  • Thanx Isla, without you your dad would't wrote/sang this great song! Thank you and god bless!

  • is it just me who walks down the street with this on my ipod and is afraid of everybody all of a sudden?! at least the national protects me!!

  • @burn1980 I know how you feel. I'm on your side man. ;)

  • The National, Justin Vernon and Sufjan Stevens. That's why this is my favourite album of 2010. If anyone hasn't already seen it, The National play "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks" live with Vernon, should check it out.

  • This video is 4:20 long... I hate that I noticed that. <_<

  • @MatthewNumberVII Thats one thing people like us can remember!!

  • This song reminds me that i don't know if i can trust my boyfriend anymore.

  • @Tscfanx3 You and me both <3

  • This song reminds me of social anxiety.

  • Ah hello leitmotif, we meet again :)

  • I'm only afraid of trucks

  • How many words/names do you count???

  • Matt said when he was asked it was 'Yellow voices swallowing...' to go with the rest of use of colours in this song eg. orange umbrella and old red bodies. But live he says your voice is swallowing because it's easier

  • is it me or when you stare at this image it kinda wobbles around???

Amazing song by an amazing band

  • this speaks to my inner self, cleansing me of the world's impurities and allowing my soul to bleed out so i can be whole.

  • @ilovejuice211 Deep.

  • Wikipedia cites this song as being about Matt's anxiety over having a daughter, and not knowing who to trust. It's a truly amazing song

  • ...your voice is swallowin' my soul~soul~soul~

  • Thumbs up if your a hipster

  • @WutDfuzz omg

  • whats a hutch?

  • Gossip Girl or not, The National are still building up a beautiful community and fanbase which includes us! :)

  • you're the voice that's swallowing my soul

  • @maximoplf *yellow voice is

  • Hello sorrow in my soul.

  • When this song was featured on Gossip Girl it boosted the Nationals popularity, so who cares if people who made the effort to find the song.. So stop stereotyping !

  • Who's Hutch?

  • Who the fack is Hutch?

  • the national sent me here. yeah.....we tight like that!

  • Thumbs up if you're sick of people looking for thumbs up claiming someone sent them here when all that person did was recommend it and didn't expect them to spam the comment feed and take away from the amazing song!

  • @ElMalditismo Thumbs down for telling me to give you a thumbs up.

  • I do like how as soon as hutch tells people what music to listen to they have to individually remind us, then thumb up someone else's comment anyways.

I do enjoy this song, however. The progressive beat is nice to listen to. I'm definitely going to have to listen to more of The National.

  • Nobody fucking sent me. A dude called hutch said this was good so I (as in myself) looked it up

  • Far out nobody cares if Hutch sent you here! You are here for the music so fucking enjoy it! Is that hard?

  • Hutch, you legend!

  • Thumbs up if Hutch sent you here !!!

  • (Insert comment saying someone/something sent me here because I want people to put their thumbs up my butt so I feel like I've accomplished something in my otherwise worthless and meaningless life.)

  • Yea, Hutch sent me..... what of it?

  • Hutch

  • Hutch

  • You know it. Hutch.

  • Hutch sent me!

  • Hutch sent me here

  • I'm afraid of everyone

  • Fuck Gossip Girl and simply love this song!

  • I'm only afraid of myself

  • Can Someone tell me where the Love button is??(:

  • trop beau

  • Song that mentions drugs a lot

    Ends at 4:20

    Coincidence?

    I think not!

  • I suppose 13 people have sorted it out. Tell us how, please?

  • Matt Berninger is that fairy diggind deep in my heart. i could have my whole body inked with their music...

  • No one is going to agree but to me: Matt is the new Johnny Cash, except indie.

  • I like it so much....

  • thank you very much for this

  • Sufjan Stevens is present in this song as well. I think he goes well with the National.

  • @wbsMullet hahaha too true.

  • Comment removed

  • @wbsMullet

    that

that is the most elequently put way of saying the most obvious thing that nobody realises!!!

  • I got the drugs, but cant sort it out still....

  • I like it... - always found their lyrics very simple, but it goes well with the style.

  • I've always imagined this song to be about paranoia and possibly schizophrenia

  • @RoomFilms I always imagined it being about most everyone in the whole world Hmm... I guess we think alike.

