The other thing about having the old style guide rod is that you can "press chamber" or "press clear" the gun with the edge of a desk/wall/whatever you can find in case your other hand is busy holding a flashlight or something. Never had to do it myself, but it could be useful in a sticky situation.
@ProjectDexter I have had no issues with the GI guide rod. However, I have since removed it and put the original one piece guide rod back. The only reason I did this is because the racking of the slide is a little smoother and easier with the full length guide rod. The difference is very slight but it's there and since I need a tool to reassemble my 1911 anyways (I cannot get the slide stop in without depressing the plunger in with a tool first) I decided to change it back.
@TheEnder42 thank you for your honest answer. Have you looked into the Wilson Combat 1 piece guide rod system? It doesn't require an allan key to disassemble and since it is one piece you don't have to worry about it shooting loose. I've heard good things, they run about $25 online.
If you've got tough fingers you don't need a tool for assembly either, but most people do because the edges of the push guide are fairly sharp. -Dex
Great Video Man, This has helped me tremendously in deciding what model of Springfield 1911 to purchase. I was going to wait on the new RO and add a few extra's to it (SS Beaver Tail, Hammer) , Stiple the front, add a Red FO Front sight / ( and add Black Starburst G-10 ) - After many hours contemplating, this already has everything! Just needs upgrading the Rod & Plug and it looks great without the guide Rod sticking out, Classic 1911. Now time to go purchase - SA ( "Loaded Target" ). Thank You!
@FUdirtbag Highly doubt it since the parts I installed were ordered directly from Springfield Armory and they never mentioned anything about the warranty being voided. Also, SA's Range Officer model 1911 uses this same GI guide rod.
i think you could have just left your original plug in there and just took the guide rod extension out and it would have worked fine (although it might hurt your hands when pushing the plug down).
and nice video it helped me figure out that i am gonna get a loaded springfield ive had my eye on but i just didnt personally like the full length guide rod look.
Thank you for this video. I am buying this same gun in 3 days and that guide rod was of concern to me. I was hoping this would work and now I know. I have already emailed springfield and got the ball rolling. Thank you again
You no longer need a tool to remove the guide rod - great. Looks like you still need one for the slide lock...

You can get a Wilson Combat full length guide rod that doesn't require an allen wrench. Check out my vid.

after a few months, are you still happy with the accuracy after removing the G-rod?

@TheEnder42 Aren't there FLGR that are a single piece that do not need an allen wrench or a pin to take down?

@42cujo I have TINY hands and the 1911 platform feels the best in my hands. They are great pistols for small hands.
