I felt so much better and i love my bald head. This and video by india are the only two songs i burned to a cd and play in my car.

  • @kittyprettykey141516

Awww, Its great when a song can inspire you. Hope your enjoying nappturality now. Its hard when you cut all your hair of but definatly worth it when your hair starts growing healthy without all the damaging chemicals :)

  • she's fantastic, we need more like her ^_^

  • i love this(:

  • Awesome! Would have loved to be there!

  • The guitar player is Bill Mueller. He played in the Detroit, Michigan area for many years. I recall tthe days he was in a band called Julie and did a solo act at the Holiday Inn in Taylor, MI. He was a phenomenon then and he is now united with the extrodinary talent of India Aire. What an awesome duo!

  • beautiful woman

  • I agree!

  • Beautiful SOng

  • It so refreshing to see someone back up there beliefs!!! Im loving her courage and her beauty not just on the outside. internally india is one of the most realest singer out there today!!!

  • I love the verse that is a 'shout out' to Melissa Etheridge 2:23 - 2:45 When she had her Breast Cancer and going on stage to do a tribute to Janis Joplin. She said that, 'at that time on stage she felt so alive' doing that bald headed. She warned them in advance she wouldn't wear a wig. Do makeup or adjust the lighting, cus she wasn't covering her head up. She hoped it would empower other women to feel better in their skin too. Obviously, India was moved by that too! I was.

    Peace,

    SpeakTruer

  • We love it! So empowering....

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • this song beautiful it is so true.

  • This song makes me cry... my mom had breast cancer last year.. chemo made all of her hair fall out.. so i had her to listen to this song.. i have never seen my mother be SO touched by a single song..

  • lovely when songs can be a tool to empower people into seeing to positive side to life and living.

  • YUp....I am not my hair!!! thats sooo true LUV IT

  • That is beautiful and amazingly moving... what an artist.

  • ALL BLK WOMEN GO NATURAL !! ;)))

  • I agree with you 200%

  • pertty song for a pretty lady

  • me too gurl i got dreads and i love em im still having to go thru yo dreads stank and stuff but fuck them im keepin em and embracing them as i go on in life

  • I've had my dreadlocks since i was three years old and although coming from a west indian country people used to still be like "why did ur parents have to put that thing in ur hair and i will never do that to my child etc..... And that in itself did grow with me hence the reason i used to cry and feel less attractive and stuff...... But after this song i did some soul serching and I am 21 now and actually really love my hair and don't care. Tryna protect my sisters from going through that now.

  • Baby be who you are. I have been wearing my hair alsomst bald for over ten years and I have had people call me "sir" trying to be funny and other things but you know what? I love me and I "choose" to be who I want to be. When it comes to people, some are ignorant in a good way and some in a bad, either way, hold your head high. By the way, I LOVE LOCKS!!

  • i heard your story tasherc. im sorry you had to go through that. but im glad you found yourself to love! go girl! big up da dreads!

  • i know a lady who did that to her daughter, most st.lucians hate that she locked her child's hair. I think that the lady did a powerful thing because she went against the current of " putting relaxer in her child's hair" and that was so awesome. I hope this enables the child to love herself just how god made her and that she learns that she is IS NOT HER HAIR. so TASHERC ur not the only one. so ROCK UR HAIR GYAL!!!!!!!!! one love

  • beautiful

  • alguem tem mais p e enviar por favor.....?

  • the crowd looks dead...but she rocked it

  • this song really inspired me.... still is and always will.... she said everything that i always wanted to say....

  • yOU ARE MY INSPIRATION : )

  • It is my favorite song! :D I love that she looks like a butterfly :P

  • OMG!!! WHAT is the title of her HUUUGE summer 2001 hit? I can barely hum the melody and don't remember too many lyrics.

  • Video..I'm not the average girl from your video my worth aint determined by the price of my clothes no matter what I'm wearing I will always be the India Arie!

  • i was never able to explain how liberating it was to shave my head... people would ask why...I wish I could have just played this song to them then.

  • I love this woman....!!

  • I love the way her wings look like they're beating. :)

  • She Writes Beautiful Lyrics B'.

  • this is a really good song

  • Wow...amazing.

  • Awesome!

  • very good!!!!

  • I love this song. Thanks to this song I finally decided after 8 years of dreadlocks to get rid of them. Dont get me wrong, I loved my dreads but as India says, Im not my hair :] Which is so true, my dreadlocks didnt define me and Im proud that I had the guts to in the end considering how everyone in town knows me as "the girl with the dreads". But Im more than that lol, thanks alot India :D

  • I decided to go natural about 2 years ago and just 2 weeks ago I started to grow locs. I love this song because people think that we are suppose to have extensions down our backs to conform to society. My hair doesn't define who I am. I love this song. People look at me differently but I love the stares. More power to INDIA and this song.

