Well, as I see, in Eastern Europe it is so. Do the singers choose the songs or songs are chosen by others "imposed" on them? On the whole, I've witnessed GREAT voices, styles and beautiful local music in this show ("...Idol", or whatever) in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania so far. And yet have to see/hear more.

Well, the jury give them tasks...For example to sing with a choir, soundtrack, to sing in hard languages(for pronouncing), to sing a song, written in the year they was born, to sing in a duet. Things like that. Usually they are the people who have to choose the songs but the musicians and the jury tell them some songs as a joker.
