  • It's funny how everything good that happened during capitalistic times is considered as achievement of capitalism, ignoring Harvey's example of China, ignoring the technical revolution etc.

  • Comment removed

  • The only reason we have so much "leisure time" is because workers demand the 8 hour work day in the industrialized nations...

But economists today refer to 'leisure time' when someone is unemployed...

  • @Christ724 Another fun thing about the "increased leisure time" is that in Hunting and Gathering societies the average work day was about 5/6 hours.

  • Let Prof.Harvey finish it ! GOD !

  • Three words : ResourceBased Economy!

  • The programme is called HARDTalk for a reason. I don't think she's stupid, it looked as if she was acting as the opposition.

  • @windowsclassic good point and she is, just not a very intelligent opposition. She has clearly put no research into the interview before doing it

  • @Duffweiserable Yes, it seems likely.

  • @windowsclassic Credit to her though she did get to the point of his reasoning.

  • I've got to say... life expectancy doesn't actually mean how long people expect to live, it's the average taken from the lifespans of all the people

People live to more or less the same maximum age as at any time

A higher life expectancy simply means more people live to that maximum age!

  • Health and leisure time. Tell that to the people in Indonisia and China working 12 hour shifts to produce cheap products for the market. Capitalism is just investing in non existent money to create more money. Socialism deals in real capital and real productive power. Capitalism is a anarchistic system that enslaves millions of people in poverty.

  • What about Ludwig von Mises? Screeeewww Adam Smith!

  • this woman is asking dumb questions "but is it not (wealth) already spreading around? i mean look at lifespan, 1999 were living 75 - 80 isn't that the effects of capitalism?"

did you not listen to anything he just said? no it is not! he just told you that wall street fat cats have 5 mansions, maybe that seems normal to you but not to the rest of society. fuck your better health and leisure time

  • The reason why we have leisure time is the labor movement, not the bosses. Somebody needs to educate this bitch about how many people took bats and bullets in the head just to get the 8 hour work day.

  • BBC woman doesn't agree with re-distributing wealth because she's rich...

  • The way the reporter is talking about capitalism is idiotic. She makes the point that life expectancy has increased from 1901 as if Britain was communist pre 1901. In this country if one thing has contributed to extending life expectancy it is the NHS which is socialised medicine and not a capitalist idea.

  • @nathfrancis01 The woman asked the right questions. Drew some good responses. Luckily the guy she asked is an intelligent, thinking man who could offer insight and was not your usual socialist wanker who would have started reverse psychology at the first hint of criticism, trashing capitalism with idiotic pop psychology in place of intelligence. First socialist I've ever seen make sense and seem reasoned. Still completely unworkable but the guy's reasoning for wanting change is admirable.

  • how annoying it is to see a simple-minded, stupid, vulgar journalist trying to find stupid contradictions to an intelligent man's discourse. She must feel so clever... damn!

  • All the good things that have happened, are, of course, due to capitalism. Why? because I said it. :P

  • I want to shut this woman up

  • I hate it how the camera every now and again cuts to her smirking face as if this man is speaking absolute rubbish. This is an attempt by the media to influence the perceptions of the viewer and it sucks, just like the BBC.

  • This man is deadly right!

  • Yep, i don't see people having more leisure time now, than say, in the 60s and 70s...far from it. People live longer because medicine has advanced, but it's not absolutely necessary to have a capitalist system to have developments in medicine. She also seems to want to pidgeon-hole him in order to tear him down.

  • What is it that this media corporate whore has so much trouble understanding?

  • Comment removed

  • more leisure better health? What the fuck is she talking about?

  • what an ignorant bitch.

  • Capitalism is a parasite system. As Hardy said, perpetual 3 percent growth is needed for this system to be functional. But, new investments require more and more spending of new materials (resources from our planet and nature). It is like a parasite, it feeds on host, until there is nothing left...

  • Is the interviewer a cheerleader for Capitalism or what? Journalistic skepticism is one thing but she seems to be very keen to prove everything he is saying to be wrong. Not surprising I suppose since the corporate media (of which even the BBC is a part) is one of the pillars of the 'free' market economy.

Opposition to Capitalism doesn't (and shouldn't) have to be about envy/ hatred of the rich. It should about wanting to live better, more rationally and in harmony with the environment.

