  • I never knew Keith sang bluegrass.

  • "Music" today is a shame. It takes no talent to be famous. I thank GOD every day for the music made before my time. LONG LIVE RALPH STANLEY!!

  • please pass this music on and on and on, Do not let this music die

  • They need to release this show on dvd now, what a performance!!!

  • The fiddler is Classic

  • @46r11 Keith Whitley.

  • when did he move to the new south?

  • going to see ricky skaggs at watseka theatre watseka illinois on aug 26

  • Who would have thought the old man would outlive all these other guys?

  • love me some ralph stanley!! coming from a rap lover twista tech n9ne!!!!! Gotta stay with the roots.......LOVE MY BLUEGRASS BABY GO RALPH AND BILL MONROE

  • Isn't this the same tune that Ralph Stanley sings Midnight Train too? I've never heard these lyrics. It's good.

  • Now that's a mean banjo!

  • i don't know why lorrie morgan fell in love w/ keith--ralph stanley is hot!!

  • It thrills me to death to hear a lot of new people just discovereing these old boys. The music is pure and beautiful in its ages old origins and these people sing it with a reverence for the tradition that is just near sacred and the intensity of their singing and pure spookiness of their harmony makes it unique in its beauty. Thank you so much for seeing the value in it. Really, thanks.

  • It looks like 3 people are deaf and for damn sure can't here the Choo Choo Comin!!!!

  • It looks like 3 people are deaf and for damn sure can't here the Choo Choo Comin!!!!

  • this song made my day thums up

  • what kind of a dumbass wouldn't like this?? i see three dislikes..ain't that pure fuckin hell..

  • Didn't the fella on fiddle play the brother-in-law in the Rocky movies?

  • @KeithWhitleyFan I cannot thank you enough for posting this footage. Not to mention a chance to see/hear Ralph Stanley, but you also introduced me to this fiddler (curly ray) and then, some guy I never paid any real attention to before --I'm talking about Keith Whitley -- he seriously bowled me over. I have never heard a male singer like this before. Tears were streaming down at about 1:30. And I'm not prone to that kinda stuff, either. This music goes deep, OK? DEEP !

  • I love to listen to Keith Whitley but I had no idea that he sang Bluegrass. This is good stuff.

  • @TheJaybo1975 It's a shame he passed away too soon.

  • i hear a choo choo coming

  • Now that is a damn lineup right there boys.....

  • o my. i could hear this a 1,000,000 times and it wouldn't get old

  • hahah carter died because of a heart attack you retard. hahah and im 16 years old

  • @klanman34 dumbass we were discussing keith, not carter..fyi carters liver ruptured too much alcohol..he was performing in hazel green ky., ralph tells about it in his book..and no he did not die of a heart attack..how stupid..

  • @meanlezbo both of them died from complications of consumption. let's not focus on the way they died but the way they lived.

  • what a talent keith was, too bad he oded on moonshine

  • Keith was a great bluegrass singer but an even better country singer, one of the best ever in my humble opinion.

  • Bluegrass at its BEST!!!

  • I was just listening to early Stanley Bros. recordings and have to agree that Carter's voice, tone, timing and feel can't be beat! Kieth was sure good though!

  • No argument that Keith was great singer. But "greatest ever"? No one can touch Carter Stanley for this style of music.

  • I gotta say the fiddle player is a character...

  • the thumbs down was an accident, I probably have the worst mouse in America) I actually enjoyed your comment, Curly Ray is the fiddle player and there Aint never gonna be another like him

  • My family is from SW VA and eastern KY - and I can just feel it from Dr. Stanley.

  • It just doesn't get any better... AWESOME!!!!!

  • 5 stars

  • I've met these guys doing sound for them and as a musician am an absolute lover of Dr. Ralph and Curly Ray but I had forgotten how great Keith was.

  • Glad to see someone else asking for cleaner language here. It gets too much for me to allow my granddaughters to watch. It's a shame because I want to share the old timey music that I listened to.

  • Hail the Colonel.....!

    Keith Whitley...

  • I agree. But I love Roy Lee Centers.

Does anybody have a video of him?

  • Larry Sparks and Keith Whitney are the best. Larry Sparks is a Buckeye from the great state of Ohio.

  • It all has to do with what you like.. I like RALPH!!! Its the heart behind the music that makes him the GREATEST in my eyes :)

  • Kieth should have stayed with Ralph, he may be alive today

  • Seeing Keith brings threat of tears...I really miss that guy. Country would be a hell of lot better off if he was still with us

You are a serious bad ass Whitley!

