  • If you like this you must see Kate performing with Dervish, heart warming.

  • Paddy Tunney, the source of this Song does a beautiful version in the Northern Ireland Singing Style.

  • the barnsley nightingale,,,,,,,beautiful

  • Sorry, bare with me, I meant to include Kate's version earlier.

  • I have heard the Planxty version most of my life, and I love this version, its beautiful!!

  • I love to hear Kate sing this.

It sounds very similar to 'The Streets of Derry' sung by Cara Dillon (another wonderful folk singer)

  • meloncolly breath and soulful tune. Share your wisdom through song and keep folk alive in your sweet muse. Our Kate, our Kate of England. x

  • love kate singing this song, but know one will beat andy irvine, who is just class.

  • @mickeyzat

    no one

  • Kate Rusby recorded this song. In the cover sleeve it says

"a very well known Irish ballad from Napoleonic times. it tells the sad story of lovers separated by a governmental decree that single men, for monetary reward, shuld marry the wives of landed lords away at war so that the land would still be worked."

  • Rogthedodger....this song is Irish me lad! you have been misinformed me thinks!!!

kate....your a gem...thank you for covering this beautiful song xx

  • its an english song

  • Nah sorry love, you're wrong

  • It's hard to come after the magic Planxty's version, but it is a very nice version of this song. I love it.

    Godd job Kate.

  • I've given you five stars because you really deserved it! - Choice of song ***** and singing ****** and musical accompaniment *******. I'd have given 7 if I had the choice. Keep up the good work!!!!!!

  • Very lusty, rich voice.

  • I think batterseaspark was talking about a female singer rather than a male. That kind of 'crossing over' - not Scotland/Ireland. I may be wrong but that's how it sounded to me.

  • @Georgia275 .......You are a smart girl....thats exactly what i meant....thank you!

  • Ah Kate. That beautiful voice is like dark sherry aged in cosmic oak.

  • i am sorry rusby 08 this is a tender of tenderest male mistake song it does not cross over well. any version of this song has no chance if the listener has heard planxty.i understand why you wanted to cover it, you obviously love it.

  • Que?

Is English a second language for you?

You know Kate Rusby is professional artist, 'Rusby08' isn't the singer.

'Cross over'?? what do you mean?

You are aware this is a Scots song not Irish are you?

I think you're getting very confused here

  • eh. leave him alone. he sounds sincere.

  • Nope, he sounds like a fool with an opinion and a keyboard

  • that was a really good comeback.

  • Strange that you're so quick to leap to the defence of someone so ignorant - one Planxty album and he thinks all folk music is oirish!!

Oh sorry sincerity is what counts eh? never mind boring old facts

Strange how you and batterseapark aren't on here at the same time.

  • that wasn't sarcasm. i admit when i've been bested. :] it was indeed witty and with today's society of fail-ish comebacks, that stood out to me as a good one.

and Scots have beautiful folk music.

i'm sorry if my pacifist-ness bothered you.

  • oh, and i'm not bitterspeak or whatever. i'm pretty sure he's a man and i'm a 17 year old black/scot girl. eh.

  • Apologies. I was a little testy.

It just REALLY annoys me when people claim expertise and know nothing beyond the Irish tradition, the English (and Scots) traditions are at least as strong and long but 'some people' seem to think the 'celtic' (ie Irish by another name) is the fount of all traditional music.

Anyone who's never heard of Kate is clearly ignorant - he probably thinks 'Dirty Old Town' is about Dublin.

Anyway 'peace' and thanks for the banter

  • It's quite delightful to see arguments settled so peaceably and friendly-like on youtube =] well, with apologies on either side.

Much better than descending into swearing and 'yer mum' jokes, and much more fitting for the comment section to such a beautiful song by an excellent singer =]

  • @singergraia yer ma

  • thats just coz irish are better

  • Beautiful. I've alway loved this song and this just gives me a reason to love it even more.

  • Lovely.

A true traditional classic song. I have long loved the Planxty versions of this.

It is good to hear a women singing this, especially one as talented as Kate. A cracking tyke take.

    Fair play to you Kate!

  • Lovely song. Thanks for posting.

    Best Wishes
