Hey Tessa. If you wanna actually hit the target, and not yourself with the string, Try holding it a bit lower, and stretching your elbow a bit out. Don't look at the target, look down the arrow to the target. Like you would with a gunsights. I popped myself once with the bowstring back in P.E. I, too, am terrible at sports. I would stand there staring listlessly at where the action of the sport was going on thinking about whatever anime had my attention at the time and completely miss my chance to help my time. This is the reason I chose the easier option of walking the track during PE most of the time.
