I think one reason to why I like bullet hell more than regular shooters is that althouth they are hard they don't feel cheap. In many other type's of shooters it often feels like the game throws one cheap-shot after another at you.

In Bullet Hell games, the vulnerable part of your ship is actually many times smaller than your ship's sprite. This also applies to a lot of non-bullet hell shmups.

Or in other words, it wouldn't matter if half the sprite of the player ship would get caught in a giant laser, as long as that blue dot stays untouched, the ship is fine. Does that answer your question?
