  • Hey ed. I got a 95 sitting out front waiting for the same thing. How long did the it take to pull the dash. Never did a dash before but I do have the all data for it. Hoping I can find a way around draining the ac

  • @armystrong8989 Read the description and watch the end of the video. This job is way easier than how I did it.

  • @edzgarage should of looked at that first. Thanks ed

  • @armystrong8989 Good luck with the repair!

  • @edzgarage turns out the 90sport is a bit different. Ended up bypassing the heater core. Thanks for sharing though.

  • I just had the heater core in a 1994 Audi replaced by a shop. They did not have to remove the console; only the lower part of the driver side dash and the glove box, together with a few pieces of ductwork behind. Piece of cake: only about eight hours labor. They used an OEM core at great expense, because the Bilstein version looked like junk

  • @Sailor36 I wish my job went that easy.

  • @edzgarage so i tried reving it to 3k RPM but nothing came out... does this mean the water pump needs replacement? dont know what else to do.

  • @RaffNTemp If the car overheats then you may need a new water pump.

  • You are a Pro Ed, wish i could help you out so that i will learn some hands on as an intern...lol good job and will done video.

  • @kinakusgansacebu Thanks for the comment! I learn as I go along. Don't be afraid to try something you've never done before.

  • @edzgarage so i try to bleed the system today but nothing came out??? dont know why plz help me out

  • @vaginco987654321 Is there antifreeze in the over flow reservoir? Is the heater on HIGH? If yest to all rev the engine to 2-3k RPM with the bleeder opened up. It should start flowing. If it doesn't your core bypass might not be opening or the water pump is not pumping.

  • ya I know the manuels give a lot of iformtion but not all I had one hellova time with the wifes rack and pinon they said to drop the crossmember but you can't it's welded to the subframe and that's what I had to do lower the subframe to get it out

  • OMG

  • @TheFred1952 Yeah, not my finer 2 plus weeks. The car is till going though.

  • You have nerves of steel my friend. That is a massive undertaking and you probably saved over 2 grand if a shop would have done it.

  • @Motoveight Thanks for the comment! I did a lot more work then I need to, but didn't know that until I was so far into it. I did save a lot of money though. The car is still on the road.

  • @edzgarage Rover flow bottle??? im bleed the system and let you know how it turns out

  • @RaffNTemp LOL Over Flow, Sorry.

  • @edzgarage no theres no leak at all... i watched your other video where you replaced the thermostat and you bled the system . is that what i would have to do??

thanks for responding so quick to my question

  • @RaffNTemp I would try bleeding first. Make sure the rover flow bottle is full.

  • so my heat doesnt work on my 97 a6 does that mean the heater core needs replacing??

  • @RaffNTemp Check my answer to your first post.

  • i have a 97 a6 and my heat doesnt work at all.. does that mean the heater core needs to be replaced?

  • @RaffNTemp Do you smell antifreeze in the car? Is the car loosing antifreeze? If no to both then you may need to bleed the system or check the bypass valve.

  • STOP..........THIS IS NOT HOW ITS DONE.........THE DASH DOES NOT HAVE TO COME OUT......EVER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>on an A4 yes.....the whole dash...which I believe is what the person who told this guy was thinking of....

  • @acmbilly Read the description... Thanks for watching!

  • I did the heater matrix (same part) on an audi 80. You look like you had the same fun i did.

  • @zaftra I will never do it that way again! lol

  • @edzgarage Oh eck, I have to do it again on my A4!!! must be a wealness with audi

  • 6 HRS?? KKKKK IMPOSSIBLE

  • i did the same job on my audi recently, but i didn't need to take it apart that much, i uploaded a video on that, check my channel.

  • Hey can you tell me how to replace a blower motor in 1995 Audi a6. And whrere it is. Every time i turn my ac on high it blows warm air....idk what's the problem. Thanks.

  • @StasLoban93 The fan is in the same housing as the heater core, but it doesn't sound like you need a fan. You need to have the air conditioner fixed.

  • I sent you a friends request because I didn't want to clog up your thread here as my next question was lengthy. could you possibly send me a message instead and I'll just reply, if that's easier for you?

