As a Brit I love British Comedy, the stuff thats worth talking about, there is obviously as much guff british comedy as there is american, but america can produce a good drama. The Wire, The Shield, Dexter, Oz, Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy, The Sopranos, The Pacific, Band of Brothers to name a few. I know most of those are cable shows though and don't fall under ruling from the FCC, Cartoons are great aswell, loving Archer and Bob's Burgers at the moment.
@durro9xl Soz to reply to old comment. But I would rather watch one EP of Eastenders than the retard crap you list. Fucking terrible TV. US glamour crap thats here today, gone tmw. Google UK tv, then judge. idiot.
i'm the idiot? kind of ironic seeing as you spelt you're wrong. UK the office, the inbetweeners, have i got news for you, mock the week and we have much better documentaries and as well as the most subscribed TV show on the whole of youtube Top gear.
I've seen a few episodes of Skins and honestly. It's very realistic for the social groups they're depicting. Sure most teens in UK aren't like that, but I remember events from my teenage years that where very similar to Skins (albeit somewhat dramatised). It's certainly more realistic than a lot of other shows out there... but it's a matter of taste and if you can't relate to it, you probably won't enjoy it.
i hate the american office im a fan of the uk's :) britsh tv like the rest of world has just been influenced heavily by american culture and media but thats a different subject now isn't it
@DeityofStuff no they didn't subtitle Rab C Nesbit as far as I know in England (unless you use teletext) but they did dub a couple of episodes into English. I once saw them on video at a car boot sale.
And by comparison Sanford & Son sucks. Steptoe and Son was about two men in the lowest parts of society where one is deluding himself above his station and the other is living at the expense of his sons work and watching them interact. Sanford & Son makes them no longer rag & bone men, they become standard everyday people, no longer the lowest parts of society, and it makes them black just to insert racial commentary. It is insulting to the original, unimaginative and badly written.
Well I apologise, but the only things I've really been exposed to are english shows. I'm a bit young for rab c nesbit. As for whether it was subtitled, I have no idea. Sorry I couldn't have been more help.
Colonialists?!?!?!?! Don't make us kick your ass....again.
Our TV kicks your TV's ass. Look at The Office...wait, ah mmmmm, never mind that one. How about American Idol....shit!! America's Got Talent? FUCK!!!!
Were you drinking cider when you made this video??
I guess I should have asked if you were drinking cider BEFORE you made the video. You flubbed several lines and seemed a little off. I thought that maybe you had your buzz on. Normally, your rants flow well and your vids are tight. This one was just a little more free flowing.
Thats simply because I am a blithering idiot. In this I decided to make not cuts and do the whole thing in one take. I think it went pretty well, so you can see how bad I am normally. Thats why I edit my videos so much. However I am doing voice training for my Radio and Sound project so maybe I'll get better.
@decojuicer So UK TV never produced anything as like Knight Rider or MacGyver... yeah right, how about... A Touch Of Frost, Murder City, Cracker, The Bill, Primevil, Dr. Who, Casualty, Holby City, Johnathan Creek, Randel & Hopkirk (Deceased). All of these shows had a drama, mystery style bent to them, be it police drama, medical drama, or even supernatural fantasy. And ALL of them where better than the incredibly cheesy and poorly acted shows like Knight Rider and MacGyver.
@TornadoCreator Did you miss the "LOL" at the end of my post? I was being sarcastic. All 3 shows that I named were shitty shows. I'll try to be more clear for you next time.
Sorry, I often miss sarcasm online, especially as the average internet cretin uses "lol" as a synonym for "Hi", "Interesting", "I can't think of a response" and even as a bloody full stop. I think I have developed lol-blindness to save myself from being perpetually pissed off my it.
Dexter! :D Dexter is an american show that's original. Unfortunately...most American tv (not all obviously, take Law & Order and Tru Blood as further examples)is...well...shit. :\
Europe is quite a diverse area. Take a look at some Italian or Spanish TV-shows and you will see that their standard is not as high as it is in the northern countries of Europe, I'm sure they have some great shows in those countries as well I'm just talking in general terms.
I do fully agree that Europe have superior TV-shows. Both when it comes to entraining-, educational- and even news-shows. But PBS and HBO are two networks in the US that actually makes good quality shows.
I see what you mean about skins not really being representative of young people as a whole, but I'd say it is a fairly accurate respresentation of a certain group of young people. I mean pretty much everyone knows someone that hangs around with people like that.
Hell, my life was pretty similar from the ages of 16 to 20! Drugs booze and sex...
Here in California, we watch Porn on television. And the water fountains spew Coca-Cola. And when you open up a new account with bank of America, you get free breast implants. I've got two on my back.
Red Dwarf was remade in the US about three times but was abysmal.
Their version of Men Behaving Badly was more like like Men Behaving Ever So Slightly Naughtily. That's why gems like 30 Rock and Seinfeld shine so brightly amidst the abysmal wank that is American network television.
The other great American shows tend to be from pay cable e.g Dexter, 6 Feet Under, although network shows like Fringe & Supernatural are almost in the same league.
Britain does good costume dramas, nature and comedy.... everything else is corny low budget over acted drivle and controlled by a very small industry of people who dont like outsiders
America is a huge market and because of that reason will always have more opportunity for actors/directors/writers to get original ideas off the ground with reasonable budgets (even if they get cancelled because of ratings pressure)
Our movie industry is an even bigger joke - which is why everyone good leaves
There's loads of great stuff on British TV - compared to much of the wank that's on US TV (I live in California BTW). You only get the few gems over in the UK. 98 per cent of Yank TV is utter buggerwipe.
obviously im speaking about right now (2009) and youre right a lot is shit.. but theres so much tv in the states that even 2% means you have more awesome shows than the rest of us together.... always sunny in philidelphia and curb your enthusiasm, the mentalist, Lie to me, Lost, Flash forward, the new Prisoner remake, mad men, house, ER, 24, Family guy, southpark, the unit, stargate universe, galactica, Psych, The Universe, penn&teller bullshit .. you have ten to one over our good stuff
America's love affair with guns and their belief in the violence handbook, (the bible) which of course says that sex is filthy dirty and shameful kind of explains how & why their mass TV is the way it is. In Europe we laughed at the bizarrely backward reaction to Janet Jackson's 'wardrobe malfunction'. If she had whipped a gun out their would have been no problem. Or maybe their would, as after all black, and white Americans would be afraid of a tooled up black woman whth a nork exposed.
When it comes to US TV vs UK TV, in my opinion, it's Canadian TV who is the most strict! lol. Seriously though, Canadian TV is even more strict than American TV!
@durro9xl Not true! Shameless is just one many American shows that get their ideas from British shows.

hey what makes our tv better is our writers and our money

@nifrued In some areas this is absolutely true. However in many cases plot and overall quality lose out to money.

The A-Team
Knight Rider
MacGyver
