I know that she sang one staged role in opera (Ulrica at the Met, 1955). After hearing her sing this raretity, it makes one wish they could hear her Adalgesia to Ponselle's Norma.
She is among my list of 10 greats who, if I had the opportunity to go back in time, I would choose to hear. I too have frequently been annoyed by rediculous comments, but i really hate sensorship too, after all, whats the point of wanting to hear only those things with which we agree?
I listen to a great many Marian Anderson recordings and videos - Bellini's Casta Diva is among her greatest, along with Schubert's "Standchen" + "Gretchen am Spinnrade" and surprises like "Coming thru the Rye" with Franz Rupp on 1950 video. I wonder if anyone can identify the location of the photo that appears about 49 seconds along in this video - outdoors with perhaps a family member or the piano accompanist? Thanks to you and others who contribute Marian Anderson videos.
you are welcome ./ Marian Anderson with Ernesto de Quesada in Mexico (Teotihuacán pyramid). Ernesto de Quesada (1886 — 1972) was the Cuban-born impresario who founded Conciertos Daniel, the classical music management agency now known as Hispania Clásica.

Thank you! I may be 2 years late on this 'critique'...but I've just discovered 'You-Tube' and its wonderes. Thnank God for Marian Anderson! Its unfortunate that 'us WASPS' (yes...I do mean us 'whites'!) treated this glod given voice as 'we' did. Thank goodness 'we' came t our collective senses before the time of such greats as Leontine Price and Jessae Norman!
"the Daughters of the American Revolution, or D.A.R. The D.A.R. would not permit Anderson to perform in the concert hall because she was black.
Many people protested, including Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of the American president. With Missus Roosevelt's help, Anderson was able to sing for an even bigger crowd in Washington. She gave a free concert in the open air, near the Lincoln memorial"

What an incredible vibrato she had. This is a very stirring recording. Awesome.
rix657 1 year ago 2
@rix657 The quickness of the vibrato is a consequence of the recording technology. It wouldn't have been this fast in person.
