That's the problem with Chinese today, is like me using English to talk about ancient Chinese Mandarin. The ancient Chinese writting can only be spoken in Mandarin with whatever accent they got, but not Cantonese, Hanamese, Teocheow, Hokkien, Hakka or any regional dialects. Try to recite Tang Song Dynasty 300 poets in any kind of dialects compare to Mandarin, and you will know why Mandarin is spoken long long time ago.

@sux888 well a detailed explanation will take too long but in short, cantonese is a dialect of chinese and actually used by a lot of chinese people for a very long time before the Manchus(Qing dynasty), who are not real Chinese, took over China and made Mandarin the dominant dialect. In fact, if you look a some older pre-communist era books or maps, all the spelling of cities are based off of cantonese. Therefore, cantonese, which has been a chinese dialect for centuries, is real chinese.
