It was great how you avoided that red shell at the end. Could anyone tell me if there is a specific method of gaining a boost (When blue streaks appear around your character then you speed up) or is it more random?

You need to be in the slip-stream of the character in front of you. The bigger they are they better, stay close behind them and the boost will build up then...

Yes, this is a highly controversial new feature of mario kart which nearly saw the game not being released! Nintendo were too stubborn to change the code, and apparently not everyone found it hilarious when Mario gave Peach a golden shower! In the end they changed it to a golden mushroom (yeah I know)I have a cheat to unlock the golden shower power-up. But its a secret.
