This song was written by Mick and Mick. I read somewhere that Jagger plays rhythm guitar on this one, with Taylor doing the brilliant soloing. Keith later dubbed some of the backing vocals. I really like this track, especially Charly's brilliant drumming on it.
Ain't flingin' tears out on the dusty ground, for all my friends out on the burial ground,Can't stand the feeling getting so brought down. It's just that demon life that's got me in its Sway... Richards didn't play one chord in the recording of this tune. Wasn't even in the building..
@PENTADACTYLON Oh me boy, I'm pretty sure that the booze was the least of his problems during this stretch!! Would've loved to be a fly on the wall during these sessions..
Dam! I came on here to hear a Great Song; and all I got was a buncha pissin' n' moanin' by a buncha Brian Jones lovers who can't let go of the the PAST!
Brian has been DEAD for over 40 years!
GET OVER IT!
Brian was a brilliant instrumentalist and Musician.....but he couldn't write SONGS; and he was a pure-tee PRICK, in "real life".
GET OVER IT!
Mick Taylor was also a Brilliant Musician. But a Prima Donna.
Mick Taylor played most of the lead's in their songs when he was with them. Also played bass when Bill Wyman was a no show.. Great guitarist through and through... They were never as good after he left.
@EvilAnticsLive That was before Taylor came in the band. You can see on the credits of Sticky Fingers, Exile, Goat's Head Soup and It's Only RnR that Taylor played some bass on various songs
Keith Richards is a real backstabber. One time he'll say he always wanted to keep Mick Taylor, then he'll say he didn't really like play with him. Both could be true, but sh** what an **shole. I do think they got evrythng out of Mick Taylor they were going to get. By the time Its Only Rock an Roll came out they were pretty weak and Ron brought in change - not that it was much better - they were going down hill no matter what.
@morahbela Put it this way,Taylor made Keith's life easy.Keith was @ the apex of his addiction @ this time, from what,70 to 76/78 maybe? The only 3 things he knew how to do were play, write, and do drugs. We all know which one of the 3 drove the car.To even try to make sense of his recollection during that time is ludicrous.I do recall a quote though,''Mick is the end all when it comes to guitar playing,I am just a student''.The only reason Woody was brgt in was because MT was on the verge of quittng
@DrDreamPhD I believe this is the only track he played on this album. What a damn shame. He made the Stones so much better when he was playing with them.
@guitarbassplayer68 First if Ronnie had been with the Stones, we would not have Sway, because Taylor wrote this track. So we would not be discussing on ths video.
@widdowson91 I Loved Brian Too..But actually he played NO-GUITAR on Let it Bleed Album(..If you check the liner-notes,you'll find he Masterfully played on ONLY TWO-TRACKS, The AutoHarp on "You Got the Silver" & Percussion on "Midnight Rambler". Sadly he Never made it to the Studio much, and when he did he was found crashed-out ,and Spooning a Buzzing-guitar,which they simply pulled the plug out and let him sleep-thru the work. Let it bleed also introduces Mick Taylor into the band on 2-songs..!
I know he only contributed two songs in Let it Bleed. I was just stating that he was there for the Stones best albums. It's not like Taylor did much on Let it Bleed either. I don't dislike Taylor, but as a musical talent he can't match Jones. He was one of those that could play ANY instrument, which was inevitably why he didn't play guitar much for the Stones. When he left the band they didn't experiment half as much with their music. Sway is Taylor's only stand out song with the Stones.
@dwags2424 He played guitar for the Stones more than you may realise in the early days, and played guitar outside the Stones when he occasionally collaborated with other artists. Also, you don't have to play a lot of guitar to be talented or to be better than somebody else. When he did play guitar for the Stones he beat anything Taylor or Woods did. Not to say Taylor or Woods are bad, but Jones was such a better talent.
@widdowson91 My friend, I respect your opinion of Brian Jones. But the good Lord tells me you're fucked if you think Jones was more talented than Mick Taylor..
@matteosniper Jones was a self destructive, manipulative, controling pce of shit that in the end could'nt tie his own shoes. Mick Taylor was and is one of the finest guitar players the world will ever see!! Just the facts my friend..
