Man I love this! The "Stages" live recorded version is one of my top 5 favorite songs ever (I wish Mick Ronson was added tho') What a blast to SEE it now
Is it just me or does this whole concert just feel.......awkward. It's like they had a long layover at an airport so Bowie just grabbed some fellow musicians and started playing in the canteen. Odd.
Belew and Fripp have the same thing in common, they are both prog... guitarist,,,and for those days it was and still is amazzzzing....and i played by ear to do prog,,,starting 1980...
I am in Italy at that time I have not quite grasped this, Bowie at the time also wanted to go for androgyny and homosexual. And 'more concrete that his look is referring to this
glad I was born in 1962 and get this all over me. Belew is gorgeous. Bowie is oke. More talking heads and zappz. No more heroes anymore no more china girls.
Most studio like version I have ever seen performed live, with little ad-libbing. Musikladen is the bomb! Despite the absence of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp, the band manages to perform it very close to album cut accuracy with the not too shabby Roger Powell on synth/keys ( UTOPIA/RUNDGREN) and Adrian Belew (ZAPPA) on guitar. Simon House, on violin, helps ensure the ambient drone doesn't disipate, and as pointed out, David's vocals soar and are some of his best, live, I ever heard.
I've watched this series of videos and it's fantastic stuff ! The funny thing is that quite a few of the comments mention Adrian Belew and no one seems to have noticed Bernard Edwards on bass and Tony Thompson on drums...the rhythm section of "Chic" (Good times, We are family, le' freak etc..)

Amazing. This song takes on a life of its own with this group of musicians. Is anyone today performing with this kind of dedication?

Wow, Belew is playing Robert Fripp's part, three years before they would be in a band together.

Sorry stratcat, but that's not Edwards and Thompson on bass/drums. It's George Murray and Dennis Davis.

He plays it even better these days. He can sing it pretty well too. I've only heard two guitarists play this song properly, Belew and Fripp.
