When I walk by skunks (many live in the area and when walking at night you are liable to encounter several) I talk to them and vocalize to make my presence known so I don't surprise them. If you don't surprise them and don't creep towards them like a predator, they can be very friendly and cute. I've had a wild skunk approach me and let me pet it-- ever since then, my opinion of skunks is overwhelmingly positive.

You can see how the skunk stamped its front paws when it saw him. That's the second warning sign that it is distressed (the first is the tail sticking up). It wasn't completely facing his rear to him when it sprayed--lucky for him, because direct spray is 10x nastier.

Btw, tomato juice does NOT work. It's a myth.

@Jesussavedmetoo, I was going to ask "How was his reaction so minor," but I guess it makes sense that it was a baby skunk and it sprayed him from a little ways off, so it's not the full-on reaction some people get after getting sprayed.

One of my friends was sprayed directly once... he was puking for 5 minutes straight. It smells nothing at all like a roadkill skunk- imagine extremly concentrated ammonia times about 1000, mixed with buring tires and a slight rotten-egg type smell.

I've been around wild and domestic skunks for 16 years, and I've never been sprayed. I can't claim it was any especial cleverness on my part, just luck, and being respectful. If I had the video equipment then, that I do now... Skunks are my obsession.

"the tomato and peroxide/baking soda treatments" are temporary treatments that need to be done several times (like 4 or 5+). go to petco, petsmart, or a large local pet store and look for "skunk off" or "nature's miracle: skunk odor remover" once for a human. twice, tops, is all it takes for a pet (it's all about getting the head and face cleaned).

Early this morning before sunrise, I was outside, and looking off in the distance and I saw it moving toward me out of the corner of my eye. I looked at it and it stopped and looked up at me ( it was about 10 feet away ). It was walking along side the wall of a building, and I chose to quickly duck out of its way down a breezeway. This is the second time a skunk has surprised me this year and been in close proximity. It was not smelly and it was cute. You gotta give em them a lot of respect. : )

my dog's white...cleaning him with tomato juice would dye his hair in the colour or spaghetti sauce stain haha!

my dog got sprayed (little bichon havanais), I wasn't outside with him. He went out for his night pee and I heard him barking agressively as usual and I walk to door to see....halfway to door the barking stopped. I open the door and he comes in head low tail between the legs and avoiding me. HE GOT SPRAYED and filled the WHOLE HOUSE. i couldnt kiss him for 3 weeks!

I don't get it. The skunk didn't even have his butt pointed towards the dude. Looks like he aimed for the tree. The kid must have caught a whiff of air drift, or some of the spray bounced off the tree and got on him.

But the little guy did give plenty of warning. His tail is/was up pretty much the entire time!

Tomato juice doesn't work, just masks the smell. Vinegar or hydrogen peroxide is the way to go.

The tomato juice is just an urban legend. Both my cat, and my dog got sprayed by a skunk, I tried many things to get rid of the hideous odor tomato juice, vinegar, even this special stuff from the pharmacy that was for skunk odor. The smell was so bad that it made me sick, and I had to keep both animals outside the house for several days.

What does work, it's not perfect but it's a LOT more effective than tomato juice, is vinegar and grease remover... the spray is actually an oil, and oils tend to seep in to the skin and clothes. So very hot water, LOTS of vinegar and other stuff that's good for cleaning when it comes to oily/fatty stuff...

Speaking from experience...tomatoe juice really doesn't do a good job. It helps...but not much. The best solution I've ever used on my dog is....baking soda and white vinegar. Using rubber gloves....sprinkle a good amount of baking soda on the dog rubbing it into the fur. Then pour on the white vinegar and work it into the fur while it's foaming. Rinse the dog (or yourself) thouroghly with water. Try not to get the vinegar in the pets eyes. Pet comes out smelling fresh as a daisy. It works good.
