This much underestimated Welsh folk singer was only 19 when she recorded this fine cover of the one of the most poignant of all the Beatles songs. Her singles, "Those Were the Days" and "Temma Harbour" were hugely popular and many thought her performance of “Knock, Knock Who's There?" in 1970 Eurovision Song Contest was unlucky to be shaded into second. She married the American record producer Tony Visconti and withdrew to raise a family, and by the time she returned her moment was gone.
As much as I loved Mary and like this version I think those who say she "improved it" are in fantasy land. This version is pleasant, but misses the whole point of the song by slowing it down to a pedestrian pace.
@gwhen100 Wow... that's a mouthful in a few words. You're entitled to your opinion, but you could have worded it "I think Mary sings this song better than The Beatles did". That way it comes off much less acerbic and critical. I like Mary Hopkin very much, and this is a nice rendition. She put her stamp on it, made it her own... although I prefer the Fabs' version. After all, it's their song, and naturally more personal to them. Lennon in particular.
I am "old" (61) and have read just about everything ever written about the Beatles. No one has ever reported that Paul slept with Mary Hopkins. Paul was, surprisingly, a one woman guy with all his girlfriends beginning with Jane Asher. Lennon was the dog of the group.
@changeofaddress1 You don't get it do you? She was a good singer and has meaning to some people, her, and her music. It has nothing to do with Paul. The song was a huge hit. You're a pathetic rude troll. Nothing more.
shes prettier than pauls wiives. in every case.. shes prettier than ringos wives- prettier than johns wives... not prettier than patty harrison. but shes a keeper.
How lucky we are! In sixties, we were happy and didn't know, so much glad today, because I'm sixty years old; Have listened and lived among special human beens, in a memorable era, I"ve been waiting, but now I think that it could never happens again... Congratulations to all mankind (We've came in Peace for...1969)
@FonsecaWilliam Thank you for your thoughtful, reflective comment, "we were happy and didn't know [it] . . . Have listened and lived among special human beings, in a memorable era . . . ." Very true. I'm not sure why, but it brought a tear to my eye.
The women you all mention are beautiful in their own ways,Dental work? Look at Jewel! Quit trying to fix everyone! Subtle little flaws are what make us who we are! This woman of the angelic voice is still to this day a true knockout! Check out her website! Cool too that she's still recording! And that she'd covered quite a few of Jim Croce's songs. This one's one of her best in my opinion..Just Sayin..

I really enjoyed watching and listening to the video but when I read some of the comments I can't imagine where their inspiration lay. Mary is who she is and it's her music. no one is forcing anyone else to listen. I listen because it pleases me, thanks Richpat
@coyotesong Oh I don't think so , all she needed was a little dental work done but after all she is british! as for yankee take ,wait now friend you gave the world horse faced uglies like sarah jessica parker , so you can't talk!
@jsilence418 Do we have to claim her??!! Ugh!! How bout Jennifer Aniston?? She's adorable. And there are some great Brit beauties too like Emma Watson! And love Alizee from across the Channel.
@goodolarchie Hi, just been to your channel to look at your guitar playing on your video uploads and there are'nt any! I feel really strongly about unwarranted criticism which borders on rudeness. Ms Hopkin can/does play the guitar very well. Please feel free to post your guitar skills and allow us all to give our opinion.
@richpat Oh relax! Do you get this angry every time somebody posts something contrary to your opinion on the internet? I'm not running out to buy a digital camera just so you can rub snot on it.
@goodolarchie i'm not angry, actually I am feeling extremely calm and relaxed, you posted what I believed to be an unfair criticism, and I responded to it. Your reply on the other hand has an extreme feeling of anger in it, If you dont want feed back then don't post?
Very Beautiful. Charming. Wonderful. A golden moment in time that cannot be duplicated today. Thank you for sharing.

Outstanding. Everything Mary Hopkin touched she improved. An excellent cover of the Beatles classic. And Mary never looked more beautiful.
