  • I love Bernadette, but I prefer Bette Midler's version of Rose's Turn better it's more feisty idk. LOVE YOU BERNADETTE!

  • she is my idol!

  • The best ever!

  • She's not a mama. Too young looking and sounding

  • @PERRAPERICLES She's actually in her 60s.

  • she sings jakes part in the two and a half men intro #fact

  • she blows my mind.

  • This year was hard for Tony Voters! Think about either give it to Bernadette Peters for "Gypsy" or Heather Headley for "Aida". I wouldn't be able to choose.

  • @DeontezL It was between Bernadette Peters for Gypsy and Marissa Jaret Winokur for HAIRSPRAY. Heather won in 2000.

  • bernadette peters is lovely, but what is wrong with Hugh's hair?!

  • is it weird that i think her being sick made the performance better? i don't know why i just sort of loved the raspiness...

  • And she had an extreme respiratory infection here. That's what im talking about! You go girl! You deserved that 2 minute standing ovation!!!

  • I didn't like her perfomance in the musical at all (saw the video), but in THIS perfomance, I really believe she kicked Patti's butt. GOD, the "Well, someone tell me..." gives me chill every fucking time

  • what's up with hugh's hair?

  • @karekarekid1 I know right?!

  • Bernadette is incredible - there's no doubt. However, Patti's performance was more raw, more real.

  • Oh! My! Gawd!!! There is NO ONE like Bernadette! She had me shredded by the end of this performance!

  • This is how you bring down the house!!!!

  • @ShortySOM ... AMEN Shorty!!!!

  • Bernadette was the best mama rose. Sorry. I had to say it. Sorry patti.

  • Why the heck did she not win the Tony.

  • INCREDIBLE.

  • She and Patti both do AMAZING performances of this and just Rose in general! This is just wonderful! The Broadway world is not like it used to be... It will be hard to find any women better than Bernadette and Patti. Shame.

  • @walt1896 Follow in Sutton Foster's footsteps??? You stupid hag. Maybe you should tell your overrated idol that!

  • @watt1896 You are a lunatic, you Sutton Foster troll! Have you actually seen any of your idol's videos on Youtube? Her squeaky voice and hammy acting are all over the place! SUTTON FOSTER IS THE MOST OVERRATED ACTRESS IN THE WORLD! She has nothing on Bernadette Peters! You, "walt1896," and your 1,000 other usernames, are such a troll and want to be the only person posting comments on Sutton's videos and mark all others as SPAM. You're as ugly as your overrated idol!

  • @ruthiehenshallesmiz Why are you trashing Sutton Foster? I've seen Bernadette Peters perform on several occasions and I've seen Sutton Foster perform twice. Sadly, I've only seen Patti Lupone in video, but we can agree she's amazing. Sutton, Bernadette and Patti have all won 2 Tony awards each. They aren't the same types of performers, but they are all good. Sutton Foster just has the better dance moves. I do love Bernadette Peters by the way, but that doesn't mean I can't like other performers.

  • @ruthiehenshallesmiz I hate her too man. She ruined Anything Goes. RUINED!

  • I Love Bernadett, But she aint got nothing on BETTE!! I

  • If that's not putting over a number, i don't know what is.

  • Bernadette actually does have a beautiful voice.....example: Into the Woods. however, when ur used to singing with beauty, it's really hard to convert it into something showy and raw like this, and yet she captured it perfectly.

  • I can watch this over and over again and still be stunned when it goes to "Well someone tell me when is it my turn!" all the way thru the end. Amazing

  • Her acting is absolutely brilliant. I love the subtlety and how the whole time, she sounds like she's holding back a sob.

  • I hear they are making this a movie with Barbara as Mama Rose!!!

  • @lilpokey731 Oh, I hope hope hope it happens!!

  • Bernadette Peters is brilliant, this caliber of performance with an over 100 degree fever, amazing.

    Chills.

  • chills. Bernadette Peters is brilliant.

  • 1 word DAMN!

  • For me it is really her physicality that sells this. Her voice isn't as good as some others, but the narrative, emotional story and physicality are spot-on. SPOT. ON.

  • wait WHAT? THIS is Bernadette Peters?! The woman that was oon Grey's and passed unnoticed? So, one of theater's legends passed right in front of me and I had no idea? Holy crap.

  • who the hell told hugh jackman long hair looked nice on him.

  • @Wrex28 I think he grew it out for Van Helsing. :-)

  • oh kurt.

  • i loved her in Rodger and Hammerstein cinderella!!!! but kurts version was amazing but nothing says beautiful much like broadway. you go Bernadette peters

  • ...Holy shiz.

Hugh Jackman with long hair AND Bernadette Peters as "Rose"?

Thank you, life. Thank you so very much. :D

  • there is a certain raspiness to her voice that is great. Gives the performance such an edge!

