Great things come in small packages.Audie Murphy died the day I graduated from Basic Training. It was later that I saw "To Hell and Back",and the Navy and Marines did not want him?Now he belongs to every branch of service.God rest him!
Audie Murphy showed what a foot soldier can do when the weapon is kept clean and in working order, regardless of physical stature. My baby-faced, shorter and older brother won valor decorations serving as a dog-face with the 2nd infantry division in Korea.
5 feet nothing, maybe 145 LBS and the Army would not enlist him at first due to his stature , health, size and so on. I guess one of those special people when everything around you is really, really bad and you look over and say " Murphy is here, we will be alright".
The picture at 0:40 is the best. Even after he made stardom in films later he was so modest and humble of his exploits during the war and rarely liked talking about them.
@Audiesdaddy Your more than welcome. Thank YOU for this great video. Recently retired 30 year Navy Aviation Vet. I am still amazed at the people I have known in my service (and am close with still) who, by looking at them would never seem to accomplish anything... yet were larger than life when things were really BAD. Audie L. Murphy was one of those human beings. The "tough talking" guys always were bailed out by men like this.
Who cares if he was the MOST decorated, This was a true American who in life and his movies gave my generation a standard to live up to, not like today's lot with there drinking, drugs, arrogance and more marriages than change of shirts. We need a zillion AUDIE MURPHYS
@1989809 oh come on be fair, this generation is a good one. i served with the best men this nation has ever known who have never done drugs, drink or get married. i could make several critisisms of your generation but that wouldent be fair, every generation has there problems. please be less onesided
Please know that my attempt here is NOT to denigrate the military achievements of Colonel Urban or to insult his family. There's no doubt that in having the Medal of Honor, Colonel Urban was a hero, and, indeed, America should remember all her heroes and the price they paid. There are so many recipients more decorated and higher decorated than Colonel Urban.
Audie Murphy is quantitatively and qualitatively more highly decorated than Colonel Matt Urban, who has 29 awards; his service medals and their appropriate devices are NOT for bravery. Audie Murphy has 34 awards, including the Distinguished Service Cross, our Nation's second highest medal for valor, which Colonel Urban lacks.
Thanks for this heartwarming video. He was a great man indeed , Read his WWII book, shocked me.
I am glad that he was one of many to help free my country from the NAZIS, but we should try remembering him also as the man that he was (not solely the soldier) please !
Thanks for such a great job honoring a true American hero. I was a soldier in the 3rd Inf Div, stationed in Wuerzburg Germany from Sept 1961 to March 1964. I had the pleasure of seeing Audie in May 1963 when he visited the division on the day honoring its formation 1n 1917. Im so sorry I didnt get to actually meet him. Of all the graves I saw in Arlington upon a visit there, his was the first on my list. Thanks again and Ill gladly sign the petition.
This man is a true Great American who went more than the distance to help preserve our Freedoms that we enjoy in the United States today !!! He should be awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom by acclamation !!!
Dave, Nothing is more telling about a country and it's citizens than how they choose to Honor their heros. Of all that have been nominated or chosen, none is more deserving than Audie L. Murphy. I have already signed your petition, # 89, and have sent an e-mail with the link asking my friends and family to sign also.
This is a great video, job well done, I think Audie would be very honored and proud. I think the Pres.MOF honors his
character and his deeds, both military and civilian.
Very nice video. I had to watch it a couple of times before I could get through it without crying. I love "Little Texas." They don't make guys like him anymore.
