i would think they would impose such a checkpoint mainly to focus on light and heavy loads instead of small and passenger cargo. in a way to block illegal or cargo out of code going to the actual border checkpoint to reduce traffic and avoid bottlenecks in the actual border checkpoint. Not fully aware but from a logical pov it seems somewhat right.

It's more effective to have the checkpoints a short distance from the actual border. If they were to only take place on the border, they would be easier to avoid. They would be more predictable and once you've passed them, you'd be free to go where you want.

The reason they exist at all is that the traffickers were getting across the open desert, than going to the highway about 30 miles in, so now they set up these checkpoints to catch them once they hit the highways, they will be caught going off road on private property if they try to go around them at that point. The courts have ruled them legal as long as they are in the same places and marked.

I was arrested at one of these points, I thought the guy waved me through, he arrested me and as I was on vacation from Canada and my passport was not in the car I was arrested, my car was impounded and I spent the rest of my two week vacation getting myself out of my hole.

This is very alarming to see a check point so far inside the border and the question everyone gets asked is if they're an American Citizen? I went through one of these in northern Vermont near the Canadian border. It was weird and I wasn't sure what was happening then. They wanted to know where I was going?
At a DUI checkpoint last year, I pulled up and the officer asked me if I had anything to drink, and I told him, yes--a lot! Before I could finish the joke he sent me to secondary where they asked me how much I had to drink? I said two diet Cokes, a bottled water, and a large coffee. He told me that "you know we mean alcohol when we ask that." I said you're not supposed to lie to the police, I DID have something to drink. He just said get out of here and don't do that again.
The problem I have is with the questioning... i.e. Where are you coming from? Where are you going? They always get pissed when I say California... California or South I-15... North I-15... I had one ask, "What's your business?" I said, "personal travel." He said, "What's your reason for travel?" I asked, "Do I need one?" He said, "Maybe you like us to search your car?" The reason they exist at all is that the traffickers were getting across the open desert, than going to the highway about 30 miles in, so now they set up these checkpoints to catch them once they hit the highways, they will be caught going off road on private property if they try to go around them at that point. The courts have ruled them legal as long as they are in the same places and marked.

This is very alarming to see a check point so far inside the border and the question everyone gets asked is if they're an American Citizen? I went through one of these in northern Vermont near the Canadian border. It was weird and I wasn't sure what was happening then. They wanted to know where I was going?

At a DUI checkpoint last year, I pulled up and the officer asked me if I had anything to drink, and I told him, yes--a lot! Before I could finish the joke he sent me to secondary where they asked me how much I had to drink? I said two diet Cokes, a bottled water, and a large coffee. He told me that "you know we mean alcohol when we ask that." I said you're not supposed to lie to the police, I DID have something to drink. He just said get out of here and don't do that again.