  • oh my god...i would have stood up right as the last note ended

  • When I come back in my next life, I want to be Bernadette's purple dress. Girl wore that out!

  • @Monrocsol Not to be rude, but are you deaf?

  • @OMGTKKYBDx no, she has a certain sound that reminds me of a duck cartoon.

  • according to IMDB, she was suffering from a respiratory infection at the time of this performance. I think she did an amazing effing job!

  • I love this song. Bernadette Peters is good

  • CHILLS.

  • when the video started, hugh's hair scared the shit out of me xD

  • Vocally, I don't like it, but I think Peters is a VERY good actress and does a lot with the part.

  • I really do love her performance of this. As to the always going "Who was the best Rose ever" argument, I like different things about them. Bernadette however, is my favorite overall, because I think she's the only Rose I've ever watched who truly embraced the sexuality of her. As much as Rose is a mother, she's also a woman, and one who has neglected herself as a woman as much as she has traumatized her kids. I love that Bernadette adds that element to this song. Respect to all Roses, however.

  • As much as I love Bernadette's version. I still think nothing beats Patti LuPone's version

  • Bernadette in Gypsy was my first B'way show. What a gift to us all she is. I was so excited that night, and she didn't disappoint. My God, she gave me chills.

  • The performance was FAB... not even going to comment on Hugh's hair!

  • How didn't Bernadette win the Tony?

  • Bernadette Peters ♥

  • She's totally channeling Angela Lansbury here.

  • my fave revival mama

  • i luv it so much

  • Inspiring

  • freakin' awesome!

  • It's sad that I've watched this 229,319 times ;D

  • I can't believe she was as sick as she was and still gave a performance like that. What a legend, what talent, that woman is incredible!

  • nice hair hugh

  • 11 ppl never got a turn :(

  • Comment removed

  • And I can't believe she was SICK!

  • I always get shivers down my spine while watching this. I don't get that when watching Patti for some reason.

  • Isn't she like the only woman to play the role out of about 5 that didn't recieve a Tony Award? x

  • @asswhole239 Neither Peters nor Ethel Merman (who originated the role) won Tony's for their performances. So no, she's not the only one.

  • @asswhole239 Believe it or not... Ethel Merman herself did not win the Tony. She lost to Mary Martin for The Sound of Music.

  • While I've heard others sing this song "prettier", this is the first time that someone has made me just tear up and snatched my breath when she breaks down. I wish I had seen this with her in the role. So much hurt anger...

The sign of a true star, going on sick as a dog and still blowing the socks off the audience...

  • Bernadette....is perfect....there are no words that would do her justice....

  • SHES AMAZING!

  • I'm in tears. I don't think the world will ever understand how much I love Bernadette.

  • I prefer Patti, but she's great too; I particularly love the way she moves on the stage, so classy!

  • Sick and she still sings and acts 100 times better than me. Damn it.

  • Love it!!!!! Love it so, so much!

  • a lot better than i remember it being but still not better than her clip doing Rose's Turn in the theatre...and definitely the best chokeup-stutter on Mama of all Mama Rose's since Ethel! :)

  • Best chokeup in the "Mama..." section ever. On par with John McMartin's choking in "Live, Laugh, Love."

  • @MattBarlow To me, she's the only actress who made that stutter and stumble feel real.

  • Bernadette is a STAR

  • no x insultar a bernadette pero no creo que lo hiso fantastico en la cancion puede ser por que no se sentia bien pero nada como patti lupone en el 2008

  • Does this lady ever age??? She must have found the fountain of youth!!!

  • Do you have the rest of the Tony's? I would love to see the number the cast of La Boheme performed, but all I can find is one very bad quality video...

  • so fucking incredible!

  • I have listened to almost every existing version of this song and I have to say that my faves are this one and the Glee one, seriously Bernadette Peters is singing and acting the shit out of this song!

  • I cried the first time I saw this.....

  • gave me shivers......... stunning

  • does anyone have a copy of the show? i would soooooo love to see it...dear God does she act the hell outta of the song...

  • does anyone have a copy of the show? i would soooooo love to see it...dear God does she act the hell outta of the song...

  • Sick or not, and no matter who else plays this part, no one will EVER be able to touch Bernadette. This IS Broadway

  • i wish i could "love" this video. lol.

  • absolutely stunning.

  • Was she ill here? What did she have?

  • @maszlagma She was very, very ill. She had a viral infection.

  • yay!!! me love it sooo much!!!!

  • This gives me chills everytime I watch it. Incredible.

  • she's so fierce <3

  • I'm actually crying, this is amazing.

  • Oh...2003. Well, she looks great for 55...

  • Not the best Rose (that's Ethel) but damn does she look good for 60 something!

