The mission statement for the UC system involves a public university level education available to all residents of California. Now, it's just as costly as a private university. Mission failed.

And, theclash, maybe instead of cutting professors and raising fees, the regents should forgo their annual holiday bonuses. Makes more sense to me. Save the education, sacrifice the greed. And for people like me, whose family makes more that 70k a year, but doesn't support them, it is calamitous.

Berkeley students paying 1/3 of what it would cost in a private school for top-grade education. With $500 million cut from UC budget there was no other way to operate short of laying off professors and closing campuses. The hike only affects those whos families make more that $70k a year and low-income students do not face the hike. The hike itself is from $8,000 a year for UC undgergrad to 10k...hardly calamitous. The fact that the state is broke supporting all sort of social programs.

Actually, I am a Berkeley graduate, class of 98 but unlike a spoiled latchkey brat I did not demand free education but worked full time while attending school.  The do-nothing, know-nothing wannabe "rebels" are just losers without a cause. Pathetic.

I completely agree. I worked a 40-hour a week job while in engineering school to pay for my wife's private school bills and my public university bills. Not only did I graduate in the top 5%, but I received my masters degree and had all of our school bills paid-in-full one year after graduation.

These lazy pukes want everything handed to them.

@REman07 I am sorry that you are too lazy to believe I paid for my own education. I worked a full-time job while taking a full-load of classes for six years. I had my all my school costs paid off before I graduated. I also worked through the latter half of highschool saving for college (albeit I didn't pay rent while in highschool, but most people don't).

@REman07 The reason i disagree with you is that you are just as ignorant as the "pay the entire cost" crowd. Why does it have to be free? Your way or the highway? There is plenty of empirical evidence gather by economists throughout Europe that shows charging a SMALL fee for college has the effect of making students appreciate their education more. Note when I say small I do not mean $30000 a year, more like $2500-5000 a year like the UK does it. Read up and stop the ideological garbage.

My wife's 5 year degree cost $86,000 tuition, room and board. We had that paid off along with my public university education within a year after I graduated (I graduated 1 semester after her).

That is because both of us worked while in college and I worked full-time, often getting only 3-4 hours of sleep a night.

That is so awesome, lol. Our school has been calling the governor and other such peoples to leave messages (or rarely even talk to a person) complaining about the budget cuts and letting them know that how they handle it WILL effect our voting. This is just amazing though.
