Brian Johnson is awesome! I have Volume 1 and I thought it would take me months to get through them but I listen to them while running and at work--and at home, every chance I get, just can't seem to put them down. He truly "stands on the shoulders of giants" and provides such a wonderful summary of some of the best books ever written.
You are right on two counts: YT is not the place for real discussions and, secondly, I have not studied positive psych. However, whether or not pos psych can be demonstrated to work scientifically, I am fundamentally at odds with the notion that self delusion is good for you. I am particularly concerned about how these techniques are being used by corporations as a new form of human management designed to maintain corporate order no matter how terrible the conditions are for employees.
The fallacy of so-called positive psychology is that it assumes happiness should be the determining value of human life. I cannot understand why happiness should be valued more than, say, freedom, beauty, truth, justice-- things that can actually cost us happiness. In fact, unrealistically positive views of the self, exaggerated beliefs in personal control, and unrealistic positivity is a more insidious means of control than the traditional modes of violence and coercion.
@obscenegrace2003 All part of a longer chat better had over tea than YT comments. Check out Seligman's new book "Flourish" where he addresses some of your concerns. You might also enjoy Tal Ben-Shahar and Heidi Grant Halvorson. I get the sense you haven't actually studied positive psych in any depth as your criticisms sound more like criticisms of the general self-help movement than the emerging science of well-being.
Many thanks for sharing the VIA character strengths test site. Very intriguing stuff.
I must say, I am a bit discouraged by my results bc I now feel as though I should become a nun. Lol. (Appreciation of beauty and excellence, capacity to love and be loved, love of learning, gratitude and kindness).
However, I am certain that further thought & study into them will result in greater happiness.
@PhilosophersNotes Discouraged was not quite the accurate word there and you were right to question it. I have continued watching several of your vids and put some of my quad II type rituals back into place. In doing so, I have discovered better ways of utilizing my strengths and want to thank you for your ENCOURAGING literature and videos.
@PhilosophersNotes I am really impressed that you reply to all your comments. Thanks! I recently started watching PN last week - there are lot of great videos. Haha don't know where to start sometimes - but so far I'm just looking at topics that interest me. Would you recommend going from Episode 1-->100? I love the passion - it's contagious!
@focusbringschange You can get all 100 at PhilosophersNotes . com or send me an email and I'll hook you up with this Note! brian at philosophersnotes . com
1 curiosity 2 open mindedness 3 love of learning 4 bravery 5 persistence I think you are correct in saying if I use these strengths daily I will be happy and stay happy. I have been happy in spite of these challenging times. Thanks for the Philosophers Notes, you rock.
I'm interested in studying Health, Nutrition & Fitness with an emphasis on healthy/optimal living. Do you know of any good schools to recommend? Great notes
Your energy is very high, that's great. I picked up on your high enthusiasm the first time my brother told me about your notes. Keep up the great work from Kinda
My top are 1) curiosity 2) judgement 3) creativity 4) humor 5) love of learning. Pretty hardcore to take those long tests, then again it was indeed insightful.
believe it or not my top 5 are 1)Gratitude, 2) forgiveness and mercy,3)Curiosity, 4) critical thinking/open mindedness, and 5) the capacity to love and be loved.
I think I was robbed Brian, how can I use this stuff more often?
And I'm already grateful for you reading this lol.
@zenrunner5000 hehehe. Try to use those throughout your day! I like to reflect in my journal about how I can use mine: Creativity, Hope & Optimism, Wisdom, Courage, Kindness & Generosity, Energy & Enthusiasm. I try to do it in "big" ways thru my work and little ways throughout the day. for example, gratitude: keep a journal every day! forgiveness: actively train yourself to forgive peeps quickly--right when they annoy you. :) curiosity: study a little every day. learn something new! etc. :)
Happiness is overrated and circumstantial. Joy is where its at.

@obscenegrace2003 We share our distaste for "self delusion." Thankfully, that's not what positive psychology is about.
