I actually read the Pascal source material, and he mentioned that people cannot be converted by logical proof alone. And I think he was onto something. Not all people are capable of critical thinking and not all people are emotionally sound. This is why "the wager" works so well. It sounds like a "common sense" argument and people will still fall for it. It is effective.

I am an agnostic who sees it as it is and I don't see "The Wager" falling out of favor with apologists.

The best way to some up Pascal's Wager is to say "What have you got to lose?" This can be applied to gambling, risk taking, etc.

Agreed, it is emotional manipulation pure and easy. When Pascal originally conceptualized his wager, it may have been the cream of the Christian thought crop, but it isn't anymore. But the emotional manipulation of the weak-minded and weak-willed will continue if people still embrace Christianity from here out.

Well, I wouldn't actually agree entirely. I am a Catholic myself and I don't follow Pascal's Wager. But what I learned in Philosophy is that PW is more like saying if you believe and you are wrong, how is that any worse than where you are now? It's like Martin Luther King in the CRM. If he didn't succeed, how are AA's any worse than they would be. If he was right, there is alot to gain. that is the idea behind PW. Probably to say, "Take a risk", "Go For it" etc.

I don't agree with you totally either, but I think we see something deeper in the argument. It is not an argument meant to persuade like the ontological or teleological arguments for the existence of God. Those arguments are meant to convince. The wager is the same way, but it is more subtle in its formation and application. This may be why freethinkers like myself see through it.

I would say that is closer to what was meant by it. In this particular case, it was aimed at faith. However the wager can be and has been used in other situations as well. So, it might be best not to read into it too much as a hidden agenda and all that.  I would just stick with the "give it a shot" idea, which is what I was taught for it to mean.

i think you bring up some very good points about atheism. Really, the only guarantee you have with an atheist, is that they lack a belief in deities, and that belief doesn't have to founded on rationality, unfortunately. Though, a possible reason why some atheists convert might be that the conversions are irrational atheists. It's a possiblity at least.

Convert doesn't always have a religious connotation attached to it. I can convert sugar to alcohol. I can convert from believing to not believing. Also, a relgion is a set of beliefs. Atheism is a lack of belief. No belief= Not religious.

Very nice, and I've always been an Atheist, though I am part of a very Christian family. You're also on the money when you say some people with things such as Autism can't understand religion. I have Asperger's Syndrome (mild form of Autism) and don't understand why people believed in such things, even when I was younger, just thinking it was illogical and made no sense.

Anyway, keep up the videos and keep up the great work RRS.
