I have recently picked up pipe tobacco and have a few questions... First of all, Every bowl I load will go out if sitting idly. How can I fix this??? Also, My pipe makes a horrible crackling sound when puffed and is just a pain to keep lit. any suggestions?

@RunninUpOnYa you have to develop your own rythm for smoking a pipe. smoke too fast and it will get too hot and give you tongue bite, smoke too slow and it will go out. its all about finding a good pace for the tobacco you are using. some tobaccos stay lit better than others. its not uncommon to have to relight a pipe so dont feel bad if it goes out. also get a pipe tamper, that will help you keep it lit properly.

@RunninUpOnYa General tips would be fill the pipe and then do a draw test. Make sure it isn't harder to draw than liquid through a regular soda straw. Make sure you do a false light, tamping after and relight fully. Then tamp as you smoke trying to keep a soda straw like resistance in the pipe. Check out my videos on packing a pipe and care.

after trying numerous different methods of packing a pipe, i gave this guy's method a try and, go figure, it works better than any other "expert" methods i wasted my time with. also of note: i seldom get tongue bite anymore.

for anyone who might be curious: it works because the general idea is to have the tobacco loose at the bottom of the bowl and tight at the top. the method shown here is the easiest way i've found to accomplish this.

@dasgroot Listen, the "method" you learned for packing is for pipe novices. It's a method that you learn so that you won't pack it too loose or too tight. This man has been smoking pipe since before you were BORN. He knows how to pack that thing, and he doesn't need that newbie method. You get it? He's an expert. Show him respect.

actually, there are many studies that show quite the contrary. Especially if u smoke it from joints. Anytime u burn something and put it into your lungs you do run the risk of getting cancer, if you smoked less weed perhaps u'd been able to pay attention in biology

Dude, I've just started to smoke pipe (smoked cigarillos before) and he's not packing it very good. From what I've learned; First, pack it very loose. Then pack it pretty hard, and then pack it hard.

Like you other people say; Is he stressed or something??You shouldn't stress when you're about to smoke. Maybe he was just busy? I guess he demonstrate that pretty much.

However, do the got a official site on the internet or something? I have some questions...

Actually if it stays lit and burns well, then he is packing it well, which I am assuming since he pakcs his pipe that way. That three step method that you described is for people who begin pipe smoking, but you'll learn over time that its not the best....by a longshot. There is no uniform way of packing your pipe but if it works for him then it works, but dont recommend and very amateur way of packing your pipe as means of a superior way when its not.

yes your just sipping the smoke. smaller puffs yield the best taste imo. plus you dont want the pipe to get burning hot , there are other factors involved but people tend to learn what works for them i guess

@hardrockerdave94 Yes, absolutely. The average pipe, packed decently, can last about 45 minutes. If you smoke it faster, and burn it hotter (not recommended at all), then it should last 20-30 minutes at least. It's great pleasure.

Buf if you fill the pipe TO TIGHT you'll have problem to to smoke it. Too loose, well, it won't work soo good since you have to lit it agian

Eh, I bought a few different styles of cheap corncobs pipes at first then eventually bought a $36 tobacco store pipe now I'm saving up because the actual cigar and pipe stores are a tad more pricey. I'm not runnin out and buying an expensive pipe right now, Not until i learn how to properly season the thing.
