That was so cool! Cristian Oviedo and Yazmin definitely caught people's attention. Very impressive and I know Cristian and they are not dance partner for those who have doutbs about it, this is just a natural leading versus a good following.
Question Apersaud.. Do you know if the first couple are dance partners, a couple? I ask because I wonder if she is just following him for the first time. The patterns seem so intricate that I was wondering if they had practice it before.. If not... WOW!!
All the patterns you see are leadable and don't require previous knowledge from the follow. As long as the lead is executed correctly, the follow (lady) will know where she needs to be or what to do.
Thats christian oviedo from l.a. and a young lady from vegas, for sure they have danced before, but they are not partners and its definitely not rehearsed.
@SunnysoulNY well this couple dance socially all the time and she knows most of his patterns.. they are however very intricate patterns she as you can see she could not follow some of them. and Christian has since come a long way and can lead on time much better now than he did then.
Some of the styling (arm movements, placements, stops and spins) are there to help use your body to interpret the music. If you focus on all the instruments in a song, you'll see the small nuances in movement, that to dancers, makes dancing a specific song more enjoyable.
I agree apersaud. People need to realize that these are different clips of different moments and different songs. That first video with Cristian Oviedo and Yazmin dancing was great but it was a really long song and several other guys were tagteaming during that dance. It just happened to be that Cristian felt like doing those moves at that time, but he is an extremely polished dancer, one of the best. Regardless of how good u get, everyone dances every song differently...develop ur own style.
if you check out what dancers are doing with the bottom half of their bodies--their feet--and don't focus exclusively on their hands--turns--you can see who is really dancing and who is not...then turn down the sound and play another song and you can see that many of dancers who look flashy are NOT even dancing to the beat of the song being played or performed...they are just mechanically doing their routines...sometimes LESS is MORE...this is why i liked the last three couple...
Great post apersaud! I was there on the side watching Cristian dance. Do you have the entire footage of Cristian, and those other two guys that were dancing with that girl during that song - it was great, especially the when the bald guy was dancing with her. Thanks for all the great salsa videos.
The dancers I like the most on this tape are the last three because they show more than technical ability with regard to turns but display that they are feeling the music and show amazing RHYTHM which many who have learned a lot of turns still lack and thus look sloppy...
I do agree with mexakin1977,on this video shouldn't be any other dancers other than Cristian and his dance partner, second couple besides being a really bad dancer,he is not even in good shape, and I do agree with apersaud about not judging and supporting the salsa dance but we can't mix high quality with really bad quality.
The second dancer is mario B if I am seeing right, and he is an internationally well known dancer, that was with "santo rico", plus he is a really cool dude, so please dont bash people like that!
I guess I didn't make the video so we would judge the couples, but rather to grab a glimpse of the essence of what happens at the social events in a salsa congress. There are a multitude of social dancers there: beginners, intermediates and professionals. I think we should accept the fact that not all of us are amazing dancers, but we still all come together to support the dance we call salsa.
Is there a vid out there of rest of the dance for just the first couple?

I agree with charibelle 23. It's way too much stylin' ...Salsa's meant to have fun and romance , not just to be looked at....Keep it natural

Some may consider "styling" as sabor, and that is dancing too? Everyone has their own style in interpreting the music :-)
