Sublime! Unique and unsurpassed – the mixing of cultures often produces the most surprising results: German musicians playing an Afro-American form of popular music and singing English English (rather than American English). The playing is amazing!
Wow! Great vocals, funky bass and clavinet, harmony lead guitar lines, steamy organ solo, hot backup singers shakin' their booties- all set in a boxing ring! This is quality entertainment folks. No lip synching goin' on here.
it's quite a long time ago, that I've been looking to Orangefunk's post of RPs Vid. Let me thank you for all your kind comment to RP. I've got some good news, I formed "RANDY PIE Reloaded" and we're having our very first concert at March 25th in Hamburg at the "Downtown Bluesclub". One teardrop in the news, I'm the only original RP in this band, but I guess as the lead singer, guitarist and author of most of RPs songs, I'm in a way allowed to do so. :o)
I just got back from Oldenburg actually... was talking with some older guys from Munich about the old days... you could see a warm feeling come over them when I mentioned all the old bands...
Hi Bernd! Really cool to meet you here!!! That's really great news regarding "RP Reloaded"!!! All the best of luck for your comeback and, which is the most important, enjoy it! Hope you're gonna visit Switzerland soon with your new crew, "moods(dot)ch" would be the perfect location as one of the funkiest places in Zurich.
Das war ne echt coole funkig-rockige Musik, die in die Beine ging. Besten Dank dafür! Rock on.
sorry to bother you with so many messages :), but could you tell us what the occasion for this vid was? where's this boxing ring and what's the crowd doing there? did you just record this one video clip or did you play a whole concert there?
Hi, first of all thanks for your kind interest in RPr. I don't mind answer your questions. :o)
RPR Website is still under construction. I hope it'll be ready for the net soon. This vid is a take from a 1h live show, recorded for WDR in Cologne. The WDR Producers had the idea of letting us perform in this boxing ring sourrounded by the audience. Strange in a way, but it was great fun though. There is a big chance that I might get the rest of the program!!!! CU
Has this been realeased in any digital form? Where can I buy the studio recording of this song? I got to have this one in my collection. Wich LP was it on? Where can I buy the LP? All my searches have turned up blank...
This song's on Randie Pie's "Kitsch"-Album. Bought the CD a few weeks ago on german eBay (2 on 1 offer, "RANDY PIE-same + KITSCH"). Kitsch is similar to "Highway Driver" but even a bit better, in my opinion.
I used to have "Kitsch" many years back and was searching for it online when I found this video. Great music! And I found a mint copy on eBay and won the bid at $22.99 :-)
Great to be able to say 'thanks' directly to the performers. Saw RP at UCW Aberystwyth (Wales) and you had the place bouncing by about the third bar of the first song... quite something as the locals usually need a lot of drink first before they really bop!
Thanks Neil for posting this!!! It's really funny seeing me and my old pals 30 years later on IT :o)) In a way I feel honoured when after all these Years people like what we've done and get notice of the great musicanship my colleagues had and still have.
Bernd - Kevin Keegan :o))) - who, I guess, played in Hamburg these Years.
Thanks Bernd! Thanks for reminding me to do what I should have done months ago. Will be in the post tomorrow!
Just so everyone knows, Bernd is the lead singer playing left handed guitar.... and yes Kevin Keegan was at Hamburg around 1977/78 so he has a lot to aqnswer for ;-)
Just a thought... any chance of a reunion tour in the UK? You were a great unit. Hope everyone from RP is still in good health. It bothers me that about 25% of my blues/rock/ funk heroes were dead by the age of 40! Life on the road eh?
I really don't know is there is a glimpse of a chance to have a RP reunion, if there's one berfore we passed the age of 70 we'd be glad to tour the UK. I remember Aberystwyth but don't know if we were there on our 1. or second tour. Anyway a very good audience! By the way, all RP members are healthy and in good shape. :o))
Great that you remember audiences and are all in good health. I bought your 'latest album' - then 'Highway Driver' (1974) - which dates the tour for you. For those who don't know the album sleeve, it epitomises 'Randy Pie' and 'Highway Driver' ideas very well. I know the place mentioned and will find out about 'A F Dutton' who was the 'highway driver' whom 'randy pie' is waiting for at the roadhouse! Was that woman in RP? Phew.. how the female vocalists singers swung there bottoms!
there's nothing wrong about it, mate. who determines what's right and what's wrong? no one! this band is just killing! and not only in this (i dare to describe it likt that) funky rock'n'roll/krautrock track.
BIG BIG UP to orangefunk for spreading such funky stuff around the world!!

btw Randy Pie are:
drums: Dicky Tarrach
leadsinger and guitarist: Bernd Wippich
bass: Manfred Thiers
sax (fleet, guitar, vocals): Jochen Petersen
keys: Werner Becker (the guy in the black t-shirt with black hair)
keys2 (sometimes sax): frenchman Jean-Jacques Kravetz (the guy who plays the funky e-organ solo; earlier: Frumpy )
FunkyDuke777 3 years ago
Frank Diez (Gitarre) and Peter French (Vocals) came in 1977 to replace Bernd and Werner who left the band.