  • I need to replace the core in my 95 A6 quattro...but after watching this, I'll just deal w/ the cold. My stereo hasn't worked in nearly 2 years because I haven't figured out how to get to the harness.

  • @TinnInches LOL I hear ya, but check out the description. This job is not nearly as hard as I made it be. It's actually easy if you read the description. I learned how to do this the hard way.

  • @edzgarage I might be overlooking something? I don't see anything in the description that gives a how to? Looks like if I can figure out at least how to get that center consel out, I can address my harness issue with the stereo. I put less than 5k/yr on the car (has 131k), but I would like to get her squared away. (side note: my only major issue is the lack of 1st gear, I can't put it into 1st manually, and it shifts out of 1st after only a couple of feet from a dead stop. )

  • @TinnInches The part that says UPDATE----- A YouTuber informed me that all you have to do is remove the center counsel and remove the screws I pointed out in my video. It only took him 45 minutes to pull the heater box assembly. Sure beats what I did!

There are two screws that release the heater box housing. After you find those screws the rest of the video shows how I got it out and back in. You transmission problem may be due to a stuck actuator in the trans. You may need a trans flush.

  • Just did this job in the same car. Did not have to pull the dash at all. Center console and glove box have to come out, as well as the drivers underside kick panel to get access to the vent hoses, but that is it. Took about 2 hours to tear down.

  • @Patatron Yea, I know this now! lol Did you see the description box?

  • @edzgarage I had not expanded your description, Just saw it now. Either way, this job sucks!

  • @Patatron I agree! If it needs another heater core it's going to be junked!

  • the 1994-1997 Audi A6 was assembled in

    Neckarsulm, Germany

    Monterrey, Mexico

    Changchun, China

    Jakarta, Indonesia

    Tokyo, Japan

  • hey, i just purchased a '97 Audi A6 quattro wagon and as i was driving it home i had to pull over and park it, found out the Heater Core needed to be replaced... Marjor "L"

I have my mechanic who specializes in German vehicles working on it, I have to wait until the 15th of April to finally drive my "New Car" smh... but off the subject the radio safe lock is activated and I plan on installing my head unit, is there any details that might be helpful when I get my "New Car" back...

  • @PatrickWing Too bad about the car needing work right away. Hopefully the shop wont gouge you too bad. My car had the factory radio when I got it. It said "radio lock" too. Someone wrote the code in the owners manual to unlock it, so check there.

  • I love your stuff, thanks! A little more detail sometimes would be good....

I did this job without removing the dash, but had to remove plenty! All underdash and center console etc.......

  • @bicks00 Thanks for the comment! This job was defiantly not one of my best "how I did it" videos. To my credit though, the car is still on the road.

  • Nice, that's a big job to take on at home! Your braver than most mechanics I know

  • @centralmobile Brave... Crazy... That's me! lol Thanks again.

  • oh my god! i have just done one of these, same car, and no you definitely dont have to remove the dash, took me (a mechanic i might add!) 1.25 hrs to get it out.

  • @centralmobile Thanks... where were you a year ago when I did this! lol Anyway, the car is still on the road and the heat still works. Thanks for the comment!

  • Are you using G12 coolant? In the water pump video it looked like you were running the radioactive-green stuff.

  • @Gorillathehun The coolant I used was Audi approved, but not specific to Audi only.

  • @edzgarage Did you have to take your car to a shop to have the technician remove all the refrigerant out of the AC condenser? I mean how did you disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core pipes?Did you just unclamp and pull it off? I read a post on Audiworld forum and a guy said I have to purge all the refrigerant before I could change my heater core.He even mentioned it could take 4 hours to remove everything to get to the heater core and you said it was 45minnutes! I'm so confused.

  • @vanlongse No, you don't have to do anything with the freon in the AC system. The heater core is full of antifreeze and you simply unscrew the clamps and remove it. Make sure to read the comments and description on this job for other tips from people that have done this job.

  • Thanks for making the video. I got a quote $1250 New Zealand D to do the job. I decided after watching that this job was too intensive for me. Cheers MZ

  • @TheZonneveld It is a very time consuming process. If you read the description you'll see it could have been a lot easier, but it would still be a big job.

