  • greatpost love strauss the king of waltz music with his flowing notes.so dif from each composer but they all are dif with signature sounds. so its my ears that hear this and my soul that feels it.not bias i love most clasical music. its so out of this world all i see is infinity when it goes threw me like a hot knife threw butter.so i always think even the oldest composer still tryed to be orginal.even if some say they have no difs. if you listen close they are so dif .from one to next.,peace

  • The 3 tugs totals is almost double the horsepower of the ship.

  • its a tractor tug w/ twin z-drives, google it. the 3 tugs are at most 5-6000hp each, the ship is at least 50k hp, but they move it with mechanical advantage and controlled momentum. the first guy looks to be in ballast, id guage he's around 50k LT, and the water there is only 40ft deep, so he wont load all the way either. pay more attention to the water, this is where all your crap comes from.

  • thats a voith schneider drive, you wont find many of those around the US, just a handful of tugs and the staten island ferries in NYC. extremely maneuverable, but you dont get as much torque ("bollard pull" in tug speak) from them, and they're not good for towing things long distance. many companies like to always be able to tow, so the stern mounted z-drives provides the flexibility for both maneuverable ship assist and towing.

  • The propellers are in the bow and that allows us to spin the boat in place very quickly. I was probably operating that tug that day.

  • Hi dude! Congrats on the movie. They propably have to spin due to present current (easier to land/berth with head current) or to facilitate offloading. most tanker have offloading gear on the port (left) side.

    it´d be nice to have the ship-tugs communication. u´d enjoy it.try vhf channel 9 to monitor pilots coordination with tugs. they initially call tugs on a general channel then switch to the work channel. it´s kind of tricky but possible.

    Tankers manifold can connect to shore hoses on both port and starboard side. At least when I was at sea tugs were called on the International channel 16 then shift to working channel, probably still the same today.

  • Would be interesting to see if any members have anything on ULCCs berthing at a CBM (Conventional Buoy Mooring) like in Jebel Dhanna in the 80s.

  • Did that at Jebel Dhanna 1970's and Das Island on the smaller tankers, before Video cameras though I had a Cine Camera though not intrinsically safe and Captain wouldnt let me film. That would have beena good archive.

  • And lastly the reason for spinning the ships is so they are pointing into the current as it docks. While it may look like the ships are not moving some times infact they may be moving through the water at up to 2knots to fight the current. I hope some of you find this info interesting.

  • The other ship, "Washington Voyager" is much smaller and has a bowthruster. It is very maneuverable, we often take that class of ship into and out of smaller docks with no tugs. But the company requires us to use tugs at that dock. Also it is not true that the tugs do all the work durring docking. The ship is often using its engine and rudder to help, the results are just alot slowere than what the tugs can do. Often the tugs have almost the same amout of horse power as the ship.

  • I work for the company which owns those ships and have sailled on the second one shown. I think it is great that people watch and find interesting what we do. I wanted to clear up a few things. The first ship shown the "Cygnus Voyager" is one of the largest ships that goes to that dock. It has no bowthruster and is not very maneuverable, hence the three tugs.

  • I am a Merchant sailor.... wasnt aware this stuff was interesting to anyone on shore.... figured we were largely ignored

  • Been a big boat watcher for many years, tugs are really fun to watch, but all are great. Spent much time on the SanFrancisco Bay sailing smaller boats, so learned to stay out of the big guys's way. Was assisted once by a kind tug operator when my 18ft multihull when over behind Treasure Island (in the wind shadow). I LOVE views from the water now that I'm older and less able to get out there.

  • yup. In operations such is that, the tugboat or a team of tugboats moves the ship. the ship is jus idle'in. Although most ships are equipped with bow thrusters to manuever in tight spots,in certain areas and ports, Tugboats are used mainly for manuevering a ship in spots it could only dream of manueving in under it's own power
