It's a pity we didn't have a referendum in Germany. I think the political elite would've been pissed off by the result. Unfortunately, our consitution doesn't allow nationwide referendums.

You are wrong - Germany has a fine constitution that protects its people. If someone wants to change the constitution in Germany, a referendum is constitutional like in Ireland - It was just ignored.... That's when the population should have showed their interest and come with us on the streets in the tuesday demos. The Lissabon Treaty has now been postponed untill 2010.

NO vote = we are still in the EU, like we are now, and the EU must be more accountable to the people of Europe. It stops the runaway power of the EU parliament and its gravy train expenses.
YES vote = no way back, we can't undo mistakes made in the treaty or the EU, our say in EU is halved. Some countries say is doubled.
The mature thing is to stand up and tell EU to correct the problems, not to give in to the accusing tut-tutting of EU politicians trying to tell us we should be embarrassed.

We don't get paid for it, the sun is shining outside, and still we join the debates online, sometimes against professional politicians. Please vote NO to the Lisbon Constitution. It is not good enough to have a European Constitution that reads like a phone book and that only the Irish citizens get to vote on. Democracy is in the hands of the Irish people. Voting no to Lisbon will not change the economic situation for the better or the worse. This is a tactic being used by the Government and certain media with vested interests in a yes vote to distract from the actual content of the Treaty. Please do not be fooled, vote NO.

we joined europe in 1973 and we got structural funds. emigration and stagnation and low self esteem (post colonial) kept us down til 1988 and 1990. both big football occasions. then we got our first woman president. corporate tax rates went down. education was paramount to growth. from this well of self discovery cam the now dead celtic cub. we voted no and our tumble started. fuck them anyway and vote no again when they demand. they can stop the cash but they can't stop us growing vegetables!!!

France and The Netherlands already rejected it when labelled "The EU Constitution" so why the backlash on the Irish for following the example set by the French and Dutch? Irish voters are being bullied into another referendum, we are being threatened to accept this or face economic ruin. The Irish need the support of the EU citizens who have had their democratic voice silenced.

It's a pity we didn't have a referendum in Germany. I think the political elite would've been pissed off by the result. Unfortunately, our consitution doesn't allow nationwide referendums.
Thank God there are countries with sensible people in the EU like Ireland, Britain or Denmark who also get to decide...

You are wrong - Germany has a fine constitution that protects its people. If someone wants to change the constitution in Germany, a referendum is constitutional like in Ireland - It was just ignored.... That's when the population should have showed their interest and come with us on the streets in the tuesday demos. The Lissabon Treaty has now been postponed untill 2010.

I went to vote, even though I thought it would pass, voted no because my morals would not let me vote yes. I guess everybody else felt the same. So proud that we stood up to the bullies. I hope this will boost tourism numbers from everybody who's saying thank you :) come see a free and democratic country!!

I can't seem to figure out why your accusing people of being "Anti-Democratic". You insult the voters and their campaigners by saying the vote was fixed. The people of my country spoke, which is full democracy. The Treaty took away the people's voice. Therefore the Treaty itself is Anti-Democratic.
Oh and by the way, The Church is actually *against* the Treaty. So blaming Satan really makes no sense.
