Nice eye! Since it was one of my first comps I put this together in After Effects, and had yet to be taught anything about how digital assets tend to be vivid, and matching RGB white/grey/black levels, etc. I'll keep future work from that pitfall!
That's exactly what I made this in! (either that or the older 8.5) Overall the hardest part from my background of work was accurately tracking and aligning the whole scene, given the shaking and all. It did take most of a week of tests to get the fluid dirt sim right, but the debris is just a simple shower of particles with maybe 20 chunks instanced, overall things can get way more complicated. Then render everything in layers and tweak them about in a comp package. (After effects in this case)
Only tutorial I've read on the subject was the Maya help file to get used to Maya Live. I've since been using Boujou at school, which is so easy it's practically a joke, the layout is very clear and obvious, or just use the wizard and you'll get going right away. I've heard great things about PFTrack, especially being able to use geometry you've built to align the track to your 3d scene, but I've never tried it hands on.
Got some footage, tracked it with Maya Live, watched too much Discovery channel while they showed tunneling drills and went that route. Particles spray from the front as it first comes up, then 15 or so chunks were instanced onto those. Then throw a few hundred larger rigid bodies up as well. Cover it all with a Maya fluid sim to emulate some dirt clouding and there you go!
Thank you! I learned how to do all this by playing around, and what I've learned with tons of tests over a few years, those videos comprise 3 reels worth of toying around. Just a week before doing this I posted a test of motion tracking where using only the Maya help file I got the hang of that concept.
Thats hard to believe that you taught yourself, thats what I am trying to do. Definitely nowhere near what your doing but in a few year I hope so. Keep up the good work!
Yeah, I spent a full summer before my sophomore year in high school figuring out through trial and error how to simply navigate the infinite menus, by the time I finally got into actual 3D classes (I started playing in a general computing class freshman year) I had rendered out half of my first reel and was just doing independent study.
What software have you used for the 3d modeling ??

In general, the darks are darker and highlights are brighter because most cameras don't have a very wide value range.

try using rebel cc its a free afx plugin that color corrects almost automaticly

To copy and paste a chunk of the video info; "It was animated and tracked in Maya, with the rendering being done through Mental Ray."
