Lloyd Cole wrote this song for an obscure movie called My Beautiful Landrymat which was a small film about a Gay Desi and a English Yabo and the reactions their families go through on it. What is absolutely cool is that (especially on the LP version) he wrote the swirling computer track first and then danced around the riff building the track on layer after another. That is a legitimate way to make music---play 8 notes over and over and something will come of it!!!
If YouTube can achieve anything, I hope it widens an audience to some of the most understated and brilliant bands of the '80s! Love you Lloyd. Genius! :)
i saw lloyd cole & the commotions in 1986 at the Melbourne Concert Hall (Australia) on 5th May. Love Lloyd Cole. There is not mostly a single day goes by I dont listen to them .. .. ..ritual daily walk the dog mostly Love Mainstream. Love The Cure too.

kerr from simple minds would not let whistle test show coverage of their show. i would have left after Lloyd Cole anyway, i wouldn't have hung around to see kerr
Massively underrated songwriter. Rattlesnakes was one of the best debut albums ever. This one's from Mainstream which was the 3rd LP. I saw them on the Easy Pieces tour which was to support the launch of the 2nd album and they were as good live as in the studio. That's not always a compliment as they were great musicians but not necessarily great entertainers so they were never going to headline big stadium tours

@knobbystiles Almost ridiculously underrated, hopefully the YouTube generation is discovering him with all the videos on here. All his stuff seems to be stuck at around 10-15 thousand views, so guess what, I think he's still the same musical
I just found your little site here . . .and it is tremendous!!! I have never blogged or commented before, but for Lloyd, well I just had to. He is undoubtedly the most under-rated musician from the '80s (or ever). I will be back to look at the old videos and dream about the days filled with brilliant music and heads filled with brilliant hair.
I recorded this show waiting to see simple minds,am sure the Waterboys were supporting them too,,wore the tape out on the video watching it over & over, great stuff :0)
I was only 16 and i remember being a bit drunk.Got in when In Tua Nua were on.Saw Lloyd Cole who were immense and then Simple Minds...my mates said the Cult were on but i can't remember them. Was a silly wee boy with a bit too much to drink..Overall i loved it.Was my first stadium gig and watching this brings back alot of great memories.
Just one observation- here, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions sound a lot like Simple Minds. But then did Simple Minds get influenced by Lloyd Cole? I mean 'Alive and Kicking' sounds a lot like 'Mr. Malcontent' and the former was released much later than the latter.
Alive and Kicking was released early 1986 although the album"once upon a time" was in 1985.I'm sure mr Malcontent was released the same year or maybe 84.There are similarities but there was alot of good music at the time with Hipsway and Love and money sounding similar to Simple Minds. You know how a city gets a sound like Manchester and Liverpool well Glasgow in the mid 80's had that sound..A time when we were moving away from keyboards back to guitar.
Thanks for this baby! Don't recoginise this song either..like it though!!! An 80's band i missed somehow again right? But thanks for showing me now! Is he saying 'johnny' at the beginning? you picked this one good babe! xxx
Lloyd based the song on the 1985 movie 'My Beautiful Launderette', in which Daniel Day-Lewis plays Johnny, a racist dropout who finds himself having a gay inter-racial love affair. (It WAS the 80s!)
