And it's difficult for them to put a captive animal in the wild because they don't know how to hunt. They're fed. And they travel in pods (herds), not alone, so they'd need a pod for it to join.
The orca from Free Willy, Keiko, lived in the ocean, but in a huge netted area. He didn't know how to live with the wild orcas.
It would die. The whale from "Free Willie" died too though they spend millions of dollars to prepare it for returning to the wild. You just cannot set free such a large animal that grew up in human care.

What bothers me about this story is that *everyone* is mis-interpreting the name, and they aren't considering that the whale is *captive*. This was a tragic accident and I feel really sad for the trainer who probably did her best to take care of the orcas. Tilly has been captured in Iceland when he was two years old and has been treated poorly since then. Poor whale. They are much too intelligent to be kept locked up in little tanks and made to perform tricks for peoples selfish amusement. Its no wonder he killed, he must be incredibly frustrated living that kind of life.
You cant put him out in the wild, they live in family pods, and if he was dumped in the ocean, then he'd be all alone without family for the needed social interaction. Its people who put him in this situation, so they should take responsibility and care for him appropriately.

If you go to the blog entry that this is based on, though, it's pretty clear that the main point was that Sea World should be held responsible because this is not the first time Tilly has killed a human. They also want Tilly euthanized (which I don't agree with), but are not advocating stoning him.

@BornConfusing People may refer to it as a "Killer Whale" but it's an Orca. The name "Killer Whale" started basically because of the 1970s movie "Orca, the Killer Whale". And it's difficult for them to put a captive animal in the wild because they don't know how to hunt. They're fed. And they travel in pods (herds), not alone, so they'd need a pod for it to join.
The orca from Free Willy, Keiko, lived in the ocean, but in a huge netted area. He didn't know how to live with the wild orcas.

too true, no matter how much you think you know about an animal's behavior and its personality, it doesn't change the fact that it is a wild animal with evolved instincts that can reawaken. The tragedy in all this is that the trainer was probably someone with the best intentions and love for killer whales, but nature cannot be overriden, and these animals in the wild would have so much mental stimulation, kept in a fish bowl just made it snap, its not his fault even if it was intentional

The name killer whale comes from when the Basque called them whale killers and that was because killer whales do indeed sometimes prey on creatures they're own size like sharks and even fellow dolpins. Second thing, Killer whale is spanish. When it was translated into English, they forgot to switch the adjective and the noun. The original name is whale killer, because the fishermen observed that orcas kill young whales, and they do. Another thing? An orca is a dolphin. Not a whale, their common name is completely unrelated and makes much confusion.

This was a tragic accident and I feel really sad for the trainer who probably did her best to take care of the orcas. Tilly has been captured in Iceland when he was two years old and has been treated poorly since then. An orca is a magnificent animal who belong in the wild and should not be held in captivity for or own pleasure, that's criminal.

So far the theory was on the whole issue was she had her hair loose in a pony tail and they think he thought it was a toy there was no malice in the animal.