  • Well, you guys are close, BUT>> THE greatest singer to ever live or get behind a mic was standing NEXT to Kieth.. he is wearing the burgundy suit.. you know, RALPH.. IF it weren't for Ralph & Carter, you guys wouldn't have ever even heard of Kieth, PLUS Ralph helped Kieth grow his talent immensely...The reason Kieth was so good was because of the same reason that Ernie, Roy Lee, or any of the others were. RALPH showed them how to sing.....

  • @bbanjoboy Ralph..isn't the GREATEST singer maybe one of the greatest TENOR SINGER's...And Roy Lee had his band ( The Lee Brothers) before Carter died...They even met...After Carter died..Ralph brought in Carter's son...LARRY SPARKS....That's right..ask anybody..Larry is Carter's illegitimate son...

  • He sure as hell looks like Carter !!! Always thought Ralph ll looked more like Keith than he did Ralph too.... ????

  • @kiphemingway Look at Ralph II"s baby picture's..He looks more like Carter..REAL WIDE BETWEEN THE EYES!...

  • I am 21 and people associate rap with my generation and i say bullshit i hate it i would much rather listen to ralph stanley and the clinch mountain boys anyday

  • @jbark61

  • @jbark61 I agree strongly. All you can do is spread this music to the people. help them to remember where music came from. Give Tony Rice a try....personal favorite.

  • Probably somebody who wishes you would use respectful language. Ralph doesn't take well to that kind of coarse behavior. Clean it up for this page, and take your foul language over to a more appropriate place. This is not the context.

  • Comment removed

  • Not exactly. There's a time and a place for cussin' sir. Around Ralph is not the time nor the place. You know what I mean.

  • dogsee1, PLEASE watch how you talk on here. There are Kids who come on here. Unless you are one. Than matbe your mom or dad will come on here. I am just asking.

  • greatest bluegrass singer that ever lived. period. It doesn't get better than this. We watch these Stanley-era Keith vids at least a few times a week. Thanks so much for posting them! This is MUSIC!

  • I have loved he Stanley Bros. for a LONG time. It's so good to see a video with Curly Ray Cline in there!! Keith was such an amazing and fabulous and tragic fella. Wonderful post and thank you so much.

  • Kieth is great, but don't forget he has two other great voices behind him on the chorus - Ralph Stanley's tenor and Jack Cook's baritone.

  • Curly Ray was the best of his kind...and on the stage with two livin legends! That bluegrass right there folks!

  • Thank you for posting this, It's a shame Keith Whitley's life was cut short. He was one of my favorites.

  • Awesome stuff! Thanks for posting this. I've given it 5 stars and added it to my favorites. Doesn't get any better than Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys!

  • HOLY SHIT!!!!! I've always enjoyed bluegrass... saw Dr. Ralph and his Clinch Mountain Boys live... one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

I've grown to really like Keith Whitley over the past 5yrs or so.

I had NO idea he was with them back in the day.

His voice is so pure in that first solo, it gave me goosebumps, and I didn't even realize who it was...

  • am I being too hard here or ..does most contemporary music sound stale and pale and old and grey compared to them old musicians here? this is still true handmade ART, ladies n´gennilminn ! no posing, but yes: great entertainment on top of good playing ! GIVE ME THIS OR GIVE ME NUTHIN´!!

  • Good Stuff!

  • an era in music is about over.. Ralph Stanley..

Willie Nelson.. Merle Haggard.. George Jones..

    clock is ticking on them..

not many of the roots giants left.

  • keith just makes me melt!

  • Whose the wild man on the fiddle? I just finised building one and now I am going to try to learn how pick it.

  • The fiddle player is Curly Ray Cline...

  • Thtas Curly ray cline. If your gonna learn, take it from a fellow fiddler, no ones better to learn off of than Curly.

  • Curly Ray is the man. Alot of his stuff is only available on cassette. I've got autographed copies of "Boar Hog" and "Smarter than the average idiot" from when I was a little bitty kid. He was a real entertainer.

  • i've been wanting to buy some of his stuff...but you can't find it in stores

  • Curly was the greatest live! He always put on a great show. A true talent. R.I.P CRC!

  • It never fails to amaze me how many GREAT Musical Artists the Bluegrass State has produced! SKEETER DAVIS, KEITH WHITLEY,LORETTA LYNN, CRYSTAL GAYLE, TOM T. HALL, THE EVERLY BROTHERS,RALPH STANLEY, RICKY SKAGGS, and PATTY LOVELESS..just to name a few !!!

  • well ralph aint from the bluegrass state my friend.

