@LadeeCen These gowns are called 'butterfly' because of the cape thing on them. After Diane left and after all the member changes, the gown ownership fell to Mary. She kept these and nearly every other Supremes outfit in storage until a few years ago when she put them into a traveling exhibit. Interestingly, the exhibit is currently in my city and I went to see it. The butterflys, like many of them are hand-sequined from head to toe except for the cape. A staggering amount of work, but worth it
This is priceless. Obviously, MsRoss luvs 2 entertain BUT she seems 2 also luv all that goes on around her & becomes the "entertained." In "entertained" mode she 4gets the words 2 songs & upon realizing it, recoups by singing stronger, louder & making those fantastic moves. Watch how many times she misplaces the lines to "I Hear A Symphony" & never misses a beat! Besides being an above average singer, she is just "something" u have 2c. As MsWilson said, "Honey, we is terrific" & they were!
I Love the Supremes & everything they stood for but to b honest
This Diana Show : Diana & the supremes goes Hollywood Just to much I believe after Flo left they Traded in great harmonies for (G)lam yes Diana is legendary & deserves all her accolades but people forget That there were Three ladies who made history & blazed trails for the comming genaration & not one grammy we the fans need to do something about that!!!!! & Flo naturally had light hair & did sport a blonde wig way b4 Mary
Release this show on CD, I have this on LP and known that there is a Japanese release but these can be upwards of $50 to purchase on Amazon, I do not understand why Motown refuses to release full back catalogues like most record labels...
@rebbeccanne This is the same arrangements that they performed on all the live shows. This is not fast compared to a 1975 show. Talk about fast. Mary, Cindy, and Sherrie would FLY through the hits medley. Sherrie sings Love Child and she can barely keep up with the band! Even the 1970 lineup with Jean Terrell, they sped through the hits medley. In my opinion, the songs aren't very enjoyable if it sounds like your record player is stuck on the 78 RPM setting.
i was younger hearing this medley i admire them so much i hve to borrow thier album just to hear them'' reynner16 i love cindy birdsong wow''reynner16
Mary looked great in the blonde wigs, she had a shorter style one that was really sharp. I remember watching the TCB special when it first aired, their live version of I Hear A Symphony is just incredible, and they looked gorgeous is those gowns!
These were their gowns of gowns and in person even more spectacular. I also wondered how they walked out to the see-through plexiglass stage down those narrow platforms without being terrified much less performed on that elevated stage with its appearance of no support. This is a classic Supremes moment and evidences fully why they became so enormous in the entertainment world. We're seeing talent, beauty, glamour, discipline and great musicianship.
@tvfan06 I remember Mary talking about the blonde. She joked that she must have seen too many Doris Day movies.
Florence once had a brown wig with blonde highlights in it that she wore in the early days. According to Mary, that's where Flo got the nickname 'Blondie.'
@fwsinned I'm not sure what Diane was up to. It looks hurriedly put together. On the TCB album, there's a picture from a rehearsal of this performance and Diane is wearing a curly updo wig. It looks alot nicer. Another note: Diane was notorious for changing wigs. At the very beginning of the TCB program, the three girls walk towards the stage from different sides. If you watch Diane, she has her favorite short-crop wig then she turns to face the camera and the wig is a curly updo.
@tvfan06 No, you're not the only that loves Mary in the blonde wig...Many of us lived through that period and thought it was a bold, yet fantastic thing to do...Further evidence that Mary and Florence had their own personalities that fans adored...Cindy was a bit of an after-thought, but some of us accepted her...Trail blazers is what these girls were!! ALL OF THEM!!
@tvfan06 And Cindy always seemed to wear the "Hair Helmut" during her DRATS period. After Jean came along, she seemed to let her hair down, both physically and personality-wise.
sing diana now we see why ms ross is a legend ilove me some ms ross out of a trillion stars only her star will shine bright . the one and only true diva
Thanks! What's nice about these clips from the show is that you can hear Mary & Cindy: on the soundtrack album they (and the Temptations' backgrounds) were turned way down. It was very disappointing.
This was a big deal back then. Black folks were rarely on TV and for 2 Black singing groups to have a TV special was really a big deal. Every Black household watched this show. And bought the album that went with it.
@alexanuchid TCB stands for 'Taking Care of Business'. In 1968, Diana Ross & The Supremes with the Temptations did a fantastic musical show called TCB. There was also an album called TCB and it featured the songs from this show.
@babybluemusic426 I do indeed. If you click the pull-down menu just above this video, it will display all of my videos.
I have this hit's medley, Stop in the Name Of Love, Somewhere, and the Temptations doing I'm losing you and Aint Too Proud to Beg. They all have TCB in the title somewhere.
I also have clips from the 1969 GIT on Broadway program which was another Supremes & Temptations TV special.
before this PERFORMANCE, the TEMPTS had WOWED the audience. then the GIRLS came out with their SOFT soul and just made us forget that the MEN had just blown us away. DR & THE SUPREMES are UNMATCHED. i look and STILL to this day, THEY MAKE ME SMILE!!!
WOW! I remember watching this on TV when it aired in '68. I always wished it had been released in any format. It was such an incredible show, just oozing with all kinds of pizazz. Although the Temptations were good, the ladies were my favorite. Thanks so much for posting.
Thanks a lot for posting this always great clip. It's really sad that possibly because of various greedy copyright stakeholders, this special can't be officially released in clearly remastered digital DVD format. I always remember reading that 1 or 2 weeks later, NBC aired the famous leather jacket-clad Elvis special, too, yet somehow that's been on DVD for years now. The only clearly restored segment available from this show actually is the "Stop!" snippet on the Motown25 DVD!
Why oh why oh why doesn't someone release this outstanding, spectacular t.v. special on a DVD? This is fabulous!! All three girls looked stunning. Thanks for sharing . . . and it's nice to be able to hear Miss Birdsong!!
@paul51 My understanding is Berry Gordy owns the master tape, but can't be bothered at this point trying to release it on DVD. He would have to negotiate with the former Supremes and the Tempts for releases and doesn't think it's worth it.
it's a nice performence the dresses are great it looks like diane weard her real hair and not a wig and it looks nice and I like mary with blonde hair
all three did a great job
it's nearly impossible to imagine such a show today with such a expensive stage design and such a big orchestra
I too am grateful for this clip. You can clearly hear Cindy holding her own on soprano throughout. She stood strong and beautifully. Later with Mary and Jean she blossomed into a very strong, comical and stunning performer in her own right. Too bad we dont have clips of that emergence.
Great clip! Diana "turns it out" here. Her energy, her fire, her sensuality and sheer star power are undeniable. I've always loved the twisting moves that Mary and Cindy perform at 0:30. Great stuff, all around!
I had the soundtrack to this & G.I.T on Broadway on LP and must have played them to death growing up!
