Just so we're all clear the number 1.6 billion clearly (at least to me becoz I'm not retarded) refers to the estimated number of people Australia sustained over 60,000 years or thereabouts. If modern Australia maintained a population of around about 22, 000, 000 and kept an average life span of around 70-80 years we would have to last antother 5, 000 years to match that kind of longevity as a society. After finding food (not easy in Aus) and securing a sleeping place there were the rituals and story-telling that needed to be carried out. They didn't invent the wheel because they didn't need or want to.

@mablob - Don't quote me, I can't name where I got my information, it's just suff I learned. At most, Australia had about 70,000 Aboriginies, living in small communities of extended families. There is no way that Australia could sustain 1.6 billion people, then or now. All the communities were specialised to their specific environmental requirements. They lived with the environment and changed to fit it, that doesn't mean that life was idyllic, easy or blissful. It was/is hard.

Europeans had thousands of years to sort out issues like diseases and alcohol, like you said, by suirvival of the fittest. Expose any indigenous society to these and of course the sh*t will hit the fan.

If any isolated group of people come in to contact with 'civilized' people, a bug or flu that we would fight off with a few days in bed would wipe out their society. It happened to the Aboriginals. Smallpox nearly wiped them out. Their age expectancy is way lower than the rest of Australia, the Govt just throws money at well meaning but useless organisations and the resources never get to those who need it.

the averyage lifespan was 35 back then as where whites was 65 its not in there genetics to live as long as us. infact the genetics are so different that aborigines are built for toughness broader bones and thicker skull but a smaller brain on average as where whites have a leaner bone structure and a thinner skull and therefore a bigger brain. whites can never take the punishment that blacks can take but whites in return will always live much longer and be smarter on average.

Lightning strikes caused the same devestating bushfires they do today and as were noted by the British.