  • did you record the main point like where the screws are when taking off the dash i have to do it in my 97 and i dont even know where to start, cant even find the screws

  • @andresarango22 If the 97 is like the my 95 then all you have to do is take the center counsel out and remove the screws I showed near the end of the vid. I have an explanation in the description. Good luck!

  • I did this by just pulling the center console as others said, however, I am spending the extra cash and replacing the blower motor at the same time. No sense doing all this work just have that go bad a month down the road. Going to get the family to stick with Honda's. What a terrible design.

  • @BassCat200 Thanks for the comment! I agree, the design is terrible! I wish I would have known that the job could have been done easier though before I did mine. The good news is that the car is still on the road and has heat. Good plan replacing the fan motor while it's out.

  • @BassCat200 By the way, I bought my heater core at Advance Auto and their design was metal tubes instead of the plastic.

  • @BassCat200 That's good. If I need to replace again, I'll get my next one from Advanced Auto.

  • euro cars are the worst designed cars for servicing for us poor auto mechanics!

i call bmws bmtroubleyous! and audis are a 4 ring circus! lol.

  • @mrlems lol I like your assessments of the vehicles. Thanks for the comment!

  • i am about to do this tonight on my 98 a6 wagon...........do i need to take the dash off or not????can i just do the center counsel and glove box?????

  • @monstermama86 I don't know for sure on the 98. I would start with just the center counsel and see if the screws are accessible. Good luck.

  • I was thinking of doing this on my Taurus, do you recommend it?

  • @Intelpentium54321 Sorry, I have no experience with the Taurus heater core.

  • how chenged front brake pad for this car

  • @olim1974 I've done them before. It's really easy, not much different then any other car. I might be doing a vid on how to do them before winter.

  • ha ha ha dude! "i dont suggest you do this if you dont every want the car to run again" I FEEL YOUR PAIN That is how i am felling right now... i am at the almost fully disassembled stage now... i had to take apart everything.. stering colum dash airbags pillars radio.. shit good job! this is not for the faint of heart. i am not concerned about the disassembly just the re-assembly i need to take photo's of this job 4 sure or no one will belive me

  • @1DavidSe Thanks for the comment. Did you read in my description that you don't need remove the dash? I found this out after my job was done. Good luck!

  • @edzgarage Yeah i actually have a 05 neon srt4 and in my case i actually had to remove the dash i took some video and i may do a post dont know yet.... took me 10 FREAKIN hours!!! but i save myself 700$ plus tax i may add so i feel really good about myself... thanks bud

  • I'll tell you what I find out about the AC if you tell me how you fit inside the box that febi Bilstein (made in China) p.o.s. new core... or maybe you reordered a diff OEM brand? :P There's no way you put it back together with the one in the videoclip :)

  • @carmatt59 No, I used the core in video. It fit just like the original.

  • @edzgarage (doing it this way, as is a posting error if "reply to your reply"):

Well, I found your videoclip actually while I was trying to figure out how exactly the box comes out, but I had already disassembled the center console(s) after eyballing the following article- audiworld. com/ tech/ int57. shtml. After watching your video was expecting to find two big bolts or screws... However, your videoclip is pretty helpful nonetheless.

  • @carmatt59 I'm glad it all worked out for you. My car went through the winter without a hitch. Now I need to recharge the air conditioner... oh, wait you can't. There's no low side valve for recharging. Have you ever worked on your air?

  • By the way, all the "professionals" at the parts stores have no idea what that rubbery sealant is... Oh, also...were you able to find the "weatherstripping" tape impregnated with "tar"-like stuff that seals the box to the dash wall's opening? Or you just used a one-sided normal weatherstripping? I really thank you....doing the job right now! :P

  • @carmatt59 Mine sealed up good enough with what was left from the factory. It wasn't perfect but I haven't had any issues.

Did you use the short cut I discovered after the job was complete? Just remove the screws behind the center vents.

  • I would like to know what type of sealant you did use to secure the core inside the box instead of the factory rubbery gooey stuff . Thanks

  • @carmatt59 I used high temp silicone.