@glimmertwinsproduct The sheer amount of instruments Jones played only goes to prove my point. Jones was one of those people who, as soon as he picked up a new instrument, he knew how to play it. I'm sorry, that sort of talent is something Taylor can't match.
Mick Taylor vs. Ronnie Wood? Apples and oranges - don't waste your time comparing. Mick is really great blues player. Ronnie is a fine player too. It's all good.
Mick Taylor and Mick Jagger wrote this song, Richards was absent this day. You can hear Jagger on the rythm guitar and Taylor on the (magnificent) lead guitar.
Mick T wailing at the end should go on longer..the man is a rock guitar god. Just another great song unknown to the masses...I remember when they playeds it last tour and most sat there clueless. It's sad how little credit the Stones get compared to the other classic rock bands..their longevity has been treated as a joke rather than appreciated.
@DazedConfused1969 Pretty sure Keef didn't even make it to the studio for this recording..... Mick Jagger did the rhythm guitar, if memory serves... he might have added a track later......
@DazedConfused1969 "Lol keith couldent play a blues lick like taylor to save his heroin" Oh damn that cracked me up! Thanks, now I'm cleaning coffee off my monitor...
I wonder if Taylor walked out of that studio in 1970 after laying down that lead track and then said to himself: "I really outdid myself tonight and what I did will stand the test of time"
@IdolHans Actually, they recorded Black and Blue without telling Mick Taylor he was out of the band. They brought Ron wood in and didn't say anything until the record was released.
Agreed, Jerry. Many of us who grew up in the 80's think of the stones as an unchanging band of 4.... unaware of the "satellite" musicians- phenominal artists- who helped make this iconic music
Mick Taylor was there when the Stones needed him , gone to soon for-sure. I believe MT is one of the best ever, right up there with Clapton and Hendrix ,Beck ect. The Stones at their best. Everything comes together on this song. Mick Taylor's guitar is killer, but also Charlie Watts' drums are just outstanding on this and push the whole thing over the top to greatness!
Mick T, the greatest lead guitarist of his generation unknown to all but die hard Stones fans...Mick T. elevated the band to the greatest band in the world ....We miss you Mick..
@jbstonesfan I totally agree. I've always wondered why Mick left the Stones. Was Keith a bit jealous of Mick's ability? The lead break on Winter from Goats Head Soup always blows me away, along with many others. Was Ron Wood just a good friend of Keith's, thereby opening the door for his entry into the Stones? I would really like to know. Just imagine how the Sones would have sounded like, if Mick had stayed.
@RojotheRed I think it was a bit of jelousy from Keith, heroin was taking a toll on Taylor and he was tired of not getting songwriting credit from the glimmer twins. Ron Wood was actually a friend of Mick Jaggers before Keith. It's Only Rock and Roll was orginally Woodies tune. (remember Wood wrote lots of tunes for Faces and Rod Stewart and sang lead vocals on Ooh La La). After Keith and Ronnie met and started playing together they just meshed. Taylor was amazing indeed.
@jadejoky28 I always credited MT with It's only R&R. (partially). I never knew that Woody had a hand in it. My impression was that Ronnie was Keith's friend, purely because of the fun they had together on stage. I guess that MT was proof of just how hard it was to keep with the Stones on the road. (especially Keith). H will do that to ya. It's a real shame about not getting his share of writing credit. Jagger's business acremen with do that to ya. MT must be a bitter man at this point.
@RojotheRed you gotta think too that taylor was like 8 years younger than keith and jageger and he was a kid in the biggest group ever im sure that was hard on him in an artistic way and professional .
mick taylor just melted my face! mick j and keith need to send mick a thank you card for making the stones the best band in the world and giving them their best era 69'-74'

The Stones at their best. Everything comes together on this song. Mick Taylor's guitar is killer, but also Charlie Watts' drums are just outstanding on this and push the whole thing over the top to greatness!

Mick Taylor's guitar solo energizes Mick and he starts shouting "Hey!" over and over because he's so excited.

@DrMerkwuerdichliebe brian was a visionary, but was too fucked up to contribute to the band anymore--a lot like syd barrett.

@zenphil You're right. Brian jones loved the Blues as much as drugs. Acid casualties. Sad
