This song transports, and Phillip Glass thought enough of it (and Low and "Heroes") to create symphonies around them. I believe this song, and the Low album is the best, BEST album of the 1970's. It covers so much ground brilliantly, and Subterraneans is a gorgeous example of just how.
i remember standing on the sidewalk when this song started playing on my ipod. it was rush hour at downtown so traffic was motionless and the sun started to set so it gave everything a goldish , yet aged look it seemed as if the world stood still for that 6 minutes. it may sound very minor to those of you reading this but that moment was almost magical.
The words that Bowie use in Subterraneans are NOT intended to make any sense.
He used them only for their fonetic effect.
In the "Sound and Vision" documentary about mr. B., you can catch a short frame in which you can clearly read some lyrics of Subterraneans: "care-line, care-line, care-line", NOT "caroline..."
David Robert Haywood Jones I'm only a thin white woman was thursday's child. But I know there's something in the wind. Let me fly away with you. Waiting so long, I've been waiting so long. Come to my waiting arms. Give me more than one caress, satisfy this hungriness. Share my life. Falling in love with me. How I wish you would. With your kiss my life begins.

David Bowie... is it any wonder that 'David' means 'beloved'?

Probably my favourite Bowie instrumental. It is so layered and complex, yet so emotional and touching. Incredible!

it's not instrumental, the lyrics are...

Care-line
Care-line
Care-line
Care-line driving me
Shirley, Shirley, Shirley own
Share bride failing star

Those are "lyrics". They make no sense. It is an instrumental even

I think the lyrics are
SHARE BRIGHT FAILING STAR (pain as bright as an exploded star. Mr. B wants to tell a pal about a breakup with a lady)
CAROLINE, CAROLINE, CAROLINE, CAROLINE (The woman he loves)
RIDING THERE, (riding the bus or tube)
SURELY, SURELY, SURELY ON, (slowly, steadily, moving on with her life and out of Our Hero's life)
SHARE BRIGHT FAILING STAR
So, the lyrics DO make sense. It's a song about a broken heart/relationship parting/romantic sorrow

Care-line, care-line, care-line, care-line

The voice is human, but it doesn't sound quite human. It sounds like an ANGEL'S voice. Bowie is a beautiful gentleman with a beautiful voice!

That song certainly gives me the chills. It's so haunting yet so beautiful. David Bowie is a legend.