  • @philduval7 - The BBC are very pro-establishment, but to say that the BBC is part of the corporate media and 'free' market agenda is really nonsense. It may be journalistically lame and uncritical, but accrues its revenue from a mandatory public license fee - e.g. the antithesis of the free market way in which its rivals e.g. sky operate.

In addition, David Harvey is perfectly capable of answering her questions. It is called Hard Talk, not sycophant talk.

  • @tacklinfuel1

And whose interest does it benefit by the BBC being jounalistically "lame and "uncritcal"? Could it be Corporate Investor class? Just maybe???

  • @tonyg0123 You're a complete fucking dope. No one has the time to untangle the stupidities and inanities with which you view the world.

"Harvey ... never actually ran a successful business, yet somehow understands how the economy works"

What does one have to do with the other? There are millions of people operating businesses who don't have a clue about econmics on a grander scale.

Milton Fucking Friedman never ran a business. Ditto Ronald Raygun. And both of them evil dopes. Fuck you.

  • When rich people have money, they do not stick it in the their mattress Harvey. They invest it! Banks then loan that money to businesses on interest who then invest it in their expansion of more firms, ect. This in term creates jobs for those "poor people". Let's say they do buy 5 mansions with their millions of dollars. Well, who builds the mansions? Where is the capital coming from? These are questions you need to answer Harvey. You will start to see there is more equality than u think

  • @tonyg0123

Oh my God! You really have no grasp on Marxist theory do you. I wouldn't 't even know how to begin with you. Harvey does answer your questions if you would be intelligent enough to enquiry and listen to his Lectures on his website.

ONe question for you: Who profits off of the building of those "mansions" Not the workers!

  • @busybuzzbuzz sit and listen to Peter Schiff, that's all I can say. He would put clowns like this to shame when discussing the free markets vs. communisim and socialism. They have bought and sold you on this belief of "equality" and "workers rights". Therefore you have to rely on the government to protect you from all these "evil" people in the free markets so they don't take advantage of you...I know the rhetoric. Somehow the government are angels that are gonna create utopia. HAHAHA

  • @busybuzzbuzz and where can I find his debates with a capitalist? If he doesn't have many debates than how can I know he has a backbone to his claims otherwise he is just spewing nonsense? Also, has he ever worked in the private sector, has he ever ran a business, met a payroll? Austrian economists (Mises Institute) would tear this guy to shreds in a debate. His beliefs are all warm and fuzy, but they're just not pragmatic towards real world applications.

  • @tonyg0123 Actually, there’s a shed-load of explanation spread across a series of interviews with Mr Harvey; either you’re not listening or you just don’t want to hear what he’s saying. Given that he is being so perspicacious I’d say the latter.

  • @clean3 perspicacious? Because he is convincing you with his wisdom beard and glasses? He is an ideologue who pushes radical views on vulnerable, rebellious students. He is a guy who would be all for eugenics and eliminating large masses in the name of "protecting the earth" if he only had power. Careful with these intellectuals who think they can orchestrate the perfect society...history has taught us alot. It's not about capitalism vs. communism to these people, it's about seeking power

  • rich play poor die

  • Who built the mansions he is talking about. When you have 0 growth what is the point of doing anything if you are just going to take from the rich. If the state is going to redistribute the wealth. Where will the new ideas come from what will be the incentive be to push your self. If we have no monetary gain what will be the driving force. Where will these angels come from that will set up this society come from as Milton Friedman said.

  • what a clear guy this chap is, how does he manage not to lose his temper with this evil woman? well done dave

  • She is one dumb interviewer. He is a graceful intellect.

  • She's an awful interviewer.

  • This guy is so naive.

  • @A1373S9865 Wow what an insightful comment. Very perceptive and in-depth, your one line analysis.

  • Sorry.... There are just so many straw men that Harvey raises that I didn't want to spend the time to write:

E.g. "Capitalism is about 3% compound growth" Then he talks about the world markets. That is a straw man. A. Smith's capitalism cannot work with Keynesian economics. 1 trillion- 3 trillion are inflationary figures. They do not reflect real wealth (Smith wrote about wealth, not dollars).

Life expectancy under Mao increased? 30-50 million people died because of his great leap forward.

  • To look to Mao as an example of someone who promoted life is AT BEST naive.