  • beautiful .. i dunno what else to say.

except this got a 2 minute standing ovation . one of the longest in tony awards history. fact.

& she was so robbed , thats a fact in anyones right mind.

  • @NeuwirthFan Did you watch this? Or even see her live?? There's a breakdown here. It's clear, it's precise, and it's gut-wrenching. It's not a psychotic breakdown like LuPone's; that's not to say either Peters or LuPone is better; they're two very different women who saw the role very differently.

  • @NeuwirthFan Well, you don't have to like it; opinions differ, & that's fine. However, by definition of Laurents & Sondheim, "Rose's Turn" is a breakdown captured in song, so any version of it is a breakdown; but there are different ways to play & to interpret a breakdown. Peters' is far more internal & subdued; it's an emotional breakdown, which is consistent with her portrayal of Rose. Patti's Rose was more brash & out-there, so her breakdown was very wild and psychotic.

    Diff'rent strokes.

  • @NeuwirthFan Like I said, you don't have to like it, but because the SONG is a breakdown, this *IS* a breakdown as well. You might not see it, but that doesn't make it any less there or true. Not everyone has a breakdown the same way.

  • @boynamedalexxx You worded that perfectly.

  • @slidingd00rs haha, well, thank you! I have occasional moments of insight...mainly Bernadette-related, lol.

  • i keep wanting to not like BP.... but it's not working, lol!

  • From IMDB trivia: Bernadette Peters had been suffering from a severe respiratory infection and had missed several performances of the show. Originally, the producers did not want her to perform live at the Tonys for fear of her damaging her vocal chords. She refused to cancel and insisted on performing live. She got through the song and received a 2-minute standing ovation one of the longest in Tony History.

  • It's kind of disturbing right when she sings, "Why did I do it?", and it her voice completely changes. I can't describe it, I want to say, "dark", but I don't think that's the right word for it...

I don't understand 3:14-3:32, when she begins to sing again, but then stops, several times. What's happening?

  • @Kari166 It's called acting. She's acting.

  • @VoleurGarcon, I KNOW. :P

  • Is that Hugh Jackman?

  • who cares who's the best 'Rose', theater is an ART; and all these women are exceptional. Different takes on every role is what's EXPECTED, rather than seeing each woman do a pale imitation of Ethel Merman.

  • @Stepneymiss There is still hope that the latest revival of "Gypsy"--with Patti LuPone may transfer to London. However, those chances are becoming slimmer and slimmer--especially with the recent news that Arthur Laurents is angry at Patti again.

  • She is amazing. Just amazing.

she really is an inspiration to performers everywhere... I mean she was horribly sick during this performance AND look at this performance!!! It's so heart-wrenching and she doesn't just act she literally becomes Rose!

(not to mention she's an inspiration and source of pride for Gingers everywhere!)

    :)

  • that's right audience...get off your feet and bow to greatness!

  • ugh I love Bernadette Peters. :) There isn't just one way to interpret a character. For example, Bernadette and Patti Lupone. Both of them interpreted Rose very differently. However, they were both fabulous. :)

  • When I watch this, it makes me wonder if Streisand can muster the energy needed for this role. Im sure she can, she works well with a point to prove, but im just finding it hard to envision, haha!

  • when she was almost crying i was almost crying i felt her anger and pain

  • Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury were the only actresses who did Rose without trying to do an impression of Merman.

  • omg hugh jackman with long hair...... omg i can't stop drooling i even forgot what i wanted here.... right i wanted to watch this song.. and wow he's sooo sexy D:

  • I love both Bernadette and LuPone but I think LuPone rocked Rose a little bit better than Bernadette. I think LuPone's voice was so filled with anger and emotion that she WAS Rose. Bernadette plays the character of Rose very well, but the difference was that LuPone WAS Rose.

  • @KeepItGayStageNazi Well, LuPone and Peters saw her entirely differently. That's very clear. I loved both performances; they were both mind blowing, and I'm not one of those "Gypsy" fans who's under the delusion that it was some competition between them. Peters gave a jaw-dropping, subtle but shattering performance. Her Rose was one I would truly call a monster. LuPone played her as bold and shameless, and her "Turn" was almost scary; so intense and powerful.

    They *both* really BECAME Rose.

  • Patti LuPone needs to crawl under a rock after watching this performance.

  • She's the best! Saw both her and LuPone and she is definitely better!

  • i love how starting 2:55 her moves get less sharp the more she sings and by the end she looks like a desperate mess. its AMAZING. shes my favorite mama rose

  • Patty Lupone rocked this role!!!

  • Shes actually my favorite recent mama rose...shes so different. 2:00 is such a broadway dame strut its ridiculous

  • her and patti lupone both own this roll in different ways.... both amazing.

  • Peters aside, How amazing does Hugh Jackman look here?