  • more power to you! not that you need it. :)

  • she admitted that Melissa Etheridge's performance celebrating Janis Joplin life at the awards, inspired her last 2 verses of this song.

  • she is such a true person. she is a real women and a beautiful soul. I love her

  • SHE'S ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTiFUL WOMEN ON THIS EARTH. SHE'S BEAUTiFUL PHYSICALLY AND HER TALENT, SOUL AND MiND MAKE HER BEAUTIFUL ALSO.

  • omg, what a talent. what a woman. And to those who forget, human is a single race. Comes in many beutyful colors and shapes, thank God :)

  • what a secure woman. great role model for young girls

  • i agree. Also she is so representative of the free spirit.

  • this is so real, this is a song a lot of black girls NEED to listen to. Our sisters dont understand, they are brainwashed to think that good hair is white hair, they need to stop listening to beyonce and listen to india arie

  • True, true

  • Ain't that the truth but when these black men reinforce these same ideals that in order for them to talk to us our skin has to be light, hair long, etc., it's no wonder that our people are still struggling with our image and who we are as people. It's so sad that Beyonce gets played all day long on black radio but no India Arie but she still rocks. GREAT ARTIST AND CONTINUED SUCCESS TO HER!!!!!!

  • IAMSHAK,

That goes for all girls of all colors, plus being skinny isn't the only way to be either. Pleeeez, those peep look ill they are so boney in person. That isn't real either. Every1 has their own beauty. You don't need certain hair and you don't have to be a stick.

    SpeakTruer

  • "boney in person" thats just putiing skinny people down which is just as not cool. Everyone is full in person and we all have our own beauty.

  • so ur trying to say that i am fake becasue god made me skinny?? babe , in order to rase self esteem u dont have to put others people down. both skinny, and curvacious women are dang beautiful. There are people who are just naturally skinny. me being from the caribbean , i got picked on for being skinny and tried to eat so i can gain weight but i never did. i learned to love myself

  • ..( and didnot put down more cuvacious girls because the people loved them more than me, i learned to appreciate my beauty the same way i appreciate and admire theirs)

so WE ALL ARE BEAUTIFUL. people, we need to realise that there are different types of beauty :- white/black/asian/latino/skinny/voluptuou-s/natural hair or relaxed.

  • kikiCARIBBEANGirl,

Hun, when I said the skinny peep... I was if in context, saying those that try 2 b skinny cus they think that is what is beautiful. Have u seen some of the models that r so thin they r just skin hanging on bones? They did that intentionally. I had my best friend lose her sister 2 anorexia. She was discovered 3 days after her death by her parents in a bath tub. That was an illness, intentional cus she was afraid 2 just love who she was. Girl, "I am not my hair" but I love it!

  • diz is my song rite here knoe it by heart cant wait to see her back really cant

  • im tired of feeling like a sell out for wearing my hair straight. i am not my hair :)

  • Who knows the exact date of when she shaved it off? im doing a report on her and want to be sure... she is so right... i AM the soul that lives within.

  • Love dis video! Most of All I love India Irie and her songs..Very Natural and Pure!Phenomenon Woman!

  • thas cool..good job

ive always wanted to shave ma head or get dreadlocks or somethin but im too chicken..if i do end up doin it itll be cuz of this song

  • just be natural don't worry about other people... they're just pulling you down into their evil ways .

  • ya i know thay tryed puting me down wen i shaved my hair but no thay coldent

i am wht i am. wht i woldent have friend if i shaved my hair ????????? hell no i woldent have fack friends am i right ?

  • I know girl! i cut my hair and the hater try to talk about me but my friend loved it and i know i look beautiful and real and that's all i need.

  • wow u can say ppl who do this are 10% thats it .my friends were my haters and my haters told me i dared but i was cool can u beleave it i did it agane be4 5 monthe after it grew .hehe its freacken cool shit

  • One thing that I Love about this song is that a point that India is trying to get across to me is that you must love yourself for who you are inside and out, we as a society have become very superficial...

  • LOVE HER SONGZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!

    deeaamnn work it gurlllll .....

  • beautiful

  • my gurl, my woman, my everything!!!!!

  • I'm screaming it!!! :-D

  • You got a good view of her!

  • I like the song...Its speaks volume

  • i dont like the remix i love her live

  • love your song

  • Same as me kedija, even though I wear a hijab people still like me because of me. My grandmother had breast cancer and lost all of her hair but now she looks even more beautiful. India Arie songs are awesome because she sings them from her heart.

  • India Arie is like me i wear a hijab b/c im not my hair!

  • I love India Arie!! Shes not one of those singers that wears all dat jewerly, so people will look at her and not the jewerly she wears.

  • She is a gret person, and an inspiration, whether you are male or female. I wish the females who "society" says look good, would act like India Arie!

  • I just loovee this girl!!

