Recently started listening to his music (through L4D and Portal), and this one has got to be the most captivating and moving song I've heard from him so far (still trying to catch up on his songs - brilliant act of procrastination, I must say).
Nice to see/hear a more serious side of his music.
Jonathan Coulton could write anything but he gets his inspiration from sci-fi and musicians who don't take themselves seriously. Its just the way he enjoys to make music.
Yes, he does have great potential to be a somber, serrious artist.. but we love him more as the comedic one he is.. it's just the kind of person he is.
I agree that it's not exactly "funny," nor is it just about squid. It's more a satirical song... or maybe simply "witty." It can be humorous and clever without being funny. But though I find it beautiful, it's less genuinely sad and sweet to me than his other aquatic sea-creature ballad, "Seahorse."
@worldoflagcraft disagree. I think that he IS a somber, serious artist, it's just that his messages are mixed with comedy. And honestly, I love it. Code monkey. It's about the mundane repetition of work and how it grates on one's psyche, but it's funny. I crush Everything, it's about being misunderstood and misunderstanding yourself, and self loathing. It's mostly a musing and not a message. But it's a little funny. Shop vac is about suburban fever, and not getting what you expected.
@Numinous123 I totally agree, but when you think about it, if he TRIED to be a "better" musician, I don't think he'd be as good as he really is! He's the nerdy, bearded, comedic songwriter that we all know and love, if he were to suddenly become a "professional," signed, serious musician, I'm not sure if people would love him the way they do now.

The odd thing is, you can tell that he doesn't just have to write 'funny' songs. You can tell he has the skills to do a lot more.
Still, it's good that he writes comedic tunes. It's better than not having him make music at all.

I think he rights songs about things that aren't as signifigent at first glance. But if you look deeper you see the meaning. =]

That's why I don't think the song is funny. It's sad. Beautiful, but sad.
Also sad is the people who giggle at the squid song but miss the deeper meaning. That's like thinking "I'm your moon" is a song about astronomy.
