People often wonder why Bush rangers such as Kelly, Gardiner, and Hall had so much notoriety and sympathy.

My family came to Aus as convicts and as the story has been passed on to me through them, sympathy for the highwaymen was more a protest against tyrannical rule and upper class corruption than it was a love for crime.

Interesting - apparently my Grandmothers older sister was a close friend of Kate Kelly and used to take food on the boys, not sure of the details as most are passed on.