  • I finally cut it all off to go natural!!! And when i did I played this song over and over...THANK YOU INDIA for your inspiration!!!!

  • I just did the same

    I growing dreads now

  • Get yourself straight - shes called India because she was due on the birthday of Gandhi.

So what if shes black, there's black people living in India and there's Indian people living in predominantly black countries ... India is just her name get over it

  • THATS HER REAL NAME YOU IDIOT

  • love u girl u are such a insration to im i love uuuuu thanks so much u incourged me to go natral

  • india is trully one of our greatest songwriters of all time.

  • She's the coolest chick ever for her songs.

    I love her attitude. :)

More women would do well to pay attention to her words. :)

  • wow i totally agree with u lol it was worthit puttin your comment on :P someone in my school (a popular girl :S) recently likes her and im just suprised.

  • I love her voice and this is a nice song even tho I wear extensions sometimes...lol I like her wings lol

  • Amen to that nine110!

  • For music lovers, we know that India Arie tells stories. We relate to the messages from her music, whether it's Love, Pride, Redemption, Respect, etc.., India thanks for being beautiful and proud. Devoted to ya no matter what baby girl.

  • I am about to go natural and cut my hair as short as India's for my growing process....even tho its going to be a hard process with the pressures of society and all...This song will def. help me get thru it..Thanks so much India...

  • Good luck!! if you don't already know about it theres a site called motown girl which is great for natural hair

  • I love India Arie! But why isn't she playing her own guitar?

  • Oh, because that isn't her!

  • this is one of my favorite songs.:)

  • i ♥ this song. she is so beautiful

  • My god... She's so good !! Huge talent, she brings beauty in this world... definitly love it. RESPECT MS India Arie.

  • this song is pretty...its so true tho...i absolutely love this song

  • this song is simply beautiful!

  • This song actually brought tears to eyes. Love it!

  • Bringing it back to basics and keeping it real

  • India is a positive women. What a wonderful self image she exhibits. She is a fabulous role model to our black women. India's songs speak the truth.

  • I Have Been Told This, The Song Is Not About Hair, Even Though It Kind Of Is, It Is About A Woman, (Which Is Her), Getting Breast Cancer, And Worrying About Her Hair, So What She Is Sayin, Is That People Would Just Say That She Is Bald, But Itz That She Has Breast Cancer.

I Think That Is The Whole Meaning To The Song.

It Iz Such A Touching Song!

    xxxx

  • Here first album was great second could pass but the thrid!!! why is all her power fading away, again the work of some crazy producers imagination. Please India Arie get back your "John Lee Hooker" like power and stop singing pathetic lyrics!!!

  • y r pple so judgemental?

  • her vocal runs are amazing! >_< i love her voice so much :D one of the people i most look up to and try and follow after in my own singing =)

  • love herrr

  • That's damn right! I ain't my hair! I didn't get my hair in degree so what do my job skills have to do with my hair? I remember the racist police agency fired a black cop just for wearing dreads cuz it is against their "policy" to look professional. AH please! Dreads are beautiful. They are just hating that they cannot grow dreads. It is just another tool to put a black person down. By the way there's no such thing as nappy hair, it is beautiful kinky hair!

  • why COULDNT they grow dreads of their own? Plenty of people from all over the world, including europeans and americans, have dreads and they're just as beautiful.

it might easily have still been a racist act, using it as an excuse to fire the black cop, but i've known white people with dreads who have been fired for their hair too.

  • So cool i was in the dentist chair facing UNion Square when she performed this. So inspirational. Much love to you beautiful black goddess.

This is why music was created. To share, entertain, and uplift the spirit. THANK YOU INDIA!

    Listen.

    RESPECT.

  • this song is off the chain

  • beautiful : )

  • oooh so real..Who cares what anyone else says or thinks of you. We are so much more than anyones expectations or thoughts. Its what's inside of us all that counts. Sing that song girl!!

  • dumb ass.

  • beautiful!!

  • I love this song!!! India and Erykah... I love them so much

  • brilliant song...wats her album bowschick 87? wudnt mind hearing more of her music

  • Damn she's deep, very spiritually in touch.. Go India!!

  • i love this song so much her whole cd is hot

  • ok i ain't meanin this as no offense or nothin..but she was lip syncin at that performance

  • No, the audio is a little off in this video. She is really singing because her voice sounds different than the album version.

  • lol yea i know but it just seemed a lil weird when she moved her mouth and no noise came out but i dun actually think she was lip syncin lol

  • the audio and the video are not in sync

  • oh the part where she is talking about cancer, she is referring to Melissa Etheridge...

  • love this song. its soo deep

  • I don't think you are HEARING the lyrics to this song, otherwise you would understand WHY she cut her hair off.

  • i think she looks fabulous.

  • wtf?

  • Heard this song for the first time after I shaved my head, for the same reasons. It meant and still means a lot to me and helped me a lot.
