What probably happened was, while you were eating you left that open and the flies came and laid their eggs into your rice, and ew ...I hope you didn't ended up eating some eggs too...I'm sorry, but unwanted food need to be throw right way, dishes washed right way, and trash out of the house daily on the the hotter seasons or that's what you get! Those maggots are disgusting and full of bacterias which can cause several types of disease go search...be safe!

Oh my Gawd. That thing would either be in the dishwasher twice, or tossed. One of my roommates left a pot full of stew on top of the fridge (where no one saw it), and 1 MONTH later, when the kitchen was getting a distinctive bad odour, it apparently was full of maggots and the house was literally full of newly-hatched flies (I'd say at least a hundred). I was SO grossed out, and I only saw the pot after most of its contents had been tossed out and the maggots remaining were dead.

As HK is very hot during summer, and as u open your window presumably no air conditioner in your apartment (flat), it is understable that germs can flourish. Mind you, your kitchen table, sink and toilet are full of germs too if u look close enough... On the other hand, maggots are just protein, and they could be tasty if you add a bit of salt, pepper, and olive oil. In oher word, they wouldnt kill you if they are well fried or cooked.