  • and whats wrong if their songs are used in tv shows? I don't watch Gossip Girl, but it's actually good that now more people know about this awesome band. I also discovered some great music on movies and series. So don't complain, it's a good thing

  • Every popular bands needs money...look at Linkin Park, Green Day and million other bands. Their music was not always commercial like this, so don´t judge that!

  • Fuck everybody with those fucking gossip Girl thing... stfu and listen to this fucking music

  • Just discovered these guys recently and I feel like there songs would work perfect for a movie soundtrack :D

  • So what is the song about people???

  • @chardone69 It's about how the media is always warning us to be careful of everything and everyone. To be suspicious, or afraid, of everyone.

  • @elliberri Its also about our government and the police state we are becoming...

  • @chardone69

Not really "venom radio, venom television" the causes of his fear seem to be mostly media and his only solution he doesn't have "I don't have the drugs to sort it out" nothing really governmental in that.

  • Stunning.

  • 5 estrellas. Magnifica canción.

  • does sufjan stevens play on their album?? (i know he plays live with them sometimes) just curious! :)

  • @ursulade -- Yes, Sufjan is playing the harmonium and singing background vocals on this song. (Also, "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks" features Justin Vernon from Bon Iver singing backup.)

  • @iamthebyron wow!havent listened to this band much AT ALL !! but i LOVE sufjan AND bon iver...both the best performers i've ever seen !! must get into listening to them more!

  • @ursulade He does? That's awesome

  • Gotta love the national :)

  • Epic..........

  • Luckily there is a dislike button! Everyone who can't appreciate good music can go there!

  • Kiersten Holine's cover brought me here. This song is amazing.

  • THANKS...

  • What the fuck is gossip girl?

  • @justinld its a porno

  • @justinld Usually I'm nice but today, go fuck.

  • @justinld THUNDER COCK!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @justinld

    google it, you silly boy!

  • @justinld I can't believe you don't know what it is, I mean don't take me the wrong way but are you serious?

  • @LUHVABLEHAWTTIE He's joking.

  • @mellah027 Seems like it. Sorry, I just don't know why I feel so offended when people bitch on Gossip girl. thanks anyway

  • @LUHVABLEHAWTTIE Nope. Chuck Testa!

  • God bless the ability that I can listen to this more than 5 times.

  • the fact that this is on gossip girl or what not is about as important as every youtube comment ever written on any youtube video ever. WHY AM I WRITING THIS I'M TAKING SECONDS OFF MY PRECIOUS TIME IN EXISTENCE??????/??????? <3<3<#<#3lsjd flol lmao idk afaik ppppfff. does... not... commmmmputttttt.... oh yea, i'm drunk.

  • blah blah on everything else... this song is so good.

  • The National have been around for YEARS. Literally, years. It sucks other people don't know how to find good music on their own, instead of it just being handed to them from some stupid tv show.

  • V - meant to say hipster music snob btw....no offence

  • It's an awesome song....loads of people like it so does it really matter how people find out about it? Who the fuck cares whether someone heard on gossip girl or if they are a hipster music song who heard it "before it was cool". grow up.

(For the record, a friend sent me the link to this song.)

  • found out about them through portal 2 instantly fell in love with the song looked them up more and instantly fell in love with all of there music

  • oh hang on a second, I know about this song because I've been following each and every one of their albums, not because I heard it on some shitty mainstream TV show called gossip girl. why is this? because I'm not a massive cunt.

  • I dont get it guys someday somewhere you guys have listened to this band the very first time. Dunno where but everyone of you did. And what is the freakin problem with having heard it the first time on gg? what makes the difference? Every band would be happy about the fact that they have maybe 90000 fans more within one evening because everyone googled this song after having watched the episode. let's be happy for the national, jeez, it is about supporting the BAND and not fighting over it.chill

  • Ive never watched an episode of Gossip Girl...I just found this song because The National is a fucking fantastic group!

  • so if breathing is too mainstream then why do hipsters breath? Exactly. It's funny because hipsters aren't hipsters because they're also mainstream (if one person is doing I guarantee there's thousands of hipsters out there.) Hell I think it would be boring to be a hipster, only being able to hide in the shadows of everything.

