About war much has been written. More must yet be said by those who saw them die, so that the dead may rest, and sight be gained, to see war for what it was, and is: War is not fighting, though fighting's what we see, nor is it death, for death is but it's end. It is the rancor of disunited hearts, the death of love, the end of hope. The war around us echoes in our hearts, and grants it life. Once, mortals dared to tame this ancient beast, and yet it thrives. Each age must fight this force
The orchestration is part of this, according to the complete works, vol 19. I had the privelage of performing this with a chamber chorus in college. It is as beautiful as I remember. Thanks for posting.
From what I can tell, this is Schoenberg's own orchestration, though he only wanted it used if the choral group doing the piece had intonation problems. Having performed it as a chorister in my youth, I can say that intonation can be a problem, though we managed pretty well without the instrumentation. Great music, no matter how you slice it. Happy Birthday, Arnie, wherever you are!
I mean no disrepect, but this orchestration is not necessary and adds nothing but distraction to this magnificent peace. The beauty of this piece has been thoroughly compromised here.
you may very well have a point, however I decided to post this on the basis of it being so little heard and seeing that it deserves recogntion any version of it would do,taking into consideration that there are so few recordings of this great composition I had little choice .
In the score I've sung from it says that the piece is intended to be sung a capella but the optional supporting orchestration can be used if deemed necessary. Always a beautiful piece of music though!
i've only ever heard pieces by schoenberg that sound completely out of the ordinary, but this has shone a new light on it all for me. i didn't know that he could write something as beaufiul as this.
Very nice! Opravdu úžasná skladba, škoda, že neumím anglicky, abych ji dostatečně vychválil...

Tragically, Schoenberg, in his later years felt that "peace on earth" would never be realized and thought this work should no longer be performed.

Any details of this recording? Who did it? I like both concepts, a capella as well as instrumented - great sound w/ clarinttes.
