It exists a better german picture about " Operation Valkyrie " with absolute wonderful german actors, made a few years before this Hollywood-Nonsens. The real story of the german army resistance was much more thrilling then Hollywood every could imagine.

It's a good movie and the true story it is based is quite amazing--but Cruise is distracting. A little slow in the beginning but intense in the second half. Overall, the film would have been much much better had another actor played Colonel Stauffenberg.
Accent isn't a factor. The rest of the cast speak english, but they're entirely believable. it's still an excellent movie, not withstanding cruise.

I saw this movie because I love and respect Bryan Singer - talented director. "Valkyrie" was ok but I didn't feel the atmosphere of that period in our history. "Enemy at the Gates" (2001) and "Black Book" (2006) were much better films. I actually enjoyed Tom Cruise's performance but he did not take the lead as strongly as he should have. His non-German accent was not an issue it was the strength that he displayed in his performance that was disappointing to many. The supporting cast was superb

the only thing i did not like about the movie was if you know anything about history ans especial if you had known anything about the setting you would know that they fail to kill Hitler so that kills the guessing factor of the movie

I was ready to hate the movie for so many reasons, hwoever once I saw it I loved it. Yes Cruise was a bit distracting but that is okay though. If you can afford to get off the high horse the movie is good.
All i can say is I really liked this very good movie a lot, and this lady critic does not know what she is talking about. Everyone I know who saw this movie thought it was excellent. Its amazing that she actualy gets in front of a camera and says all this negative stuff about a war movie that clearly was not a dud. I had no problem with TomC in the lead role. The real life characters spoke German, I don't expect all movies about Germany or WWII to have the German characters speak Deutsch.

I approached this movie expecting the worst, yes it doesn't have the "Realism" of Downfall, i.e. spoken in German, but if you can get past that it does justice to its subject matter and tells a story that deserves to be more widely known.
Tom Cruise is not as bad as she claims; he played the part very well, he even looked a bit like whom he was portraying, but the major flaw with the film is the language. It should have been in German with subtitles, but many people in the cast do not speak German fluently enough to use the type of technical language necessary.
Good movie, Cruise did a good job and the cast is kick ass, language prob is handled the same as Hunt 4 Red Oct. I think it was just popular to be down on Tom Cruise.

I went thinking "Dear god, Tom Crusise as a German soldier. What the hell?!" and i think I was right. All the other British Accents drove me nuts, and the ONE guy that had an actual GERMAN accent(Thomas Kretschmann), had the smallest part in the entire movie. Thomas was going to be Stauffenberg before Bryan Singer took over. Way to go Singer. Thomas Kretschmann for life!
I was also distracted by Tom Cruise during the movie. He didn't fit the role. He is too modern. He's a Hollywood guy, for Pete's sake. And almost no one had the right accents!!!! What the heck?

Unlike other WWII films like Patton or The Eagle Has Landed, the characters in Valkyrie are not well acted. There is no suspence. Even if you don't know the history, there is no doubt of the outcome from the begining.

Even though the story has been told in many different formats before, this is probably the best of them.
Cruise does not stand out in every scene as she suggests, you have to remember Stauffenberg, responsible for the actual deed would have a certain authoratative air about him, Tom was an ideal choice for the lead role. In my opinion over-shadowed by the excellent supporting cast, Bill Nighy shining over most others.

first of all, this was based on a true story. Hitler was everything the Bible was not. his whole premise was to get rid of the Jews because he felt they were tainting the very existance of the Germans. And Hitler was guilty and proved it when he lost the war, then killed himself. Second, as far as Tom's performance, sure he did not have a German accent but I think he played the part pretty damn well. Look past his stupidity and you will see that.

Judging from the botched up description of this movie and the actual events it portrays, I have to assuredly say that either Lemir didn't watch the movie, or didn't pay a lick of attention throughout.
I only agree partly with the reviewer chick. Yes, Cruise's fame did overshadow the movie a bit, but out of all the cast members, he was the best choice for the Stauffenberg role, because he looked the most like the real Stauffenberg.
Regarding Cruise's American accent being distracting, the only way they could have given the movie an authentic feel is to have used only German speaking actors, and did the movie in German with subtitles, or English with heavy German accents.
They used MANY famous (and talented)) German actors used in the film, many in major roles; and the Goebbels and Hitler scenes are probably the most menacing things you'll have ever seen in the genre!
Possibly another reason I loved Cruise in this role is that to me Stauffenberg was probably a fairly unsure of himself type person. Just from what I've read about him. I could be wrong but that's how I thought of him. Forgetting one of the explosives reinforced that view.
The choice of Cruise to play someone like that is masterful, because he's a genius at appearing to be the innocent, bumbling conniver, a la Risky Business (1983). He shone in that film, which incidentally made his career.