  • Thanks for letting me know that. he played throughout Kentucky for years and playing Bluegrass as he did so well I just figured he was from Kentucky. Where is he from ? West Virginia ? Certainly not New Mexico ! LOL!

  • He's from Virginia

  • Clinch Mountains might be a hint

  • Yeah and Ray Benson from Asleep At The Wheel ain't from Texas either. Some of the best "country" music ever made was from folks from California. Don't matter where you are born as long as you have the talent.

  • AMAZING!!! I play professional Bluegrass and Heart & Soul is what it's all about! Ralph, Keith, Curly, Renfro, Jack, You guys are my musical heroes!

  • WOW! That's better than the ol' opry. I miss this stuff.

  • When they were in these peak years I never saw another bluegrass band that could electrify a crowd the way they did.

  • Thats as good as it gets right there people. Pure simple hard driving bluegrass done Stanley style !!!!!!!!

  • What is the name of this song?

  • "I Hear A Choo-Choo Comin"

  • @KeithWhitleyFan you think yer real smart don't ya big boy..i have forgot more about grass than you ever learned, and challenge you to a feud..bring it on son..whitley and carter were such a WASTE dieing so young because of ALCOHOL...

  • @dogsee1 haha carter died of a heart attack. im 16 years old and know that.

  • @fredt32 that is choo choo dumbass, have you been in a cave..

  • ralph's the best try to earl or jd crowe play like that no way

  • excellent, Keith left us much to early

  • Whats with you people? I post compliments to Ralph Stanley and this video and everyone sends me hate mail. Everyone gives me a thumbs down. Bunch of morons.

  • Brilliant, Dr. Ralph knew what a diamond he had with Keith!

  • AMAZING!!!That was AWESOME

  • Man can Ralph make that banjer ring in the beginning

  • Fantastic!

  • Whats the name of the fiddle player?

  • Curly Ray Cline. The one and only.

  • Fantastic!

  • Stanley's picking has just as much drive as Earl's does. Keep picking.

  • That's the understatement of the century! NOTHING can touch Ralph's drive!!!

  • I play banjo because of ralph, NOT because of earl, as with most. However, Ralph has the same drive because he honestly plays 20% less notes than Earl. Not a knock on ralph, as I feel sometimes less is more. I want to hear the song with the banjo rolls around the song, not the song arond the banjo rolls as Earl played.

  • Thats exactly what I meant.

  • I'll echo a few of the other comments here, Curly Ray Cline freakin' rules! That's what Bluegrass fiddlin' is all about! The best there ever was!

  • does anyone know where to find this video?

  • curley ray cline was the best fiddler I ever

    heard

  • you better believe it! thats why i model all my playing after his style.

  • What with close harmony and fast playing. Awesome. Dense.

  • these boys tear it up!

  • This is great! Thank you so much for posting. I love Keith Whitley and especially his early bluegrass music. He is the greatest singer ever!

  • Bad ass suits! Saw them at The Ralph Stanley Museum in Clintwood,VA.

  • great stuff thanks for the music

  • This is Ralph in his young prime.

He could really rear it up on the banjo.

  • Yeah I know Ididnt see the whole thing. This is cool I looooooooooooove bluegrass

  • Quite amazing !

  • Love it! Is that Ricky Lee on Lead Guitar?

  • That's Renfro Proffit on the lead guitar.

  • can you get this live show on vhs or dvd

  • Is Ralph the one on the Skin Box? Im just wonderin cause I aint never seen a young Ralph Stanley, cepton an early 1950's record cover, I couldnt tell though. GREAT BLUEGRASS! KICK AS GUITR AND BANJO! YEEEEEEEEEEHAW!

  • The only thing that could make this better is Ricky Skaggs on mandolin!!

  • thats grass!!!!!

  • mmmmmm,mmmmmmm,mmmmmmmm--that's good cookin'!

  • Isn't that Curly Ray Cline on fiddle?

  • Thats THE WORLD FAMOUS Curly Ray Cline, he and the "Fiddlin Art Stamper" were in a class by themselves!

  • Yeah. I really enjoy his playing on the Keith Whitley & Ricky Skaggs "Second Generation" CD.

  • Curley Ray beat my Grandpa out of playing with Ralph, My mother has told me stories of Ralph and Carter coming to their house to play.

  • I Hear A Choo Choo Comin', great version. Thanks for uploading this gem!

  • Yes, indeedie! The finest singer that ever stood behind a microphone! Did you see him pick some? Didn't even break out into a sweat. Just a youngster at 23.