  • YES I WATCH GOSSIP GIRL AND I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ANYONE EXCEPT THIS SONG. This show will always be flawless.

  • with my kid on my shoulders i try, not to hurt anybody i like,

BUT I DONT HAVE THE DRUGS TO SORT IT OUT

  • this band just pauses my day and i just lay there and listen in compleat silence i cant seem to move they stop me in my tracks I LOVE THIS BAND <3

  • People watch Gossip Girl? I think that's your first problem.

  • Who cares if this was on Gossip Girl? Gossip Girl consistently features great music, even though it is a fluffy show.

  • @Abbytater lol fluffy show

  • Great snakes! He really is saying "YELLOW VOICES swallowing my soul..."

I've had it wrong for a good while now.

  • THANKS...i love this group...super

  • words cannot explain how outstanding this song is..i've loved it for ages and it was so awesome when they played it on gossip girl as well =] this band is sooo underrated, everyone needs to hear them!

  • Being a hipster is so mainstream!!! YOU FUCKIN HIPSTERS GTFO. Good music deserves exposure, this being good music probably means it deserves a little exposure. Get outta here with your beanies and your big ass glasses. bastards

  • @TRUHATER1 lol the "bastards" at the end killed me! XD

  • @TRUHATER1 "Being a hipster is so mainstream". Couldn't have said it better! Hah, just perfect. So paradoxal and funny.

  • @TRUHATER1 's just jelly. lawl.

  • @TRUHATER1 Being a hipster doesn't mean you have to look like that. I'm far from a hipster but I get labeled with that shit because of stereotypes like that.

  • Yellow Voices Swallowing my SOUL SOUL SOUL!!

  • @colm147 your voice is swallowing my SOUL SOUL SOUL!!

  • Hey, at least it's not like the songs have been covered on Glee or anything.

  • simply brilliant

  • kinda reminds me of bowie

  • The reason they were on Gossip Girl was because bands need to make money and licensing to TV shows, video games and movies is the best way to do it. Companies like using indie music because it's cheaper to use. The studios save money, the bands make money. There's nothing wrong with that equation at all.

  • @ironklaw exactly. And don't forget liscensing, the album producers buy the rights and can make shit loads of money off the bands they own without the band's permission. Because to companies a signed check is permission.

  • @ironklaw Nice explanation. Most of the people attack bands for selling their music.

  • @ironklaw That's correct, people shouldn't attack bands for selling music. One has to be able to put bread on the table.

  • Your voice is swallowing my soul

  • Im no Hipster but don't dig the mainstream music scene. Mainly because it sucks balls, So you bust on people who have the same views as I do about it get a life tards.

  • @ManicPoetRyRy Saying mainstream music sucks is like the epitome of being hipster.

  • @Profilo9 People like you who try and label everyone is why blowjobs was invented!!!! Why wasn't you noe now?

  • Is there any site where I can find the OFFICIAL lyrics of this song? Everyone I ask has a different interpretation and it's driving me crazy!

  • heard it at Coachella :)

  • Your voice is swallowing my soul soul soul

  • @patowenmusic

    You're so fucking right!

  • wtf is gossip girl? srsly

who cares anyway.. the national are awesome so why don't we discuss that instead

  • Why does everyone care so much about this whole hipster debate? If you like the music, listen to it. If you don't, then stop listening. I like this music so I'm going to listen to it and I don't really care if anyone else does or who those people might be.

  • I'm a Gossip Girl watcher and someone who likes The National. I liked them before they were played on Gossip Girl (found them through MTV's website - now lets talk about mainstream!) and even when it was played on Gossip Girl I didn't even recgonize the song at first. Its great that bands get exposure, like is the band it self up set that they were used in an episode of Gossip Girl- probably not. Therefore we should respect them and what they decide to do with their music.

  • Sufjan Stevens!

  • WTF, It seems like anyone who watch GG is a fucking idiot. People grow the fuck up and stop putting label above everything and everyone. It's disgusting.

By the way this album is amazing, can't get over it.

  • @leyton88 Yeah, why don't we grow the fuck up and stop labeling people as "fucking idiots" for watching shows we don't like?

