People forget things about Ken like the fact that he beat Bas Rutten both times back in MMA's heyday. Bas used to say that even though Ken threw palm strikes and neck chops Rutten could feel the sheer power of them when they connected. Ken was a dangerous man - unfortunately he just has a hard time living without that respect and now he's going down the path of embarrassing himself. I have much respect for him, though.
@armoredsoldner - I coild not have said that better. He is much deserving of respect that he just does not get at times. That has to be hard for any fighter to be in that situation towards the end of their careers
This is an old pancrase fight, the strikes were very limited and it was very different from the UFC. They had some classic fights in pancrase, but all the shots are real. Most of the bouts back in the older pancrase days were really slow and methodical, for the japanese audience.
The problem with Ken (imo) is age got to him. Some people are lucky in that sense as they can continue to fight in their 40's like Randy Couture. In his prime he match against Tito would have been completely different, imo. I am not saying would would win (same with Ortiz) just a different type of fight.
Maybe his few years in WWF screwed his body up a bit. Who knows? Ken Shamrock was awesome, just like many early MMA days! They rock!
they were, pancrase had a lot of rules and didnt even allow closed fist strikes, the early days of pancrase is exactly how a REAL pro wrestling match would look like, nowadays pancrase follows traditional MMA rules
i sort of like the open hand striking rules, it opens the fight up to a much more technical style. you wouldnt have seen shamrock go for half those submissions in a UFC fight
What's the deal with this is it a work or real? The suplex at the start is too smooth and they seem to stand up at some wierd points. Also why are they only slapping in the stand up and not striking at all in the guard.
I have been watching MMA since 1993. If you've followed MMA long enough, Shamrock actually was a very good fighter. His career peaked early in the early days of the UFC. This fight is really old; however, Shamrock improved dramatically over the 5 years following this. While he didn't have natural talent, he worked his ass off and still did really well. I have to still respect him. I remember very well his 3 year winning streak. He still had some respectable wins. Give the guy some credit.
philosopher2king: Ken participated in two worked fights in Pancrase, one of which he won against Hume, who injured himself in training, but instead of canceling the match they put on a worked shoot for the fans, and the other when he lost the KOP in his rematch against Suzuki. Pancrase didn't want Ken to be their champ in the event he lost to Severn in the UFC, who was known in Japan as a pro-wrestler. They feared it would look bad as they were trying to distance themselves from pro-wrestling
unfortunately that was common place in Japan. There was a very thin line between the fiction of pro wrestling and the real pancrase fights and sometimes that line got blurred. Even in the early days of Pride there were worked fights. Takada's wins in pride were worked not to men mention overmatched fighters for trained pros. Mostly the Japanese fighters benefited from this. To my knowledge Sakuraba earned his wins but you never know.
Not all of the Japanese fights were fixed. Pancrase formed by Funaki & Suzuki were not rehearsed at all. They were shootfighting/shoot-based wrestling. The rules differed from present day MMA. Yet, the fact remains that it's fighting for real - albeit under a set of rules.
Tocayo! You might be too young to remember but Shamrock fought in his prime in early UFC. The biggest hyped-up matches (and the most boring ones) were between him and Royce Gracie.
He did well in UFC, but went on to make more money in fake wrestling.
Yeah, had Ken not left the UFC in his prime for the WWF the way he did, who knows how much more success he could have had. Had Shamrock stuck around, we probably would've seen a very different Shamrock fight Ortiz.
This looks shoot style but still worked to some extent.