  • she performed this while being sick because thats what you do when you love what you do. you dont do it for anyone but youself. its a very deep love. i truly commend bernadette for going out there and showing the world what hard work and true love is. it takes a powerful woman

  • I Heard This On Glee

  • @tdkiinani haha me too :)

  • She was robbed.

  • This performance is the most moving I have ever seen on the Tony Awards. There is a whole life invested in this moment and to allow one's humanity to be seen so publicly is truly admirable and brave. Here, I feel it is as if she is singling to everyone who told her "No, you can't play this. No, you're no good in this." After a lifetime of work and playing it by the book, doesn't Bernadette get a dream for herself? Luckily, this wasn't only "for her" but for all of us, the audience, too.

  • @sinatrabooth89 Have you seen/heard any other samples of Bernadette's performance? She was very, very ill in this particular appearance...she barely had the energy to stand up, let alone do everything else that she did. Ms Peters is one of the best actresses in the business (Sondheim himself has said so)...she is far from flat - she's just nowhere near her best here.

  • @carr0760 I'm by no means saying that Peters isn't a good actress. And yes I have seen other clips from the 2003 revival with Peters, and actually I have been quite unimpressed with the production as a whole. And still she is above many other Rose's I have seen, just not as good as Merman, Lupone, and Landsbury.

  • @sinatrabooth89 Way too flat? Of all the possible criticisms for Bernadette's performance, I never thought that could be one. She was the only Rose who truly made you feel sorry for the monster, so to speak, she was close to terrifying in Everything's Coming Up Roses, seductive in her scenes with Herbie etc. She portrayed a million more emotions in one look than LuPone did in the whole show. Mrs. Styne herself said that she connected more to Peters' Rose than any of the others. So, yeah, flat?

  • @sinatrabooth89 Are you kidding me?!?! I saw her play Rose and let me tell you flat is the last thing possible to describe her. She was absolutely amazing, and there was more depth in her portrayal of Rose than any I know of. She made Rose more than just a character in a show; she made her real and you can see her connection to Rose in every fiber of her being.

  • .who's the guy announcing it?

anyhow- patti lupone was really good for this song<3

now i know what everything coming up roses comes from! ^-^

  • @Immerghensi Hugh Jackman.

  • who won the tony over her?

  • @violinrox24 marissa jaret winokur

  • she can act circles around every other Rose

    point blank

  • I was in the front row for this at the Tony's and the good will and adoration pouring out to her from the crowd, felt like the roof was going to be lifted, people were screaming and jumping up and down, it was that thrilling, to see her knock this out of the ballpark when everyone said she couldn't, it was a moment of pure unadulterated triumph. It may not have translated to the TV, but I can assure it it was magic.

  • @puppyfaces people said she couldnt? im slightly new to musical theater so im just wondering...was there some controversy over her getting this part?

  • @cherryblossom141 Early in the run, from previews through the first month or so, Peters was suffering from a viral infection, and missed, overall, around 30 performances. A lot of people thought she couldn't handle the role, since when she was going on during previews & early performances, she went on despite her illness. There's footage online of the 2nd preview, in which she's very ill. There were rumors over whether or not she'd be able to perform at the Tony's. No one knew till she went on.

  • @cherryblossom141 In fact, there were grumblings backstage, since producers were attempting to force her not to go on. Peters held strong and insisted on performing. She went on to receive one of the longest standing ovations in Tony Awards history. Her voice isn't anywhere near its best here (listen to her healthy...she's phenomenal), but she blew Radio City away. There were doctors waiting for her backstage, though, since apparently, when she reached the wings she could hardly walk.

  • @boynamedalexxx I soooooo wish I could have been there to see this live. The fact that she delivered such an amazing performance when she was ill and having such trouble is truly inspiring.

  • @boynamedalexxx, if her voice isn't at its greatest here, I would love to hear it at her best!~ :O

  • @boynamedalexxx was she sick??

  • @futuresuperstar4life haha, again, yes, she was very ill.

  • @cherryblossom141 Though widely respected in the Broadway world, it was thought that Ms. Peters was not the best casting for the part of Mama Rose, that she was too pretty and light for such a heavy part. It is a different way to go, and I adored Patti LuPone in the part, but each actress is going to bring something new and uniquely personal to the role. Just because Marlon Brando was a brilliant Stanley, does that mean no other actor has a right to take it on?

  • @puppyfaces Good lord, how on earth did you get front row tickets? Can we be best friends?? lol

  • @puppyfaces Bernie can do ANYTHING! I love her! She's incredible and hearing her voice live and right in front of you is a truly awesome and breathtaking experience! I saw her in the revival of Annie Get Your Gun right before it hit Broadway and her voice and her mere presence onstage gave my chills. Amazing woman! Incredible Actress! Phenomenal Singer!
