Every WHITE guy wanted to start a new rock band!! Dip shit!! Don't say anything unless you know what the hell you are talking about!! This goes to the commentator of the video!!! Proud and brown!!!
@SammyBee1957 "It SEEMED like every young white high school-aged male wanted to start a band." Taken out of context and not meant to be a racist remark. This was a local program about Chicago-area garage bands of the 60's, and the commentator, Bob Sirott, is correct.
Great Anthology of Chi Town 60.s music.I was living in Rockford through the sixties and got to see almost all of these bands because they played Rkfd. What a joy to grow up in the middle of all this exciting rock music evolution.WLSs & WCFL were king. What great memories !
Does anyone know who the two lead singers are? I know there were changes in band members throughout the years and it's hard to recognize some of their faces on the video.
@mzklover Which band are you referring to...The Buckinghams? (There were several featured here.) If you mean the tall blonde guy next to Dennis at about 2:50...I'm not sure?!
@bze2nlz1 The other lead singer besides Dennis was George LeGros, an original member of the band, sharing leads with Dennis. In the middle of the show's run, George was drafted into the Army and left the band. check out the band bio on the buckinghamsdotcom
@bze2nlz1 Happy to help. George was also part of the recording of "Sweets for my Sweet" that The Buckinghams recorded for the Spectra Sound label, prior to the USA Records sessions. Really like all your Bucks videos-thanks for posting.
Thanks for the update! Also, I just noticed that I inadvertently replied to Godzie1 instead of you after you replied to my first post! Can't believe I did that!
Back in the 60s I went to Batemen grammer school in Chicago on Richmond. Down the street on Sacremento was where one of the Buckinghams grew up. The girls would always stalk his house. But I didn't I was mad about Mark Lindsay then.
@Godzie1 My friends and I found phone numbers and one time we called a couple of these band guys. I'm sure we were very annoying. But, ahhhh, yes....Mark! I have HIM on my other channel (bze2nlz4).
Thanks for this video of your's, brings back so many memories of the Chicago I grew up with.
Also proves to my 16 year old daughter why her mother is so much in to music. I already told her that in Chicago in my era if you were not in to music & groups in that time? You were no where.
My older brother was in a group called the Midnight Children but was not one of those groups who made it out of Prosser's gym.
But did end up working as a DJ at a radio station in New Mexico.
@Godzie1 I saw those recent videos...of the Teen Idol Tour! I would have loved to see him again, but I don't think this show came to Chicago (?) The last time I saw him was in Dec., 2000. He performed his & some PR&R's hits in an obscure and short-lived play called 'Klub Kokomo', produced by Beach Boy Mike Love. It didn't do very well...but we got to meet Mark and his wife afterwards.
@bze2nlz1 You still live in Chicago? We moved in 93. (Changed didn't like it!)
Sorry you did not get to meet him. I only saw the video. I did see his concert at the auditorium theater in 1970 at the age of 12. He grew a beard. Ew!
@Godzie1 We live in the suburbs :) In the 70's I shared an apt. near downtown and then in Rogers Park with friends. It was fun...for a while, anyway. "It's a nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there (again)...." Wow, I would have given anything to see Mark back when he was a Raider! But then I saw him in '87, a couple times in the 90's, when I finally got to shake his hand **sigh** and got that autograph I'd wanted for so long :D
@bze2nlz1 Hold on to that autograph for your kids. It will be worth something one day. Wow you got to meet him? Fantastic. Well the suburbs were always pretty nice. One of my family's job transferred downstate. But my daughter goes to a great school here so I am waiting for her to graduate then I'm off to Vegas Baby! I'm not cut out for small town life? :P Hate it in fact but what can you expect from a city girl? lol I love Las Vegas!
Yes, I did mean The Buckinghams. Sorry about that! I had just gotten through watching a few of their videos prior to watching this one......Can you tell I'm a fan?! lol
@oldschoolhero66 Your channel proves that there were so many good bands like this all across the country! Chicago got more attention because of the those bands that had hits nationwide.
@rwells47 Thanks, Ron! I was fortunate to have been able to tape this show. Seeing most of these groups was how I spent many weekends during my 'younger years'!
@osgood54 The liner notes on a compilation cd I have say that 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' was originally a jazz instrumental performed by Cannonball Adderley in 1966. I don't know who wrote the lyrics added for the Buckingham's '67cover!
This is a really great documentary. Thank you so much for posting it. Great to hear the bands talking about the scene back then and to see some rare footage. Well done!
Thanks so much! I was lucky to see most of these groups in the late 60's--at a few Chicago area 'teen clubs.' And some still play at the local festivals--I've posted some vids from this past summer :)
I liked Mercy, Mercy by the Buckinghams over their other songs.

WIND started playing rock in 1959 along with the hit parade stuff. (No black artists though) I switched over to WLS in 1961 and WCFL in 1967.

the buckinghams had some great songs and were the best dressed band of the 60's in my opinion.
