A lot of people ask "Who's the best Batman? or "Who's the best Joker?" What I'd to know is, who is the best Alfred? Is it Alan Napier from the 60s T.V series, Michael Gough from the Burton/Schumacher movies or Michael Caine fromteh Chris Nolan movies?

good question. i'd have to say Gough. i grew up with the Tim Burton movies (and as we speak erasing from my mind the latter two comedy Batmans). Michael Caine does a good performance and acts a lot less like a butler and maybe more like a father and best friend

Gough is more caricatured and comic-book like while Caine tries to be a bit more like a real person. They're two completely different things so it's kind of hard to compare them.

But you mentioned one incorrect fact.

The Internet DID exist back in the 80's. Yes it was limited compared to today. But it existed.

Stuff like Quantam Link for the C64, Compuserve, tons of BBS (Bulletin board systems) all existed back them.

I used to cruise the net back on my mighty Commodore 64 with 1200 baud modem, downloading bootleg Commodore 64 games.

Well, I was equally disappointed that the animated series wasn't mentioned, but it would probably take quite a bit of time for James to list all the reasons why that series was so awesome before giving it 5 out of 5 Harley Quinns or whatever he'd use, and that's assuming he wouldn't bring up the Justice League series or waste any time talking about the crappy newer series 'The Batman.'

It's going to be hard for me to wait for the next installment to come out next week.

Well... he could always dedicate one segment to the animated series, particularly the DC Animated Universe.

Seriously it would be a shame to miss out on that, Batman is practically the one who launched the DCAU.

Heck if it weren't for the renewal of JLU, Epilogue, an episode focusing on Batman and bringing it full circle, WOULD have been the overall finale.

I too am a really big fan of the animated series, and as I said before, I too am disappointed he's not going to talk about it. It did help introduce many to Batman. I was just listing what I thought may have been the reason for James to make that decision.

Hey, maybe if he gets enough requests for it from the fans, he'll do it later on. I mean, he's doing an AVGN review on 'Superman 64' pretty much just because there has been such a demand from the fans for him to do it.

James, you forgot to mention the influence of Zorro, Doc Savage, and Sherlock Holmes on Bob Kane's and Bill Finger's creation of Batman and the stories.

I enjoyed it, but I believe the 60s Batman series perpetuated the image of Batman that Bob Kane didn't intend. When Kane created Robin in 1940, it wasn't in order enhance the character of Batman, but to deaden the darker ideals of the story. They needed a young readership. This helped to launch Batman into "camp" and it was all downhill until the 80s when Robin finally grew up, then was killed, then came back as a cooler, tougher character. I don't mind "camp" but Batman isn't meant to be campy.