I was ready to hate the movie for so many reasons, hwoever once I saw it I loved it. Yes Cruise was a bit distracting but that is okay though. If you can afford to get off the high horse the movie is good.

All i can say is I really liked this very good movie a lot, and this lady critic does not know what she is talking about. Everyone I know who saw this movie thought it was excellent. Its amazing that she actualy gets in front of a camera and says all this negative stuff about a war movie that clearly was not a dud. I had no problem with TomC in the lead role. The real life characters spoke German, I don't expect all movies about Germany or WWII to have the German characters speak Deutsch.

I approached this movie expecting the worst, yes it doesn't have the "Realism" of Downfall, i.e. spoken in German, but if you can get past that it does justice to its subject matter and tells a story that deserves to be more widely known.

Tom Cruise is not as bad as she claims; he played the part very well, he even looked a bit like whom he was portraying, but the major flaw with the film is the language. It should have been in German with subtitles, but many people in the cast do not speak German fluently enough to use the type of technical language necessary.

Acting was decent but the movie was a bit slow at times. The movie seemed a little too . . . simple. Not sure what could have been done to spice it up but it was still entertaining. Very simple plot

I went thinking "Dear god, Tom Crusise as a German soldier. What the hell?!" and i think I was right. All the other British Accents drove me nuts, and the ONE guy that had an actual GERMAN accent(Thomas Kretschmann), had the smallest part in the entire movie. Thomas was going to be Stauffenberg before Bryan Singer took over. Way to go Singer. Thomas Kretschmann for life!

Unlike other WWII films like Patton or The Eagle Has Landed, the characters in Valkyrie are not well acted. There is no suspence. Even if you don't know the history, there is no doubt of the outcome from the begining.

Even though the story has been told in many different formats before, this is probably the best of them.
Cruise does not stand out in every scene as she suggests, you have to remember Stauffenberg, responsible for the actual deed would have a certain authoratative air about him, Tom was an ideal choice for the lead role. In my opinion over-shadowed by the excellent supporting cast, Bill Nighy shining over most others.
A well paced movie which keeps us in suspense until the credits roll.

well put. the language was intelligently done phasing from german to english at the beginning. Anyone with half a brain cell knows that in real life they would have all spoken German. By having the script in english it makes it more realistic not less, because now it is 'our' language just as it would have been if you were one of the characters living it. It doesn't matter one flying fuck whether Tom speaks with an american accent , english or Chinese. Niether is any more wrong or right.

first of all, this was based on a true story. Hitler was everything the Bible was not. his whole premise was to get rid of the Jews because he felt they were tainting the very existance of the Germans. And Hitler was guilty and proved it when he lost the war, then killed himself. Second, as far as Tom's performance, sure he did not have a German accent but I think he played the part pretty damn well. Look past his stupidity and you will see that.

I only agree partly with the reviewer chick. Yes, Cruise's fame did overshadow the movie a bit, but out of all the cast members, he was the best choice for the Stauffenberg role, because he looked the most like the real Stauffenberg.
Regarding Cruise's American accent being distracting, the only way they could have given the movie an authentic feel is to have used only German speaking actors, and did the movie in German with subtitles, or English with heavy German accents.

Possibly another reason I loved Cruise in this role is that to me Stauffenberg was probably a fairly unsure of himself type person. Just from what I've read about him. I could be wrong but that's how I thought of him. Forgetting one of the explosives reinforced that view.
The choice of Cruise to play someone like that is masterful, because he's a genius at appearing to be the innocent, bumbling conniver, a la Risky Business (1983). He shone in that film, which incidentally made his career.

Cruise brought years of acting prowess to the role. I thought he did a great job. I barely registered his celebrity once I saw that he was seriously engaging with this film. The UK was also the only nation to remain defiant in the face of a Nazi takeover of all of Europe by 1940 - at a time when even its steadfast ally the US had refused to commit its own troops to a European war.
