I just realized after all these years that my friend is stupid.
I'm serious. It's sad. We'd hang out twice a year. Talk on the phone a few times a year. We'd talk about fashion, celebrity gossip, nothing important. We'd laugh a lot.
Then I woke up after seeing "Freedom for Fascism" I shared it with him and he said it was all conspiracy and he's suspicious of the documentary's message.

I think Obama will get in not due to America wanting him, but due to the desire to keep the GOP out of a 3rd term. A default mandate is an ugly thing, & it'll give him a free ticket to drift as far right as he wants - once the GOP demon is slain (for 4 years anyway) much of America will quickly go back into the usual coma.
As oil goes toward $200, that coma will be harder & harder to maintain. Eventually, America will wake up naked in a snowbank in a very nasty neighbourhood in a strange town.

The reason obama mouths positions that most people disagree with is because it no longer matters what american public opinion is. It no longer matters because america is no longer a democracy. The reason america is no longer a democracy is because 90% of the populace votes based on who the media tells them to vote for, they don't even know what the issues ARE anymore, let alone what position the candidates have taken on the issues (and usually they don't even bother).

Nonetheless, from personal observations, I still must say... the tendency is for third party candidates to defeat their own purpose by drawing votes away from the platforms that most resemble their own. On the one hand, this makes those platforms lean their way to recapture these votes. On the other hand, this makes the platforms most similar to them lose the election.

I get what you are trying to do. Back in 2000 when the election was heating up, the UAW threatened to back Nader and the Green Party. I am an Independent - left the Dems because they're GOP-lite... Pelosi, Reid, FEH! But I have a 12-year-old. We live in poverty. I have serious health problems, receive NO assistance. My best shot for my son's sake is to make an independent decision: I've backed Nader for years & McKinney is my hero. But NEITHER is electable in the current climate. McCain would be SUICIDE. For my kid, my only options are Obama & McCain. I am still considering, but it appears it will have to be Obama.

To sadclowndoesfrown: If Ralph Nader is the candidate you agree with the most then isn't that the person whom you should vote for? I am a Nader supporter and, in my opinion, the only way I would waste my vote would be for me to vote for someone other than the person with whom I am in agreement the most. Now THAT would be a wasted vote!

Where was the test? I did one during the Democrat primaries once and it said Kucinich was the candidate I was closet to even though by then he'd ended the campaign.
I haven't seen a test that included Nader yet which would be fun to get everyone including conservatives to take.

I just had what was close to a shouting match with my roommate about this.
I live in Texas. I... don't see any way Obama can win here. The good politicians make the democratic party look good, but that's only 1 in maybe 100. The rest are shit. The good candidates are doing the democrats a favor. They should leave and join other parties. Especially the big-named ones...