The problem with both Capitalism and Communism is that people are selfish and cruel. Smith knew this. Capitalism is BASED on the idea that people are selfish (I want the best for the lowest price and sell at the highest). Communism assumes that people can be unselfish. If people weren't selfish, Communism would be great. But that is not realistic. That is why I believe he is naive.

  • @A1373S9865 Here's another problem with these academic types. They all have generally low stress interesting jobs surrounded by energetic young people (often attractive young females). This is not reality. 80 % of the population say they HATE their jobs. That being the case, it has been my regrettable conclusion that no one is going to get up at 7:30 Monday morning and trudge off to their soul destroying job unless there is a 12 gauge shotgun pointed at their head. Be it rent or food.

  • @A1373S9865 <--- This commenter is such an idiot.

  • The 'Leisure Time' comment by the journalist just made me laugh. Living in Hungary which had a socailist/communist society until 1989 and looking at the differences in working hours is very educational. Before 1989 everybody put their pen down at 4.30pm and went home. They had state supported holiday homes in the best locations where they could go for peanuts. Now, they work til midnight, slave away for a multinational boss and are thankful if they get 20 minutes for lunch

  • and once again reporters prove they are w#ores

  • bioches dont know about adam smith!

  • this woman is an idiot.

  • I'd like to be reserved in my criticism but honestly this woman is just behaving like a belligerent retard.

  • reporters are just asskissers like this lady.

  • Received wisdom presents the mantra that Capitalism is the way the world works. But even if you except this canard history shows that it is not necessarily the way the world works. Its simply a historical phenomenon, a particular form of political economy.

  • WALL STREET BANKERS are not concerned about people they think themselves as if they are gods, thats why they want war.

  • @iisadoraf If bankers want a war then LET'S GIVE THEM A WAR!

  • @BenNCM Hell yeah lets ban together and charge these ass holes.

  • this woman is so annoying and seems very uneducated in the way she is asking questions ...our leisure time has increased are you sure about that. 9-5 everyday doing what WORKING RIGHT

  • @beautybrush Its not the women its the dumb argumentative format of this show.

  • @beautybrush why work 5 on 2 off? I work 2 on and 5 studying reality with the technology(Science) capitalism helped bring about yet sadly holds back progress rewarding consumption, planned obsolescence.

Anyway the main reason I left a comment was to say that yes the woman presenter was asking stupid questions but the quality of answers she received should generate some very needed conversations among the public. Next question is will the conversions contain any reasoned arguments for change?

  • @beautybrush Yeah, I couldn't agree more. Its such a shame that they put people such as her in these interviews to herald these dumbed-down critiques of marxism and socialism... I was arguing these things when I was 15 before I actually decided to pick up a book and read the actual truth of these things. It's also funny how 80% of our "Leisure time" is spent shopping. Funny how these facts are manipulated to suit their arguments of increased happiness and well-being.

We actually spend 70% of our "Leisure time" shopping for general necessities eg food. Funny how these facts are manipulated to suit their arguments of increased happiness and well-being.

  • @beautybrush

The woman is getting kind of annoying, as Beautybrush said, the woman does seem a bit uneducated when it comes to marxism, and what she didn't know is that the Soviet Union was a facade. She's intentionally making things more difficult for David Harvey.."Paint the picture" Are you joking? seriously, you think anyone can construct an idea of a society that quick? Seriously, she's should allow him to express his ideas rather than staggering it.

  • @beautybrush Well, leisure time has increase compared to the dawn of the industrial revolution. Perhaps you could say leisure time has increased since 1900, (I don't even know about that) but it has decreased since the seventies, and periods in the past had much greater leisure time than now. She didn't specify NOW as compared to WHEN. She just said its increased. Well great, increased compared to what? It has both increased and decreased depending on what you're comparing it to.

  • @beautybrush Ha, that is what I was thinking, more leisure time my ass!

  • @beautybrush ~Do you think you can do her job?if not shut the fuck up!

  • @beautybrush Technology, is the reason we have so much liesure time. Do you call 15% unemployment, working?

  • @beautybrush Agreed. She seems really dumb and as if she's not listening to him at all, but just keeps asking the same questions.

  • @beautybrush

She's a complete lightweight. I stopped listening to the BBC Radio 4 Today programme because I found her unbearable. But then, she's the kind of airhead the powers that be want in the media.
