Nice tut geezer! ;) I have a problem though, and that is I have specular shine on the transparent area revealing my cheat, I could use a Lambert (whatever 1 of those is) but I want specular shine on the visible area :( n e help would be greatly appreciated! cheerz

@nusphere Hopefully you figured out what to do by now, but in case you haven't: Under the phong attributes you will see an area of options labelled "specular shading". In those options you will notice specular color. In layman's terms this is the color of the light reflected off the surface. If you want your surface to look matte, use black for the specular color :)
Hey man.. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what "misconception" you cleared up here. Everything you said is pretty much true except this: It's not necessary for your background to be transparent when creating the trans. map in photoshop. White will work as well (and it enables you to utilize a reverse node when tweaking specularity and other stuff). This video covers pretty elementary stuff man. :(
Hi, first I used a PSD File for trasnparent texture, but I had issues with it. There were strange white borders around the visible parts. It works better with PNG files.
love your maya videos! Are you running maya on snow lep? i got maya 2010 and it said only good on 10.5.8 so i downgraded. what are you running for an os? thanks and keep the maya videos coming. jeff

@staticenz
If you leave the background white, what's the next step to make the white become transparent?
If you have any tutorials that cover this, send me the link. Thanks! =)
