  • Catepillar sheds it's skin to find a butterfly within. This is a condition in life, if achieved is extremely pleasing to the individual. after 60 years of crawling around like a worm, i finally achieved a butterfly like state of self sustaining existence, . The freedom, to flit about as i please for the next 20 years is pleasing indeed.

  • Hell yeah! Did I just say that? yes I did!

  • JUST MISSED!!! "There Is A Mountain" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 9 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1967...

  • I believe Donovan wrote that song about the on again, off again, on again KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountian Music Festival that was at the Mt. Tamalpias outdoor theater 6-2-67, a week or so before Monterrey Pop Festival. The Jefferson Airplane, The Doors and the Byrds were the headliners. I think Donovan may have played there too. Tickets for both days were like five bucks. !5,000 people were bussed up the mt on *trans-love busses*

  • This is my most fun song right now. I like mountains. :D

  • Reminds me a little bit of Goin' Up the Country by Canned Heat. Or is it the other way around :)

  • @alworkedup ...the flute?

  • Cool song :)

  • The music of this era had meaning. This song is wonderful~ Donovan is a poet genius and his music is 'timeless'.

  • i just love these songs. thumbs up if you love them too

  • @s6y9l- its garden gates not garden gaze

  • Ahhhhhhh the 70's were did it all go wrong !!!!!!

  • @Tomsouthrock This was 1967. I think the late '70s is when I think it went wrong with guitarists playing fast meaningless guitar solos and people just wanting the money and not caring about the music.

  • @slpplexi1969 This true its just all to bad it could have been so good

  • Donovan was born on May 10, 1946 and is now 65 years old. He is going to be a 2012 inductee into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

  • @MrRonnieG .....Yeeeeaaahhhhh!!! Donovan is going be a 2012 inductee for the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame? About time...

  • I think he was definitely as high as a kite

  • @jorypants umm . . . maybe . . . and maybe not . . . but what does it matter. The man was simply connected deeply with his muse.

  • first there is a moorhen then there is no moorhen then there is.

  • :-) I am still confused! But I used to sing this song when I was a kid in South Africa.

  • what is zen koan ?????"?

  • Love it~~~~~~~~~

  • ...and the inspiration for the Allman Bros. "Mountain Jam"...

  • As soon as I started playing this my cat looked up at me with a WTF expression. He then proceeded to high five me.

  • Look upon my garden, gaze, a snail that's what it is....

  • Thanks for mentioning the Allman Brothers. Their "Mountain Jam" is one of my favorite guitar pieces.

  • @0917gva : thanks for sending this one Gayle, it's one of my faves by Donovan ! Gary x

  • All I have is an Olive Garden :(

  • climbing the mountain

    tough climb

    and by reaching the top

    the mountain is no longer

  • This song is not "confusing". The statement "First there is a mountain. Then there is no mountain. Then there is." is simply a Zen koan.

  • @DrSimian LOL, thanks for the explanation. I always wondered about that...Lanny (Nocaro)

  • @Nocaro It refers to seeing the total image at first, then seeing individual elements of it, in which our idea of the original image has been "lost," then being able to combine it all back into the total image again, only this time knowing what's ALL there. The converse would be the line from Mike Nesmith's Different Drum: "You can't see the forest for the trees."

  • @DrSimian like being in the mountains and the fog takes away, then reveals. Yes, very Zen.

  • @DrSimian right to thepoint!

  • @DrSimian You are right, its not confusing, its not Zen koan either. He's watching a snail crawl across the pointed tops of his picket garden gate. Snail goes up the "mountain", coming down there's no "mountain", goes up the next picket (mountain). Its that simple.

  • @duff558 ...best explanation I've heard in 40 years...gracias...

  • @duff558 Sorry but I disagree with you. Donavan is referring to a caterpillar's movement in general, and not to the snail crawling across the pointed tops of a picket garden fence, as you stated. If you have ever observed a caterpillar in motion, you will notice that its body will scrunch up and create a "mountain". Then, it flattens itself out in order to move, and the "mountain" goes away... "FIRST there is a MOUNTAIN, THEN there is NO MOUNTAIN, then there IS"

  • @DrSimian yes the song is a series of Koan haiku

  • Actually this song is very profound.

  • LOVE this song!! dancing in my chair at work :)

  • great musican !!!

  • he had a garden of snail and I have a garden of weeds.

  • this is first I see his picture.I never saw him but liked the song.He kinda cute.
