice pj's. great bass.

  • sounds good,,,

  • D-U-D-E-:!-;4 strings are M.I.A.-just kidding!!Awesome job man;how you customised it!!Thumb'sUp!

  • Doesn't sound octavy enough, which can be a good thing. But good work :)

  • good god, that things sounds amazing! can you go through your signal path quickly?

  • @Warsel Hey man, thanks! Actually I made a video showing my basic signal path.... it's called "The Spector Method". I tried to attach it to this reply, but it won't let me.

Be sure to read the description for lots of detail.

  • @Spector2112 Thanks, I'm going to check it out!

  • great sound. I looked all over for a spector NS-2A but I didn't see one like yours (strings aside). The pickups don't look like stock. Have you done custom work on it besides the strings?

  • can you play it with your fingers? i'm interested in converting my spector too... nice sound btw

  • @livium90 sure, I have two Rush covers up here that I play with my fingers. Playing real fast with fingers doesn't work too well on an 8 or 12 though, just gets messy.

  • @Spector2112 That's what I discovered when I owned my Dean 10-string. Being primarily a fingerstyle player I didn't have the pickstyle chops for it, and frankly didn't want to spend the time/effort in pickstyle when it'd be more effective putting the same effort into my overall playing. Now I'm using an E-H MicroPOG, which is 95% of the sound (effects have truly improved in this as I've used them for "Virtual 10-strings" for 15 years) and can use any bass I want for only parts of songs.

  • @Spector2112 You could play DANCE ON STILTS by BOC, it sounds so similar to this. Oh, and anyone who uses guitar can play over a backing track like this for fun! haha

  • I wanna see ore videos pls

  • mad, i like you're thinking. easier with pick or fingers?

  • How and ware did you get a spector 8? !!!!! i want it :)

  • @10stringmaster

Made it (well, converted it), myself.

  • Great song, and excelent execution. Nice bass conversion. Congrats. Take a look at my 8'er , me playing Pearl jam's Jeremy

  • Dear sweet creamy Jeebus.... an 8-string Spector. Just add a low-B and a not-so-low-B and I' be hooked for good! :D

  • SHIT this is a wet dream of a Bass... And great playing as all ways...But you know that any way lol.. Take care brother

  • Thanks Low.. Nope, drop D (hehe actually drop Double -D!)

  • Kick ass bass...

  • That's Bad assed B. Need to use it in a Sludgefunk Reunion. hahaha

  • Sounds great. Very interesting tone. Must be hard to fret. I'm having a hard time with 4 strings, so I'm gonna pass on this idea.

In 5-6 weeks time, there will be no trace of a dispute anymore. You used "the sentence". hehehe.

  • Definitely takes more concentration, with both fretting and picking. There are times when I'm accidentally muting the octave strings, which defeats the purpose. I may do another quick partial vid of another song which would showcase the octave strings more.

  • dude, this video rocks! I can't believe that you disputed it and won! thats great. Once I tried to convince youtube and warner to un-block my video of time bomb, i never got a message back from warner and youtube just told me to look at the guidelines.

  • Still have to wait to see if I "won", or if it's just in line to be shot down later. Things have been weird lately. Some stuff is becoming safe, and then out of nowhere...BAM! What's really funny is that the backing track you hear is FROM YOUTUBE!! I played along with a video that was NOT on an official channel of any kind.

  • Holy! This is unreal! Good on you for derailing the block...hope it's not temporary. FAVED! :)

    All the best,

    Joy/the Leopard Lounge

    LRRG

  • Woah! Thanks!

  • Franken-Spector Lives!

  • Not forever, but for a little while...

  • Cool, you got them to release it. Awesome work.

  • thanks man.

  • I LOVE IT, BRO!

  • Now you know what's in store!!

  • awesome man! i see its working now! :D gj gnarly bass!

  • Congrats on your victory, albeit temporary, or not. Hellova job on this one! 5 stars, as usual.

  • fingers and toes crossed. but again, it really was only a test video...Hell, i only learned the song right before posting it! I considered doing Jeremy, but that's too long and too obvious. (harmonics sounded GREAT though!)

  • what a tone!!! thats awesome mate, superb ******

  • Thanks man. It sounds SO much better now with the SeymourDuncans than it did when I only had one old ass EMG in it the last time it was in this configuration.

  • That's one badass looking bass

  • thanks, just don't look at it up close....it's a crime scene!

  • Gotta love Kings X! Doug Pinnick rules. Awesome job on the bass.

  • thanks man. On listening to it again, I notice a lot of times when I'm not fretting the octave strings as hard as I needed to,, so they aren't heard as much as I'd like, but that's just sloppy playing.

  • I didnt notice that really. I thought it sounded great. Is it odd to play on an 8 string?

  • Big, big sound from that baby.

  • oh yeah. Who ever watches this should probably turn down the bass on their system if they can.