  • You don't need to take any dash out!!! you just unscrew the vents on the bottom that are attached to the heater box and pull it out from under the hood, this is the same design on audi 100/200/a6/s6 84-97 (c4)

  • @wolfhaul I know that now. Thanks for the comment... all 20of theme lol

  • I just finished this on my 95 A6...just had to remove the center console but still a job

  • Nice! Thanks for the comment!

  • Holy Piss!! my Lincoln needz a new heater core & I hear I gotta take apart the hole dash as well, I'm scared now... o.O!!!!

  • Good luck! It turns out it I could have done this a lot easier by just removing the center counsel. I wish I would have know that before I nearly disassembled the car lol

  • @edzgarage that looked like a nightmare! I looked at your other video before replacing a cv joint and it helped out a lot. I need to get to the heater mixer which I believe is inside the black ducting in front of heater core. Do you think it is possible to just take out the console to get to it? where do I start? What will need to come out?

  • @jastewart878 In the video I show the center of the counsel where there are a couple screws. I have been told by others that did this job after me that all you have to do is remove the center counsel trim and controls above the radio and you can access the screws. Once those are out the rest is pretty easy. There's a metal strap holding the heater box in place under the hood you have to remove, the heater hoses, and a few connectors to disconnect, then it should come right out. Good luck!

  • haha, I bet you wish you had know that beforehand! Thanks, is the car going to make it through the winter?

  • You're not kidding I wish I had known. lol

Yes, the is going to make it.

  • @edzgarage

Yes indeed, and the two screws are actually keep in place the footwell air ducts on both sides. The job actually look more difficult than it really is. By the way, the Wipers mechanism NEEDS to be unbolted otherwise you cannot pull the box out (no space). Thanks

  • @carmatt59 Yes, the wiper mech does need to come out. It really is not as difficult as I made it! lol I guess we live and learn.

  • since you are now doing struts...use a pipe wrench through the spring to take off the nut that holds the strut in its cartridge. You DO NOT have to take out the strut!!

  • Thanks! Check the next video on this car. I did just that!

  • niceee. i think i did mine in 2 hours

  • Did you watch this first?

  • Cool will make sure I look into that. Just hope it doesn't cost me much. But I am assume it is not the fun since it blows good. So many be the bypass valve. Will look into it.

    Thanks once again

  • Good luck!

  • Got the same car. Got it $700, changed the tranny, damn the tranny fluid aint cheap, changed the steering pump etc fixed it for around 1500 Around 212000 miles on it. Love it. My heat comes on and off..it works but I just do not seems to get it working when I want to. Is is the heater core?!! hope not

    Amazing video man!

  • Thanks for the comment!

Sounds like your problem is the fan. It is just as hard to replace as the heater core. It could also be the bypass valve.

  • I believe it was me who told you about the heater core...I guess I should have made it a little clearer...the mechanic took the top plastic cover which is under the hood which covers the heater core, among other things. Then he put an after market heater core. Works great, the only complaint he had was the incredibly tight space he had to work with

    Either way, great work!

  • Thanks!

That method would have been really tight. There are also hidden screws that would have been really difficult to find unless you already knew where they were.

  • Its like working on a mercedes. It takes a life time to do a simple thing.

  • LOL... sure seemed like forever to get this done.

  • I have the same 95 a6 Q as well, it blew a head gasket. Hit a big puddle and just enough water got in the engine, but not enough to hydrolock it. Wish I knew how to replace it myself. Anyway, great vid, it's hard to part with that car isn't it?

  • Yes, it is hard to part with these cars. I need to replace my valve guides and seals. I may be pulling the heads next summer.

  • i just removed the whole dash on my 97 a4 for a faulty heater core and i was ready to have a nervous breakdown until i saw your video. Thanks for posting this. I have a little more hope now than i did before.

  • I feel your pain! Just take your time, it can be done. Thanks for the comment!

  • wow what a job....nice

  • Thanks!

  • Time like these you have to save money. Good job Ed!!

  • good lord , what a nightmare. i feel for you brother.

  • The worst is over... I hope!

  • WoW!! that was a big job!!!

    5*****

  • Thanks!!! Yea, it was huge!!!!

  • Wow... you must have been waiting for me activate this video! That was fast!!!
