THIS is funny!!!! People riding by on bicycles while guards change duty!! Can someone answer me why are their guards?? France is a republic; NOT A MONARCHY!! The United States of America is a much older republic and we have no ceremonial guards parading in front of the White House!! Are the French envious of the more ancient British Monarchy and its Royal Guards?

@fairgirl7 In England it's the ROYAL guard but in France it's the REPUBLICAN guard. It's a tradition in many republic countries. I thinks not in the us because of it's a quite recent country.

@fairgirl7 I repeat it's a REPUBLICAN guard like others countries in Europe. So it's not a question of "real queen" because the french guard is REPUBLICAN. France don't want to steal the british tradition and heritage because it's also a part of the french heritage since the XIIIrd century : It was a royal guard after a imperial guard and after a republican guard in 1848 (and not in 1958).

Bonjour, en fait, comme le dit fredo357 elle s'est toujours faite de cette manière. Elle fut annulée en 2001 lorsque le plan Vigipirate a été déployé en France. L'arrivée des élections présidentielles en mai 2007 a réactivé ce que l'on appelle la petite relève : ce sont les 2 gardes républicains devant le Palais de l'Elysée. Il y a aussi la grande relève mais qui n'est pas d'actualité.