  • I don't watch Gossip Girl, my friends know that and if I wouldn't have read the comments, I would have never known. Still, it's not going to prevent me from recommending this band. I like Lady Gaga, too. Was she on Gossip Girl, too? I'm sure one of you closet watchers could tell me? At least I'm man enough to listen to shit I like.

  • @sippix Lady Gaga was on Gossip Girl

  • The National always make me cry.

  • What's gossip girl??? Really.

  • @photojohne it's one of the best series ever!!!! :D start watching it by tomorrow there are online episodes on internet! it's truly amazing, addictive I could say!

  • I don't really care about songs being featured on tv, but I mean...Gossip Girl just sucks. Soo....

  • I agree that it is a good thing they're getting more exposure, sure, they deserve it.. it's just, well, it's pretty much fact that underground music is better in pretty much every genre there is.. It's just more competitive, and I don't want The National to lose that spark which they so obviously have..

  • Gossip Girl in my life and never plan to, it's not my thing, simple as that. But I'm so elated for The National's success! As should you all be, whether you're a fan of the show or not. The song is fucking awesome. END OF STORY.

  • Tha fuck? Why the hell are people assuming The National is limited to indie/hipster labels? I mainly listen to metal and dubstep, but The National is by far one of my top favorite bands and have been for quite some time. I don't understand why there is always some form of confrontation when music gains exposure - or just that people of all backgrounds listen to it. Can't we all agree it's a brilliant song by a wonderful band and be done with it? I've never watched an episode of...

  • why are people saying "so what if it was used in Gossip Girl?" as if it was a bad thing. If anything, the band is gaining exposure and further developing its name. Gossip Girl itself is seen by majority of its viewers as a show with good music. I myself looked up this song after watching the episode. So if it's just because Gossip Girl is too mainstream for you indie kids, go listen to your Arcade Fire and post your deep shit on tumblr.

  • @TheOnlyHollowDizi pretty astute observations you've made there.

  • I do not think that people mind that this song is being played on Gossip Girl, it is just that they want people to know that they had known this band before even before it is being played on Gossip Girl. Personally I don't really like Gossip Girl, but any form of recognitions given to this underrated bands, such as The National, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, and more by being played in the mass media is definitely great. Gives them greater access. But i found this band on pitchfork though XD

  • nevermind the source. enjoy the music and the fact that more people are now able to appreciate what The National has brought to it. not all music lovers are immune to gossip girl.

btw, I discovered them from letterman.

  • noo 9 has no life why becose they only hear pop and rap

  • his voice is swallowing my soul. <3

  • I Love this song ( I´m German people, not good speak English)

Mein Englisch hört sich grausam an

  • Not a bad song on this album. If you haven't bought it yet, go get it.

  • This song reminds me of the quote "They're beautiful. The sadness makes you even more beautiful."

  • What's wrong with discovering artists from a drama series. They are getting more publicity. The mainstream artists are overshadowing them and getting more attention and publicity and we tend to ignore those artists/bands that are better but are not known. so i think its not a bad thing.

  • @battlechi Of course it's a bad thing, the music then just becomes an accessory to the show like a nice handbag or lipstick featured on the show.Rock is dead if it can't learn to stand on its own two feet and if it keeps pandering to all of this shite like the OC,One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl.Let people who love music come looking for it,that's the only way to keep people interested.

  • @DustyAndPistolPete I know where you going. But how can they even be discovered if you don't even know the band or artist even exist at the first place right. How to look for the music. Google it? Hmm.. Listen to radio which most of them are mainstream. By all means, as long as they are getting more recognition rather than being ignored, its not a bad thing. And all dramas and movies need music background. I bet they are honored to be part of the movie or drama series.

  • @battlechi absolutely agree, sometimes we just have no idea that a band like this exists, and thanks to shows like gossip girl, people will be more interested to listening to its other songs, which I think is a positive thing for bands themselves as well

  • WITH MY KID ON MY SHOULDERS I TRY.. so soulful

  • They dont have one crap song they're amazing!

  • I hope they play this song here in Chile (Lollapalooza) because I love it, I could listen to it over and over again.

  • i love, love, love this song.
